Bit top heavy on the bench!
Justin Crawford?

I remember him for public urination more than anything he did onfield.

Not a bad list. Not sure if Jonatahan Robran deserves to be there, though. He really wasn't great. Simon Minton-Connell could possibly be squeezed in at #40; he was serviceable for the one or two seasons he played. At very least I remember he kicked 8 goals one game.

Danny Jacobs or Simon Beaumont get a look-in? (They both played for us, right??)

A lot on here wouldn't have seen Russell play. He was a favourite of mine, and a great Hawk, since he just lobbed, unexpected, on our doorstep. Would be right up there with the best.
that's the point exactly. we can only comment on who we saw or what we know. I wish I knew a lot of the older greats

Ian Bremner from Collingwood...played 71 and 76 grand finals ...sure he could have played centre.

Actually, Brem would fit easily into today's game. He kicked the ball backwards, about 30 metres, in a game. He was "setting up" long before his time, or maybe it was a brain fade.

Problem with that Misty, is that us oldies won't see as many of the future greats, so you have more to look forward to than I do.;):rainbow:

It's such a tough question...Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake.

- Without Burgoyne we wouldn't have kicked the curse. This was the turning point in our fortunes.
- Without Lake we probably wouldn't have gone B2B2B. That big-bodied solid-mitts dude will be missed.
- Without Gibbo, I don't think Lake would have been as good. Gibbo is a real general down back.

Conclusion...all three.

Winning the B&F in a premiership year is the mark of a truely great player.
Gibbo did it twice!!

Gibbo is the best mature age recruit. NO CONTEST
To those who say we wouldn't have won the premiership with out Lake or Burgers I say we wouldn't have won without Gibbo.
hands down the most consistent too.

Wonderful achievement in any context.

It's a bit like asking who is your favorite child but I do think this post has much clarity and perspective.

Does Gunston count or was he too young when we got him? He will be up there by end of his career

I am surprised that you are only the second person, I think, who has mentioned Jack Gunston. He is 24, has plaed 100+ games, kicked 220 goals, and has 3 premiership medallions, and is line to add to that. He could easily become our best ever mature age recruits. I bet he's feeling good that he didn't go to the jabbers.

Danny Jacobs - Just misses out due to the sole fact that when he kicked his first goal for us and all the players got around him I still can't get his arrogant smirk out of my head as if to say 'wtf am I doing here at this shit club!?" An arrogant smirk George Bailey would have been proud of.

Simon Beaumont - A fly could have chinned Justin Murphy harder than he did during the line in the sand game. Drops a few spots on that 'effort' alone.

Thats why I said "Burgoyne is a freak and a legend but i reckon we still would have snagged a couple of flags without him" (i.e 2014 and 2015). Bear in mind also that Lake was Norm Smith medallist in the 2013 grand final. Do we win the 2013 grand final without him? I have my doubts. Lake for me by some margin.

I think the 2013 prelim was the biggest game we've won. Had we lost that I don't know if we would have won a flag at all to be honest. Would have been 2012 and 2013 heartbreak and the coaching staff may have made changes then.

Burgoyne is thus the best. IMO.

Lake, Gunston, and Gibson all superb. We have had an amazing time recruiting from other clubs.

I guess the question is whether or not Gunston was mature-aged...

Drafted 2 years before we got him, its borderline based on his age but he'd played senior footy so I would class him as a mature aged recruit

Gordon Fode (St.K), Paul Sharkey (Coll) and Justin Crawford (Syd) must be wondering what they did wrong to miss out on that team.

And captained Vic once as well.
Way too little love for him here.

I met him when I was young in his B&F year (1984). I got his autograph...I think he thought I was a girl. (I did look a bit feminine back then.) It didn't help that the only pen we had available was a pink one!
