As the number 1 club in SA? Crows haven't finished higher than Port on the ladder since 2017, and it looks like Port have gone past the Crows in their rebuild too.

JHF, Rozee, Butters is going to be a seriously good centre square trio, and might even rival the Judd, Cousins, Kerr trio in 5 years time.

Weird question. As in the number 1 club in terms of popularity? I wouldn't think so. And based on on-field performances I don't think the Crows have finished higher than Port since 2017 so that's not a new thing either.

Port remain the second side in Adelaide

even if Port catch up numbers wise, port's traditional supporter base has less disposable income.......and footy is a business

In terms of members Crows still ahead.
Not a huge difference when you look at last year's numbers though. In 2022 the Crows had 63.1k members and Port had 58.6k members. Neither club made finals last year either so it's an interesting comparison.

So what happens if Port's membership base eclipses the Crows this year? Does it just mean Crows supporters are more disenfranchised?

I wasn't sure what metric OP was using.

However on this one, Crows still had more members in 2022 despite Port being at the top end of the ladder in 2020/1 and Crows being at the opposite end. That seems pretty clear cut.

Raises an interesting point. Port has always been the number 2 supported club because of the history of the two clubs. In the SANFL you were either Port or the Anti Ports. Port tried to get into the AFL first because SANFL weren't interested. SANFL then cut our lunch and essentially created an SA side that pulled everyone who was not with Port. These events happened 30 years ago. Port has a younger fanbase and the events that led to people being anti Port were 30+ years ago. The Crows wouldn't want to take for granted their fanbase. Port have been better than Adelaide for most of the past 10 years and all of the past 5. They're a hard list to read at the moment. They'll point to their youth, but their youth have been 15 touch 1 goal a game types since they were drafted. There is almost no player who has improved significantly under Nicks. Fogarty is the only one. There were alot of 'he's going to be a star' announcements with players like Schoenberg, Scholl, McAdam, Mchenry, Thiltorpe. They have alot of 'almost' AFL footballers. At 18-20, that's potential. Some of these guys are 22-23 now, it's now or never for them to take the next step. If Adelaide don't get serious improvement out of a good chunk of their list in the next 2 years, they will need to do another complete rebuild. That's an entire generation of being at the bottom ala Carlton. Imagine if kids grow up having never seen a strong Adelaide side. I don't think they can afford to have many more bad years before it starts costing them fans ... permanently.

Having said that, alot of water under the bridge. They are alot more financially viable. They can afford whichever coach they want, they can sack an underperforming one, and when the football department caps get loosened they will be able to push that too. It's only been sheer nepotism and incompetence from the board that have allowed it to go on this long. On one hand I can't see them getting much better, on the other throwing down cash for a Buckley type coach could squeeze that extra bit out of all of those early twenty somethings.

Crows is prob 70% of the SA footy supporting public. 25% Port and 5% others. Surprisingly quite a few Hawthorn/Essendon/Carlton supporters as they won flags up until the crows joined.

So much like the Eagles... The crows could be terrible for decades but there would still be more crows fans than port fans

I wouldn’t say 70% crows, 25% port. Probably 60% crows, 37% port and 3% other. Heaps of port fans in the country towns.

No, never will. they will always be Port Power. The Crows are much bigger and the oldest AFL club in the state with more success, more fans and lets face it, when the crows are up and about they run this city/state. clubs go through cycles and right now the crows are rebuilding and port are in their window. wont stay like this forever. these two clubs have real hate for each other and the fans hate each other. its not banter or light hearted fun its real hate. This is a dumb thread if I've ever seen one.

No. We won't be the biggest supported. Likely ever.

We both aren't in rebuilds, so your 2nd point is weird.
LOL you are not in a rebuild.. your window is wide open and the time on your premiership clock os 11:59pm.. your time is now. Bt you are right on your other points "

Nah, we have literally been filling our list with young talented players since the draft of Rozee etc. we have done a mini rebuild for the last couple of year and currently still in it

Both are pretty big clubs recently. No need for the constant dick measuring competition. Both have a pretty big following. Both clubs are in different stages in terms of performance.
Yeah, both healthy clubs with good followings. Port probably do a better job game day at attracting a younger audience IMHO AND they are the only "traditional" club to actually join the AFL, the rest were expansion clubs (Sydney being a transplant).

Crows have a larger general footprint of the state and city of Adelaide.

Better to compare Fremantle and West Coast, who are both composite clubs (I'm sure people will argue its a South/East freo combo but thats composite).

In JPetro83's world Walker Texas Ranger is still on the telly, his kickavic t-shirt still gets a roll & Modra-mania is still bigger than fruchocs.

Little bit insecure there are you?

I think you'd find there is some connection to SA footballers there. Some good SA players in the early 90s from those clubs. I had Essendon as a 1st team, then 2nd team when Port came in up until ASADA because a) Wanganeen et al and b) they pumped the Crows in 1993.

It depends on what you mean by number one. In terms of recent performance, the two clubs are always trading places. Only once have we met in a final - in 2005. The Crows haven't looked like it for five years, but that will change.

I think two thirds Crows, one third Port is still a good rule of thumb when it comes to support and I can't see that mix changing much. When it comes to memberships, we are at a nadir and they are at a zenith. They might even temporarily overtake us in paid membership numbers, but it's easy to see why when Crows memberships cost a bloody fortune these days and the side has been bad for so long - the longest spell out of the eight in our club's history.
