G'day all, been watching the GF replay quite alot (surprise surprise). At work (bored) atm so forgive me if my recollection is a bit off (plus the memory aint what it used to be).
But anyway, here is my (current) top 5 moments from the granny. Interested to hear what other ones come to mind?
1. Hawks first goal. Superb running goal from Changa. Collected it just forward of half back, great gather from Browny and the quick give back to a hard running Bateman who shrugs one tackle and finishes from just on the 50. Settled us down early and got the blood pumping.
2. Fierce attack. Almost my favorite moment of the game. Think it is about with 19minutes left of the second quarter to play and about 40m out from Hawks goal with the ball under heated dispute. Mitch starts it with a flying elbow that just misses a cats defender. Follow up comes from a few Hawks including Renouf and Bateman who all throw their bodies into cats with a series of hip and shoulders, holding the ball up in the Hawks forward line. The passage ends with a ball up after Crawf is slung backwards with what should have been a free kick. Made me believe that the Hawks would do anything to win this one from the Captain to the youngest member of the team.
3. Cyril's scramble. Famous moment and a turning point of the third when the game was very much in dispute. Three on one against and Rioli scraps a win and a holding the ball free kick from Rooke through shear determination and agility. Brought the crowd to its feet. A signal that the Hawks had weatheared the storm of the second and early third onslaught from the Cats and that they still thought they could win it.
4. Dew's cameo. Ok im cheating here, because this was really five sublime moments of the third quarter all within the space of about 20 minutes. Make no mistake this cameo won us the GF such was this man's impact in the third, when things were really on the line, and Dew's ability to execute turned five half opportunities into five Hawthorn goals. The first was his toe poke in traffic to himself then long bomb from one step off the outside of his foot to Buddy on his own, who passed it to Willow for a goal early in the third. The second was his contested one on one mark and long bomb to Buddy in the goal square who flicked it down to Junior Boy for a perfect roving goal. The third was following the chase down after Taylor miscued a bounce out of defence, one step from 50m and Dew splits the middle with a goal that not many others could have kicked. The fourth is so brilliant it gets it own "magic moment" number 5 below. The fifth was the Buddy rag doll throwdown of Scarlett and handpass to Dew who curls one back from 45 on his left for yet another goal from a half chance.
5. Willow and Dewie tag team. Which brings me to the 5th magic moment, and possibly my favorite because it was freakin hilarious but also the one passage of play that summed up the difference between the two teams on the day. The fact that it involved Williams and Dew, not exactly noted tacklers or scramblers, probably makes it even funnier. Im talking of course of the two on three scenario deep in the Hawks forward pocket late in the third quarter between Dew, Willow and three Geelong defenders. Its fantastic to watch as the three defenders run from one Hawk to the other, tackling them and bringing them to the ground, as Willow and Dew flick the ball back and forth between each other with over the head handballs as they are dragged to ground. Finally all three defenders collapse around Dew who flicks one final handball into an exhausted Willows path who runs onto it cleanly and slots a goal. Cant watch this replay enough, my nomination for tag team goal of the year.
Enjoy!
