Brisbane Lions Vs Gold Coast Suns – Round 22, 2018

A tale of woe. A tale of hope.

Last time we played

Lions 10.11.71 Suns 11.10.76

Oh so disappointing. We never really fired this game and in retrospect we really should have won it. The Suns took the lead in the 1st Quarter and we never really were able to bring it back. The final quarter saw us pull it back to a goal half way through but just couldn’t put it through the big sticks. We had them on most stats except contested possessions but the one that counted was 82 turnovers to 74. Not the one you want to win. It was a woeful game and not our worst for the year but far from our best.

Considering the Suns’ 11 game losing streak started the round after they beat us it makes this result stick in the craw even more.

Fun fact: Did you realise former Lions Chairman Graham Downie was part of the committee that established their administration? It explains so much.

How are the two teams travelling?

Gold Coast Suns

LWLLL

The Suns’ out of the blue victory over the Swans is starting to recede into the distance and they are coming off a loss to Carlton at Metricon and two 75+ losses to Melbourne and Richmond. The Suns’ percentage is a woeful 60.9 just .3 above the slightly more woeful Blues.

They’ve also has a horrible time in the media with scrutiny of the Club over the Tom Lynch announcement and Mark Evans challenged the player managers to a game of legal Roshambo played South Park style over managers intstructing draftees to so they wont go to the Suns. They also still have Tony Cochrane sounding like a drunk uncle at a wedding. Apparently Andrew Swallow is open to staying, so that’s nice for them.

Brisbane Lions

WLLLL

It’s been 4 games since our great little 3 game win streak.
giphy.gif

2 of those 4 losses have been in the “best 16th, we love the Lions” category both played at home (Crows, North) and 2 in the “Oh there plucky, but still young category” Pies (good for a quarter and a half) and Geelong and GBH Stadium where we were good for a half but then Tom Hawkins and Dangerwoodlett got a hold of us.

We have been in a whole lot of games this year and so many key indicators have improved but the near losses are telling. If we just looked at percentage we’d be 13th, points for we’d be 11th and points against we’d be 14th. Our young team is improving and in Fages we trust.

Losing Darcy Gardiner for the season is a blow but at least against the Suns absent forward line he will not be missed as much as he will be the following week against the Weagles. I’m not sure who comes in for him and in an undermanned Suns forward line we may see a ball mover type like Allison get a shot.

It’s a big game for

Dane Zorko and Stephen May

This game needs to be a captain’s game but for completely different reasons. Zork’s has been kept quiet several times this year, most recently last week against the Magpies. He is still working on how to impact the game and to be fair many of us probably don’t see the defensive efforts and organisational work he does but two things need to happen for him if he does get a tag from the Suns; Zork’s needs to reign in his temper that was starting to boil over against Levi Greenwood last week and; the young midfield brigade of Berry, McLuggage, Mathieson and Rayner when he runs through need to pick up the effort to support him and Beams.

Stephen May on the other hand is the new focus of media attention at the Suns. The remaining co-captain can’t help but think that there may be a target on his back and if Hammo’s theory is to be believed (source Northern Exposure Podcast) then the Suns may be looking to move him on or demand he prove his loyalty. Regardless the Suns best defender will need to make an impact in his last two games this year to either stamp his authority on the team he intends to lead into the future or build his trader value. The kind of game he plays (selfless or selfish) might tell us something of his intended future.

This is how I hope it plays out on Saturday for May (because we all love him)

Who wins

I can’t see the Suns winning this. They are a chance (there is always a chance)
giphy.gif

but they will struggle against a stronger, hungrier and more organised Brisbane outfit with a desire to win. If percentage and season stats are to be regarded we are well advanced on the Suns and in their current, demoralised and injury ravaged state they just can’t kick enough goals to get past our more potent (although still developing) forward setup. Our defence is much better than their forwards and our defence should make easy work of their ramshackle forward setup.

Predictions:

Rayner, McStay and Hipwood to get 3 each. Binga best on ground. Andrews to take a record intercept marks. Stephen May best on ground for the Suns.

What I would love: Lions by 80+

What I think will happen: Lions by 20.

That's what we needed! Moar Star Wars memes!

Nice preview Davemonkey...

*David Swallow
Ahem yes. I shall leave my confusion on display so as not to wreck the pick up. Of course David Swallow. Unsurprisingly brother Andrew living a fine life in Queensland likely has a lot to do with him staying up here.

There's another easter egg he's left in there too. :D
Hey! I pride myself on my research. Of appropriate Star Wars gifs. Footy? That's a bit hit and miss.

"Something something something darkside, something something something complete." :D

Well, saturday night is another sporting extravaganza for me - Lions, Wallabies and Everton :) Would like to see all three win, will settle for 2 out of 3, so long as the obvious loss is the only one that happens.

This is a game we should win and win well, but footy's a funny game....but I'm in the "Lions by 60+" camp this week. Part of our development has to be to put struggling sides to the sword.

Entertaining preview.

It's Steven May not Stephen. Hoping for May actually play forward together with Crossley and Thompson with Leslie back. May was great forward against Carlton in the last quarter.

Suns have 14 players done for season and 4 tests for this game. Lions should win easily. Good luck.

I was more thinking too few Ys.
I picked up on the wrong name. I was going to leave him alone on the spelling mistakes... Really don't want to overshadow a big week for "Dane" Zorko and "Stephen" May.

Lol. I had more comment in there so that you could correct it and then I could remove all evidence of pointing it out. Of course, now it's too late and we're all just picking on you, so too bad!

I'm absolutely against tanking, deliberately loosing, even looking like your trying to loose.

However I'm about development and giving supporters hope. The pre-season is great to have a look at the new recruits but I think when its late in the season and your not playing finals then its a chance to say goodbye to some oar see if those that haven yet played at the top level to give them a run and let the supporters a chance to see what's waiting. I don't think we should have a lot of changes but Darcy is out and our forward line is too tall to add enough pressure. Clay Beams can have the last game at home but this Suns game I'm for Ballenden to come in, the Big O and McStay we know what we are going to get with them so they can both have a rest. Zac Bailey can play as a small forward so overall balance we are a bit shorter in the forwards. So to replace Dacry it's Lyons or Mayes, absolutely selfish I'm for Mayer to increase his trade vale or save his career. Thats about it until we play the Eagles.

Like most weeks it comes down to the 2 Daynes. If Zorko is tagged out of it and Beams is ineffective with the footy or even worse like last week then it'll be a close game even if the younger mids stand up.

i'm not so good with tactics or strategy and am happy to leave that to those who know better, but stability seems always a good thing when possible so I would just like to see Bailey return for another game, replacing Gardener, and a bit of a shuffle around to accommodate this.

I won't be around on sat night due to a family wedding. Us Lion and Saints fans will be checking scores frequently! Both teams playing sat night.

Hoping to be pleasantly surprised!

Go Lions:hearts::brisbane:

The loss against the Suns earlier this year still irks me and if we lose again I doubt I'll get much comfort from having an earlier draft pick.

We should win, and win well.

Fun fact: since round 9 Gold Coast have averaged 52 points a game. Over the same period we average 91 points a game.

Gold Coast have only twice kicked 12 goals and in one of those games Lynch kicked 8. The other time was the win against Sydney

If we can kick 12 goals we should win.

Yep we are absolutely cooked and barely limping to finish line. Playing kids who aren't ready due to another year of a ridiculously long injury list.
Lions easily
