One obvious improvement could be - less injuries.

This could be described as - "an injection of continuity".

Context matters, until it doesn't suit your narrative...

Moving on several injury-prone players, bringing in a new S&C Coach (Inness from Swans).

The natural improvement of an impressive young group.

Adding more speed to our mids, new 3rd talls - back & forward.

There's a clear & present upside to be had.

Could say that about every team. You also moved on Kennedy who played every game and Owies who missed one. I don't think either of those guys move the needle but they were available each week.

Brisbane won the flag with O-Mac doing his shoulder in the prelim and McCarthy, Doedee, Coleman, Gardiner all out for extended periods.

Collingwood had Elliot, De Goey, Mihocek, Mitchell, McStay etc. all play 15 games or fewer.

Carlton aren't a bad side, but they aren't that young or that impressive. 12, 13, 13, wins is a pretty accurate reflection of where Carlton are at.

2024 John Nicholls Medal top 10

1. Patrick Cripps - 204 votes (30 in 2025)
2. Nic Newman - 148 (32)
3. Sam Walsh - 147 (25)
4. Jacob Weitering - 144 (28)
5. George Hewett - 141 (30)
6. Blake Acres - 122 (30)
7. Tom De Koning - 121 (26)
8. Harry McKay - 117 (28)
9. Charlie Curnow - 116 (28)
10. Matt Kennedy - 110 (28, gone)

Saad, Docherty, Williams, McGovern are all already 30 and you brought in Haynes. It's a win now profile.

A quick question - do you consider Collingwood a contender this year?

It's a win now profile.
You'd hope it's a win now profile after all the years at the bottom. But we are not an old team and we have made recent list management decisions to give us the best chance of extending our window.

The key is to be already recruiting players now either via trade or draft that will replace the ones nearing 30 in 2-4 years. That way when the likes of Newman, Docherty, Cripps, Saad etc move on we not only have replacements but replacements that have a few years of experience at VFL/AFL level. That way the drop off wont be as significant hopefully.

Think we have done that in recent years with
Motlop, Cowan, E.Hollands, O.Hollands, Binns, Lord, Moir, Smith, Wilson, Lemmey, HOK all being picked up. The first four have already been integrated into the team whilst the others will likely transition in soon.

Of the teams that played finals, Carlton (112 games avg) were more experienced than:
  1. Port (107)
  2. Hawks (108)

And older (26yr 5mo) than:
  1. Hawks (25y 6)
  2. Port (25y 10)
  3. GWS (26y 3)
  4. Sydney (26y 4)
  5. on par with Brisbane (26y 5)

Yes.

They won the flag in 2023 and won 16 games and lost a prelim by a point in 2022.
Ok so given the prehistoric nature of their list - our “window” your talking about may be open for a while.

You may also need to research a little more re Carlton’s young players coming through - love to hear your thoughts on Moir, Lord, Smith, Cowan, Binns, Motlop, E Hollands, O’Keeffe & Wilson?

Although you may know something about Jagga Smith - we landed him with pick 3.

Regarding Owies & Kennedy - they both played plenty of games - our list adjustments gives as a chance to step forward.

Motlop, Williams & Durdin have Owies covered.

Cripps, Walsh, Hewett, Cerra, Hollands & Smith, Cincotta & Cottrell have Kennedy covered.

Carlton endured the 2nd most games lost to injury last year - anybody looking beyond their own bias can see an improvement in a list that was sitting a clear 2nd on the AFL ladder at round 16.

These blokes haven't played an AFL game yet out of that group so nobody knows - Moir, Lord, Smith, O'Keeffe and Wilson.

In the same way it would be harsh to declare a team premiership certainties after achieving zilch for 3 decades but some clubs supporters seem to..

Nobody has declared Carlton “premiership certainties”.

That’s a poor effort even for your Bay 13 standard.

You've convinced me. Carlton are flag certs. It's the injuries. Even when it was the bears I knew it was them.

If I only I had said this:

...a couple of OK experienced players going out and a top 3 pick coming in maybe they are hoping an injection of youth will help, similar to Port when they traded up to get Rozee (and also drafted Butters and Drew).

oh wait, I did. Jagga Smith could be a gun, and he could be a gun from day one. But he's also 18/19 and bloke that is carrying you with superhuman efforts is 30.

I have nothing against Carlton, and have nothing for Collingwood. I don't think it's news that Collingwood have achieved more recently. And they added Dan Houston who is a gun. Carlton do date have not done anything to warrant being talked about any differently to Essendon, St Kilda and any of the other teams in the 6-12 bracket.

The point of this thread is;

“ has this Carlton list already peaked”.

Please keep on point.

Has anyone announced Carlton as flag certainties? Nope.

Sorry I mistook this conversation to be something other than trolling.
