I’ve been processing this for a while as I am one of the supporters that thought his time was up.
But Dimma single handedly made the club what it is today.
Yes he had massive help from the likes of Benny, Peggy etc but it was him who instilled the Richmond man culture and transformed the club to a bottom dweller to the envy of the competition for five years.
I have absolutely no doubt that without Damien Hardwick we would not have any of the 2017, 2019 or 2020 premierships.

If we’ve truly make progress as a club, we should be confident that we can do it all again - with a new coach

What you are saying is correct in nearly every sense except he didn't single handedly do it.

By default of his strengths its impossible to even suggest it. Dimma as a "game day" coach i think most be would agree is not overl remarkable or groundbreaking - he did rely on a very diverse and intelligent team of assistants that aided in that. That is not said to insult Dimma, but respect the real strengths Leppa, McCrae, Caracella, Rutten added to the club.

Dimma's biggest strength was he was incredible at bringing people together, and getting them to work together to achieve above and beyond results. He was conductor of people & able to see the strengths in them outside of football that could help utlisise a positive culture, something Richmond never had. By default of these strengths, you could never say he did it singlehandedly - he always succeeded as a group. But that doesn't dilute from the success he had and his role in it at all. He lead the group which turned this clubs fortunes around. 5 of his assistants in Leppa, Carracela, Rutten, McCrae & now McQualter have gone on to coach games at AFL senior level. That is really impressive. Only Clarke has yet to transition into it yet.

It tells you he definitely had a lot of quality around him, but he also could make people better or even the best they can be

Did you miss the Essendon horrorshow?

Was there to watch it unfold. The narrative seems to be that the wheels have totally fallen off. I don’t think it’s that bad but when our system doesn’t work it always looks ugly.
Only one week earlier we dominated the cats. People can pick their own truth I suppose.

I agree but I was just being a bit pedantic when you said a week ago. It was 2 weeks ago that we beat the Cats.

We are certainly capable of beating anyone. Unfortunately we can also lose to anyone.

Hmm Gives uo $1 mil a year to help out Crazy Vossy doe what $200k ? when he could walk into any job
only carlton supporters would believe that
I mean it's pretty clear money isn't the motivation here. If he cared about the $1million he would still be coaching. Stress and the fact his messages didn't have the same impact they once did were.

New club means his voice has a much stronger impact again. Assistant coach means way less stress.

I would be surprised if he coaches at all next year, but if he does I think an assistant coach position may be possible.

Well that's good then. Losing to anyone is more mental than skill. That's why Dimma quit when he said his voice wasn't helping that anymore.

And that's something a new coach can actually change quickly. They can't quickly make the team more skilled, get better players in or change the gameplan. But a new message and voice can help the team stay focused.

Maybe Dimma leaving will shake them awake

Balme wont be far off retirement Dimma slots straight into his cushy role of being a mentor to everybody.
The only time we see him back will be flag reunions

I'd like to think it will. Even if it makes our guys play man on man defence when the opposition play the chip chip game will be something.

How certain is it that Gale is leaving at the end of the season? Hate to see him go, but it seems to be the next story developing

I didn't realize how far off the soft cap is from pre covid levels. Next year its going to be RAISED to $7.2 million? Which will still sit $2.5 million below 2019? Take inflation into account and that like $10.7 million.

So basically you need your entire staff to take a 32% pay decrease or cut staff completely and then either get the remaining staff to cover those areas or just completely forgo those areas. Thats ****ed. Anyone know why? What reason does the AFL have here??

Wonder if Gil and his mates at AFL house are taking a 32% pay cut?

Yup it’s ****ed especially when we take into account it’s a football department soft cap so under that umbrella we have

Coaching staff
Recruiting both internal and scouts
Fitness/medical
Player welfare

To cut so deeply into it but not bring it back to what it was is crazy

It’s so minnows don’t overspend trying to compete.

It's bringing every club down to the lowest minnow level. Long term it can't be good for the game as a whole. What other professional sport in the world would do similar, imagine telling Man United they are only allowed to pay their total staff the same as Stockport County?

Maybe they need that missing 32% to go into the bottomless money pit that it uses to keep Gold Coast and GWS going?

95% - AFL want him, the clubs want him and its more $.
And he's pretty much achieved everything he set out to do at Richmond. Got us back in the black (one of the most successful clubs financially), 100k membership, 3 flags. He awakened the sleeping giant. Imagine what he could do to the whole comp if given the opportunity.
