Freakin' bloody Samsung refrigerators!

I could complain about the ice maker - if you have a Samsung fridge that's more than a couple of years old then you already know about this (or you will find out - believe me). The "other" design problem has reared its' ugly head again. The overflow of auto defrost water.

The cause might be due to higher than normal humidity (possibly exacerbated by use of an evaporative cooler) but whatever, it occurs when the drainage drip tube blocks up due to ice crystals forming and subsequent auto defrost water wells up with no way to drain down into the evaporation pan). This goes unnoticed for a while as it pools below the freezer drawers but soon enough, water will drip onto the floor and then the job of resolving the impact begins.

I was shown this by a Samsung tech.

Turn the fridge off to commence the activity.

Remove the freezer contents and store them (somehow). Lucky we have a beer fridge. It's chockers now.

Remove the rear panel from the freezer - carefully as it has wires for temperature sensors and a fan (model dependant).

Carefully use a blower such as a fan or a hair dryer on cool (not hot) to assist the thaw of ice that might have built up on the refrigeration coils. These might be fragile so do not chip away at the ice - just let it melt).

When that's done, seek out the drain tube and blow the cool air into and around it. This must be cleared. But he aware that at the place where the drains emerge in the back of the fridge there are short rubber tubes with very narrow openings (to prevent insects climbing up into the fridge). These can remain blocked or they can easily dislodge. Check these when the job is complete to ensure that they are clean and attached.

If you have a Samsung fridge that's still in the warranty period check for ice or water beneath the freezer drawers and under the veggie keeper drawers. Samsung are notorious for denying any faults. Also remove the ice maker and check for ice building up inside. Do not force it though as it might already be frozen up. There was a class action lawsuit in the USA which forced redesign and compensation but in Australia there was no compensation to owners of these fridges so we're knackered until the thing is replaced.

Fairly sure I read a while back that Samsung white goods are similar quality to Hisense (shite).

Better than Hisense (the freezer we bought at the same time using some kind of store "bonus" died some time back - the repair guy said that they are unfixable in most cases).

The Samsung fridge was one of those $3k plus french door models. It's been repaired by Samsung previously. About 7 years old now.

Ice is almost gone now...


Next will be Mitsubishi or Hitachi.

Obviously, I've come up with a modification to perhaps reduce the likelihood of a future reoccurrence.

Basically just doubling up on the factory design, I've crafted a piece of metal that hangs over the heating element which dips into the drip tray to melt any freeze.

Maybe it'll work.

I have a double brick veneer home with an evap system which works and cools the home just fine. I never turn on the splitty, was a complete waste of money.. but some rude selfish campaigner has ****ed it for everyone

well worth a try, i just today started to replace the propriety controller with a generic stc-1000 on the wifes wine fridge that she uses for cheese. bloody things are exxy and the parts are dear as well even on aliexpress,

The generic stc-1000 cost 20 bucks and does the same thing, i are waiting on a little 12v power supply to run the fans and the internal LED light though as they are 12v.

Meanwhile our Kleenmaid Speed Queen washer with a mechanical sequencer just keeps going.... theres a reason they are in most coin landries and caravan park common laundries.

Haier. Wow. Fair enough. I'm guessing that almost every brand is going to be Chinese owned before long so it's almost a non-issue with this kind of thing.

We had a Simpson washing machine. Bought it in the 1990s and even then, we knew it was a cheapened down version of the previous Simpson that we'd owned. There was a recall on it soon after and a tech came to our place to fix something in the machine - I wasn't there to see what he did. My wife's mother had the same machine.

Soon after, ours began to play up - the power button became flakey and my wife put tape over it so it wouldn't accidentally be switched off (she used the GPO switch instead). The in-law's machine failed in the same way.

When I saw the tape I took the top panel off and saw that the switch was actually OK, but the plastic mount had broken so it kind of "floated" and the button on the panel could barely reach the actual switch. One zip-clip fixed that. Same of the in-law's and both machines ran for years. Eventually theirs failed and my wife didn't want me to fix it (mother in law just wanted a newer model). So did my wife so we sold ours on Market Place. As I moved it out of the laundry the broken piece fell out so I did the needful and glued it back into it's original spot (with the zip clip still there as the second line of defense).

My bush mechanic hack was just to bend a bit of steel and hang it over the heater element so that the end of it sits above the hole that ices over. There was already a similar heat transfer attachment so I just doubled what the factory design had come up with. It's a massive fridge but it doesn't hold enough stuff - the shelves aren't great and the ice maker takes up space.

Technically, the ice maker design is flawed and if I had my way when we were buying the fridge, we'd have bought the Mitsubishi without an ice maker, but I was outvoted in a landslide.

in reality GM and ford to a lesser extent killed off Au auto manufacturing,

for example people have wanted utes for decades since the FC. yet thet simply continued with
