how can you compare a CHF to a wing???
you cant

here are their playing honors:

Matera - 2nd brownlow 94, 3rd brownlow 97, BnF 97, 3rd BnF 91, Norm Smith medal 92, All Australian 91,93,94,96,97, Dual Premiership player, 123 total brownlow votes

Grant - BnF 94, 96, 2nd BnF 97,98,99, 3rd browlow medal 96, All Australian 97,98,99, leading goalkicker 90,94, 104 total brownlow votes

id have to say Matera has more honors and was a top line player for longer than chris grant has been....but you cant compare

Hard to compare as they are different players but,

Matera is simply one of the best players I have seen. Grant isn't.

Maybe a better comparison would have been:

Matera v Jarman v Daicos

I would find it hard to split those three players.

I only did it to settle an argument with Jod23.
The fact is Grant hasn't been All Australian as much as he has been up against the best player in 20 years in Wayne Carey for the position.

Grant is also 3 years younger, yet has played more games

He is also still a star, not a washed up hack who hasn't done crap recently and is afraid of getting hurt. Grant is also a better leader and doesn't spend half of each match whinging

errr...you forgetting that Grant WON the Brownlow in '97, only for Ian Collins the fat prick.

Macca, the historical attribute of players, in my opinion, do sweet FA to describing a player's worth.

Robbie Flower only ever played in a couple of finals and never won a Brownlow. Is he a lesser player than the worst player in the Hawks 1980-1989 side who won three flags???

Chris Grant plays a role far superior to Matera. But again, comparing apples to bananas...sorry Apple King!

Oh, and the above theory also applies to our Captain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Pies (Port Adelaide included :))!

Grant has carried the forward line at the dogs since he was 17 and has done it brilliantly. Not only does he have tremendous skills and kick inspirational goals but his second efforts are unmatched throughout the league. He is a leader in goal assists at the club if my memory serves me correctly.Has basically got valid claims to two brownlows and has the best passing skills I have ever seen especially for a man of his bulk.Matera was a brilliant player but you simply cannot compare them they are two entirely different players who both peaked at different times in there carreer and for godsakes someone make Peter Matera retire he is ruining what has been a brilliant and fulfilling carreer.

you said it....grant is 3 years younger....lets see how Grant goes in three years time and if he ends up as a "washed up hack" like you call matera. 3 years ago (when matera would of been grants current age) matera was still one of the best midfielders in the league.

There has also been a crapload of fantastic midfielders in the last 10 years - Matera being right up there with the best of them.

i understand your point - and i wouldnt say matera is better just cos he has 2 flags and a norm smith. I think he is a better player. Matera was one of the top 4 players at a club that dominated the last decade, and has 5 all australians to show for it. Grant was just about the only good player for hte bulldogs up til the mid 90s when they started to come good with the likes of west, johnson, smith etc.

even without the achievements...id much rather have matera than grant in my side

In 3 years time Grant will be playin either chb or full forward and be allowed to settle there because he will finally have some support down there.I think you will find once Grant gets some support he will flourish a bit towards the end of his carreer and then taper off.;)

Doubt that Port offered a Million dollar + contract to Matera at the end of 96.... wonder who they regarded as the more valuable player, and who they perceived to be a more fitting inaugrial captain of the Port Power at the time?

Matera has been much better than Grant overall.
2 Premierships and a norm smith

Do you rate Glenn Archer better than Chris Grant??

I'm a Roos supporter and I certainly don't

Is Doug Hawkins no good cos he never played in a premiership??

I suppose Bob Skilton was **** house then seeing he only played in one final

Trevor Barker too

the list goes on and on.. is Shane Ellen better than Chris Grant cos he played a in a flag??

yup - and im bloody glad chris grant decided to stay at footscray as well!

At his prime around 1994, Matera would have been worth more than Chris Grant is.
Sorry but that's my opinion.
I have yet to see Grant win a final single handedly like Matera has done on many occassions
As for Archer well

I don't rate him at all

Just kidding Arch has been a great stalwart of the Roos

now you are being completely silly. You know this is a nonsense. Any Port fan would have loved to have had Grant in their starting line up. Let's not get too senseless in this discussion.
