Welcome to the Gumbies FFC Catman Medal presentation for Season 30. Tonight we will be presenting four awards throughout the course of the evening:

Best player/poster
Voting for the Catman Medal this season consists of a sim component and a posting component. The top five players by Dream Team points in each game were awarded votes with five votes for the highest Dream Team score and one vote for the fifth-highest Dream Team score. Votes for posting have been awarded to all players that have contributed in a match thread with one vote for posting at least once in a match thread, two votes for posting at least five times and three votes for posting at least 15 times.
All sim and posting votes are tallied up and the player with the highest number of votes will be awarded the Catman Medal.

A new season begins and a chance for redemption sits on the horizon for The Gumbies. First up was the Roys who had beaten The Gumbies by a point in last seasons opener. This game was also decided by less than a goal, only in favour of The Roys. The Roys won the first two quarters to lead by 8 at halftime but a dominant third quarter from Taylor, Barrybran and cats2rise saw The Gumbies lead by 15 at the last break. The last quarter was a comedy of errors with nothing any Gumby did working. Our only goal for the quarter came from TalkingFootyNow1223 in an effort to calm the nerves of his teammates but The Roys responded with a few goals of their own, the last by JackNah_8 put The Roys up by 4 and with a follow up point from Mooch in the dying seconds it was game over. The two rookie recruits were just about best on ground. Spuddd helped himself to 25 disposals and 3 tackles while omgfridge had 21 disposals and a goal to go along with his brilliant 7 frees against. Rodney Dangerfield put in a solid claim on leading goal kicker with 4 goals.

THE GAME
Our pre-season Tittybong Cup success seems a world away after slumping to 0-2 in Season 30 of the Sweet FA against Mount Buller Demons.
Despite Spuddd kicking the first goal at The House of Gumby, we soon found ourselves 19 points down before Riviat reduced the margin to 13 points at quarter time. We battled hard in the second quarter but couldn’t find a way to make in-roads, and went into half time 5.9 (39) to the Demons 7.8 (50).
The arm wrestle continued in the third quarter. Two goals within a minute to StFly and omgfridge put us within a goal of the Demons but we couldn't find a way to edge in front. We went into three quarter time with everything to play for, down by just 6 points at 9.13 to 10.13.
Despite Barrybran rallying the troops at three quarter time, we conceded two quick goals to start the last quarter as Mount Buller took charge. They edged out to a 24 point lead before two late goals reduced the deficit as we lost 12.17 (89) to 14.17 (101).
Despite the poor result putting us at 0-2 to start the season, there were some great signs with Riv being our best with 33 disposals and 3 goals, well supported by cats2rise (16 hitouts, 17 disposals, 7 tackles), Spuddd (21 disposals, 70 DT points, omgfridge (19 disposals) and okeydoke7 (19 disposals, 7 tackles).
Our lack of discipline showed for the second week in a row, conceding 18 free kicks to just 10. Either that, or the umpires had it in for us.
We also need to work on our transition of the footy, as we somehow only had 12 inside 50s to 27. On the plus side, 29 scores from just 12 inside 50s is a pretty good conversion rate.
THE THREAD
Off the field, our early season posting form is fantastic. We had 5 of the 7 top posters in the match thread, with Baz leading the way, supported by cats2rise, Tiger God, Riviat and GWS Goose. It was great to see beez hit 30 posts, whilst cameos from omgfridge, Jivlain and Brick Loosener round out a total of 9 posters who hit double figures by the time Sunday evening hit. Whilst posting isn’t everything, its great to see so much involvement so early in the season.
UP NEXT
Round 3 sees us on the road to visit The Stadium In The Sky and the undefeated Las Vegas Bears (2-0, 4th, 109.69%). Gumbies FFC (0-2, 9th , 90.81%) need a win to state the least. In a 16 round season, we just cant afford to be 0-3.
We need to see some better ball movement through the middle of the ground and for omgfridge to get nasty again. No more Mr Nice Guy with only a paltry 3 free kicks against!

Most mediocre players find themselves delisted after after a season or two but Rodney Dangerfield had managed to rack up 188 games prior to this season so after winning a wooden spoon we figured we couldn't get much worse so we stuck him at full forward.
An average Sweet FA full forward will kick 3.5 goals per game yet after five rounds Rodders had amassed a grand total of 13 goals for 2.6 per game. I know what you're thinking - great ****ing idea, Baz.
But then the Festival of Rodders began...
Rodders kicked 51 goals as we went 8-3 over the next 11 games to finish fifth after the home and away season. Rodders kicked five bags of at least six goals over this period to finish fourth in the Fred Medal and earn himself an All-SFA berth at forward pocket. If that wasn't enough, Rodders kicked eight goals, including six in the second half, four in the fourth quarter, and the winning goal in our Elimination Final against the Las Vegas Bears.

Round 3. The Bears. Old teammates. Tittybong hangover. The Rodders curse. The less said about this match the better. An absolutely insipid effort in the first quarter resulting in a single Gumby goal to six opposition goals meant we ended the first break 34 down. On the plus side, we won the next 3 quarters given we only lost the match by 31 so swings and roundabouts. Taylor (23 disposals, 3 goals), beez (22 disposals, 6 tackles) and Riviat (22 disposals, 5 tackles) were the only shining lights on the day. You could make a case for omgfridge, GWS Goose and cats2rise also having serviceable games, but quite frankly I won't. Captain Barrybran was barely sighted, opting to spend his time chatting up waitresses at the bar. Rodney Dangerfield, despite hardly touching the pill, managed to kick another 3 goals to add to his leading goal Kicker tally.

In this round we played The Wonders at home. The Wonders, despite being a poor team on field, came out strong and matched us at every turn. They stifled our ball movement and managed to get some scores on the board in the process resulting a tight game for most of the match. They went into the third quarter with a slight lead but as well all know, The Gumbies are strong finishers and we managed to level the scores with very little time on the clock. A handy point to StFly put us up with less than 4 minutes remaining and who should pop up to secure the win? StFly. The bloke might not kick Rodders numbers, but he has kept us in games with important goals all season. 7 points up, the siren sounded, The Gumbies won. Taylor continued her great form with 29 disposals and a goal, StFly just did StFly things and kept us in it, Riviat started to announce himself to the competition with a blinding performance and Genghis Tron had significant impact after being moved from HBF early and NSWCROW was instrumental with doughnuts, 1 FA and -3DT.

Season 30 saw five players join the club - cats2rise, Genghis Tron, omgfridge, Riviat and Spuddd. cats2rise is a veteran of the league and Gumbies having played 80 games for us prior to this season across two stints, including a brief time as captain way back in season 6. Genghis Tron was an EKA Award winner with the Las Vegas Bears but stepped away from the board during season 29 before I caught him lurking around Big Footy and asked him to come and join us. Riviat played two seasons for the Bombers and had committed to playing for the failed Death Valley Serpents bid. I had experience working with Riviat and Genghis Tron as part of the the S29 Rising Star committee and knew these two would get along like a house on fire. Boy was I right! Thank you cats2rise, Genghis Tron and Riviat for your contributions to the Gumbies this season.
Spuddd joined us after participating in the Big Footy Tour of Qooty match on the Collingwood board prior to this season. He had previously played one game for the Baghdad Bombers but for all intents and purposes came to us as a rookie. Spuddd played all 19 games across a wing and half forward flank and posted in 14 of 19 match threads. I would like to thank Spuddd for joining us this season and hopefully we see more of you in season 31.
omgfridge was our only bona fide rookie in season 30 but boy we found a good one. Fridge joined the Gumbies from the West Coast Eagles board via the Club Room after I crossed paths with him playing WereDocker/werewolf on the Eagles board during the Covid break. Having showed interest in the commmunity I reached out to Fridge and guero to join the Gumbies but Fridge was keen to play for a different team and when guero
It took Fridge a couple of weeks to get into things properly however our Round 3 match thread against guero and the Bears brought him out of his shell and he never looked back. He fit in so well with the Gumbies that he even took on the captaincy midway through the season as we put together a 7-game winning streak. Unfortunately Fridge's inability to prepare teamsheets got me suspended for a couple of games and I've also had to pick up the slack by writing up this B&F could he couldn't be arsed.
omgfridge has somehow slid under the radar a bit across the wider league however he has been a popular teammate in match threads and the team PM, and has even joined in the Sweet FA Discord community for Friday night games.
Congratulations on a wonderful first season, Fridge. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we enjoyed having you around.

With a special rare verbal OP by ClarkeM, we faced off with the Royals for the first, but not the last time this season. At the time, we didn't care, pay attention or even bat an eyelid about the overhyped #stackedsix. Thinking back, maybe we should have paid them a little more attention and even do some scouting to figure out weaknesses. No, scouting involves effort.
Our first win of the season, and my first as a Gumby, was against the Wonders the previous week so we were riding on a natural first win high and feeling invincible coming into this game and match thread.
The Royals kicked out to a 16 point quarter time lead and we were beginning to wonder if there was any way back from this. Filthy was on fire and as the eventual Fred medallist, got them off to a flyer.
The second quarter was a lot more action packed and we managed to get our noses in front by a little before the Royals pegged back and overtook us to end the half a goal in front. We weren't blown out of the park, yet.
The third quarter started off eerily similar to the first with a flurry of goals from the Royals before we managed to stop the rot but by the end of the third, it was looking bleak with the Royals up by 24 and things not going acording to plan.
The last quarter was even worse with the home team scoring just a measly 1 goal 2 for the quarter with the Royals notching up 2 more goals of their own to run out eventual winners by 27.
Taylor was the standout in this game with 22 possessions and a whopping 11 marks. cats2rise had a decent game of his own but was outshone in the ruck. Rodney Dangerfield, our eventual saviour this season, only managed 1 goal 2.

Not much to write about with this match. We came up against The Furies on our home deck for a loss. The Furies are a typically low scoring affair, playing boring qooty without much flair. Their lackluster style obviously had an effect on The Gumbies with most of us looking pretty sleepy within the first few minutes of the match. We tried to match them but the sedatives kicked in and we were down early and never managed to come back. Brick Loosener was pretty much our only shining light as he helped himself to 25 disposals.
cats2rise and GWS Goose tried valiantly to keep the team in it to little avail. Rodney Dangerfield kicked 5.1 as he continued his march to the top of the Fred leaderboard.

Did we play this round? It felt like a training match. We played witches hats The Eagles in this round and absolutely smashed them. I'm talking Sydney Stack with a kebab level smashing. 4 goals straight in the 1st saw us enter the second term with confidence and it showed. We kicked 7.4 to 3.1 and probably could have scored more if we took our opportunities. The HBFers in conjunction with the mids had a field day running rings around their opponents, which wasn't hard considering most of them were in the foetal position for large parts of the game. We outscored them in the remaining quarters to win by 64 points. We left our inaccuracy at home this day to kick 21.7 for the match. An outstanding effort. Rodney Dangerfield took the piss with a bag of 6 goals, peterss was massive with an incredible 8 tackles, keeping the Hawks honest and bruised. cats2rise once again stood up and gave our mids the supply they crave. The backline was amazing, stopping any attacks dead in their tracks. The Hawks had no answers. Taylor showed her class and TalkingFootyNow1223 and Brick Loosener popped up with 4.1 each in what was a great forward effort. Once again, we won by 64 points lads. What a pathetic effort by the Hawks.

We played the Dragons at The House of Gumby this week and what a game it was. We started alright, ending the first quarter 5 up and it looked like we were going to come out hard and fast in the 2nd. The Dragons had other ideas. They had a great 2nd and 3rd quarter with immense pressure, leading by 30 at one point and went into the last change 10 points up. Despite the close scores it looked like the Dragons would run away with it, but The Gumbies said no and fought with desperation to secure the win. We had 10 of the last 13 scoring shots to turn the tide to run out winners by 12 points. This comeback gave us great confidence for the remainder of the season and it showed. It was a very even effort across the board (except the backline, with no defender registering more that 30DT) showing that when we are on, we are a great team. omgfridge, Brick Loosener and cats2rise all registered 70DT to keep us in it. Jivlain was very important, intercepting everything in sight ending in 7 marks, a goal and 3 handy frees for. GWS Goose continued to show why The Gumbies picked him up with a solid 68DT effort.
