He would have gone to the draft. Which is exactly what Reid would threaten to do if you didn't trade him where he wanted to go. If he wants to leave West Coast have no control of the destination under the current system.
100% players have a right of veto for trades.

Say West Coast wanted to trade Reid to the highest bidder, he can say no. In American sports they don't have that right.

For the Eagles, need to either sign him up for more years or trade him now and get the best deal they can that Reid will agree to. Reid out of contract and requesting a trade is a very bad outcome for the Eagles.

Players picking clubs is a goodwill thing. It's not a written rule.
When has a club ever said to a leaving player “you can’t go to the team you want - you must go to the team we tell you to”?

Its never happened.

Goodwill?

They pick the employer who wants them, fits the lifestyle/ location they want and is offering the best deal.
Clubs aren't under any obligation to make deals with certain clubs. There are mechanisms for players to change clubs. Clubs deal with specific clubs out of goodwill.

There are ten teams in Victoria who would be happy to sign Harley Reid

Chris Judd wanted to go to Collingwood I believe.

Because in this case the AFL is their employer and the clubs are branches.

It’s not uncommon in other industries for people to shuffle around locations based on opportunity and how it benefits your employer and not just individual self interest

Individual self interest?

Like starting a family. Settling down. Mantaining a stable housegild with kids in school. Living closer to the family and friends you chose to?

The only organisation type that fits your view is the military where you are sometimes provided preferences. Not choices. And the toll that type of career has on families is tough.

Key point. Our sports stars are not paid anywhere near what overseas stars are. Payer the US are getting more than an entire AFL list gets paid here. So let's not compare the two systems because the pay scales are just so far apart it's not funny.

Outside of fresh draftees/rookies, players are also not paid anywhere near the average Australian salary. You want the big bucks through free agency there needs to be a fair trade off for clubs.

Clubs get compensated for free agents leaving.

They also get advantage from free agents arriving at no draft cost.

They free up cap space to chase other players or open a list spot for a need.

Players who reach free agency have done their time, they arent players in their early 20's who have yet to repay the clubs investment.

RFA clubs can match and force a trade and a better result.

Not alot wrong with the current system until players and clubs force the PSD route more often. Which currently is hardly ever.

Have you got an example?
Unless we know exactly what the players requests were before being traded we will never know exactly but i would say trades that dont get done or even trades like the recent Houston trade. It was Carlton Carlton Carlton
then become Collingwood.

So no proof? Port 100% would have preferred the Blues or Roos as they had pick 2 and 3 - if clubs can force them to go anywhere Houston wouldn't be at the Pies.

LOL you are hilarious
what proof do you require ? maybe an interview with Houston with a balaclava on his head admitting he wanted to get to Carlton.

You are a very funny man Bill , Keep trying old friend

So he didn’t want to go to the Pies but Port forced him? This is what the the topic is as you’re struggling to follow.

OR

Maybe he just realized the deal was not going to get done and had to accept his 2nd choice
only other option was North and he certainly didn't want to go there.

Keep up old friend , You will get there

That’s not really true. I work retail and people go between various stores within the same city.

Transfer to other locations for better wages or bonus or opportunities or just even vacancies.

People certainly travel the distance between Collingwood and Richmond on an average day to get to work. Some friends travel over 1 hour to get to work. Knew someone who did a 2 hour commute because it was the right career opportunity. (Although that’s a bit unreasonable to ask someone to travel that far)

It’s a fairly normal thing across many industries. If a player gets traded from Richmond to Collingwood or north Melbourne or Carlton or hawthorn ect. It’s really not that much of a lifestyle change and if moving states it won’t really affect their life if they play for the crows or port. Or Suns/lions

The system is working fine.

Its greedy fans who are far too invested in an entertainment sport that are willing to turn peoples / families lives upside down just to get a slightly better draft pick / trade result.

Lets just stop and think about that for a moment shall we.

Players include partners, wives, children, schools, friends and families.
