Redgum: and the band played Waltzing Matilda

I was in Italy on Anzac day and we stopped at the Monte Cassino war cemetery, this song was put on the CD.

I defy anyone to keep a dry eye.

Then in 1915 the country said son
no time for rovin' there's work to be done
and they gave me a tin hat and gave me a gun
and they sent me away to the war.............

year by year those men disappear
soon no one will march at all.................

Funny thing is Anzac day gets bigger every year.

Not Redgum.

Eric Bogle, although every country/bush/folk band in the country worth their salt would have performed it at some stage.

Probably not the Greatest, but The Easybeats' Friday on my mind should have some cred. (they were Aus, yeah?)

Also Shivers - Boys next door (Nick Cave).

When I was a young man I carried a swag and I lived the free life of a rover.
From the Murrys green banks to the dusty out back I waltz'n Matilda all Over.

What about ''I've been to bali too'' by redgum. Or my Sig.

Or Barbados by the Models!

Well, Slim Dusty would have heaps, Lights On The Hill is one that comes to mind, Pub With No Beer, Duncan, etc.

John Williamson has a song called 'True Blue' which is pretty good. 'Boogie With m'Baby' would also have to be up there! 'A Flag Of Our Own' is probably a bit divisive.

But Peter Allen's 'Still Call Australia Home' surely must also be right up there. That I am, you are thingy is also fairly catchy. Sounds of Then, Downunder, obviously Waltzing Matilda! Band Played Waltzing Matilda yep, Road To Gundagai is a corker. Great Southern Land by Icehouse (most of these have already been mentioned).

Others that take my fancy include Angels' 'Let The Night Roll On', Russell thingemebob's "The Real Thing", "Run To Paradise", a lot of Barnesy and Chisel stuff, the list goes on.

I wanna make you my Lady by Mark Holden and Don't fall in love by The Ferretts:D

Seriously, why do people think Khe Sahn by Cold Chisel is such a great 'aussie' song. No Australian troops were ever stationed at Khe Sahn during the Vietnam War. Mind you in all fairness to Don Walker Nui Dat doesn't have the same ring to it.

I reckon Like-Wow is a bit more grouse.

Now, if it hadn't been done to death on TV over the last few years, Counting The Beat might have made this list.

SO ... how about H&C "The Slab" or "Say Goodbye"?

How about 'Redback on the toilet seat'?
