Hall v Gibson

Firstly I'll start by saying Gibson is not a consistent KPD. His best is very good (ala playing on buddy) his worst bad.
I think what a lot of people are missing here is the context of where the sides are at. Add Rioli and Burgoyne and there you have some real x factor and pace. Gilham and Guerra to the backline will provide many more options for matchups and rebound, including Gibsons role. The dogs where minus Johnno virtually full strength. I see Hawthorns main weakness as their ruck division. They are solid all over the field and still won a flag with not much in the way of ruckman. I can't believe the bagging of Ladson on here. He is a good player who makes good decisions by foot. He missed plenty of footy last year and will be better for the run. No doubt the dogs look to have a good pick up in Hall and they looked really good last night but I'll reserve my judgement until they play for 4 points in the season proper

Shoenmakers had patches but he's terrible below his feet and he's anything but clean with ball in hand or by foot.

His decision making and use of the ball is extremely highly rated by everybody at Hawthorn, as well as by Leigh Matthews and Tom Harley (just last night). He can kick beautifully with both feet, and rarely misses a target - if you watched last night his kicking was excellent; he nailed a couple of passes that needed to be perfect, and they were.

As for agility - he was top 3 for the repeat sprints at draft camp, and now does most of the fitness/agility/running work with the Hawks midfield group.

His biggest problem is he's still a very young kid being asked to do a massive job in a depleted backline. When he was on Hall and Barry was leading last night, he did a great job - but as soon as a player like Hall or Brown drags him back to the goalsquare where his pace/fitness is useless and they can use their strength to push him around, he'll struggle (until he bulks up over another year or two).

I don't rate him. All the worst to him too. I hate players who leave clubs for bulls**t excuses. Just wanted to go Hawthorn to get more pictures in the Herald Sun Snaparazzi pages. I'm on to you Gibson :D

He was a Hawthorn supporter as a kid and his position in defence was in question long-term. I had no issue with him wanting to go but the way he did it wasn't great.

Given the club gave him the opportunity after he played VFL for a while and we picked him up as a rookie and elevated him, nobody else really gave him the time of day. I would expect those that had been given such a great opportunity would show more loyalty.

Gibson seems to think he is better than he actually is - he looks like he has that "FIGJAM" attitude.

Gee, some constructive posting right there and it goes a long way to explaining the reasons for the hawks issues with their defence. Well done Bombers_Forever - problem solved.

Why cant you quote?

What was Gibson plucked for if not to bolster the KP's down back?

I thought he was pretty poor on Gia which is a bigger worry than being man handled by Barry.

Hawthorn supporters are always going to look glowingly on their own, I've followed Ben's career at East Perth and was surprised when he was picked up on a main list, it's almost like a desperation move.

They've tried to bolster their Key backs, without actually picking up any key backs?

Stratton is a third tall, Kayler Thompson is also a third tall running defender.

Gibson is a third tall, not sure Shoenmakers has the agility to hold down a KP defensively.

Of all your tall's Lisle looks the most capable of moving backward.

Nobody in their right mind can say that Gibson played an awesome game and won his position.

but, all this criticism of the Hawks picking up Gibson to help with their defence would actually make sense if you presented a BETTER PLAYER that was AVAILABLE to pick up that we didn't. Until then, we picked up the best damn defender we could.

I'm really happy we got Gibson. He could have done with a bit more support from the midfield and having another tall guy such as Gilham in support will help a lot.

I'd be a lot happier if Gibson played a perfect game and kept his opponents goalless/statless, but for now we'll go with the wait-and-see-the-realstuff line.

So in summary he was rubbish.

Will be a good reality check for Josh I think. As is well known he thinks he is god's gift to the game/world. Might stop him checking himself out in the mirror/HS social pages every 5 seconds.

He had that at North Melbourne too. Hopefully the Hawthorn culture beats it out of him.

Gibson will be a useful defender, but it won't be against the gorillas.

Hopefully he gets a player like Ben Warren in this week's NAB Challenge against the Roos. It's a good matchup for him.

Had an absolute shocker.

But yeah, if listening to inneundo about how much the guy likes himself makes you feel like a big man, then congratulations.

Absolute tosser of a comment.

Idiots in the media constantly tell clubs that they should get player x to fill a structural hole, as though opposition clubs will just roll over and let that player go. We've been copping this in relation to key forwards and you're now unfortunately copping it in relation to key backmen. If the likes of Scarlett and Lake are off limits, what are Hawthorn supposed to do? Just like all the moronic calls for the Dogs to chase an unavailable Fev in recent seasons.

Hall won plenty of games for the Swans off his own boot. He's looking fit and firing and break has done him a world of good. If he can keep it under control (and again, the time off will help here) I reckon he might just lead the Dogs to the granny.

As for Gibson, I doubt he will line up against Hall in season proper.

Milky would murder Josh.

He was pretty ordinary against Freo.

He was hardly alone there. But then he did some very nice things towards the end of the game when we were coming back.

Against Geelong, Hawkins was looking very dangerous, we moved Lachy onto him and Hawkins went right out of the game.

He's a slow burner.

Gibson is in the team as a replacement for Murphy. 3rd Defender. And to be the run-with defender for those guys like Riewoldt and Pavlich.

If Hall plays at FF I'd expect Gilham to get him. Or Shoenmakers. Gibson would be choice number three thanks.

However you look at it, Gibson gives us more flexibility than Murphy, but doesn't replace our "Lack of Croad" drama.
