I get the feeling that CJ's form issues are injury related and he'll show us the player he really is next season, much the way Impey has this year. We have short memories but CJ showed patches of dominance last year
100%. I am surprised at all the negative Nancy's on here this season about CJ. He is arguably our most promising player with a massive X factor when he has had a clear run without injury. Short memories. He is a run and carry machine and really strong in the air which will add another option to our side. Cut him some slack please he's been carrying niggles all season clearly wasn't playing at the same capacity this season as past.

HAWK SET TO SIGN

HAWTHORN key defender James Blanckis finalising a new deal to remain at Waverley Park after joining the club just over 12 months ago.

The 22-year-old has played 16 games since being recruited with the second-last live pick in the 2022 mid-season rookie draft.

Young Hawthorn ruckman Max Ramsden is believed to be the only player from last year's mid-season intake to secure a deal for 2024 and beyond, with Blanck close to joining him.

Hawthorn list manager Mark McKenzie secured the priority signatures of Will Day and Dylan Moore early in the year, as well as Jarman Impey and top-10 pick Cam Mackenzie more recently, and is now working through a few other contracts.

The Hawks are understood to be close to locking in half-back Seamus Mitchell and small forward Tyler Brockman.

James Worpel commenced talks with the club in recent weeks, following an impressive first half of 2023 from the inside midfielder who has recaptured the 2019 form that saw him win the Peter Crimmins Medal.

Dual All-Australian Chad Wingard doesn't have a contract for next year and faces an uncertain future heading into the closing months of the season, given he is currently playing for Box Hill and has struggled with durability issues in recent years.

Fergus Greene, Jacob Koschitzke, Finn Maginness and Lachie Bramble are some of the other Hawks currently without deals for next season. – Josh Gabelich
There should have been good news this week delayed for whatever reason but soon

Thats the best indication we have who is under the pump with those 5 names.

I reckon Fergus is done. Wonder if we can move Maginness to rookie list for 1 more season just feels like he is a slow burn who can still get there but suspect his papers are stamped we do make clear decisions.

Bramble and Kosi very interesting given both playing seniors.

Jeka not named does have a contract for 24?

Lynch the other who is done.

I understand why some people have gone cold on CJ. He is an exciting player, but similar to Frost, he's very high risk and high reward. Even when he was playing his most promising footy he did have a habit of defensive lapses that were punished fairly heavily, or streaming forward without options and just kicking it blindly.

Maybe that sort of play will gel better with how we've been playing recently and he'll come back and be a star, but at the same time it's also tough to see him cruising back into the side with how good Weddle and Mitchell have been.

His game against North last year coming back from injury was a benchmark. He was awesome both offensively and defensively He was everywhere with his speed and agility third man up and then running and kicking it inside 50. That is the CJ we want. We know he can do it he has done it before

I don't disagree, I'm just saying that considering we don't have an absence of options I can understand why people have cooled on CJ.

RR was just pointing out how fickle a few around here can be when assessing some of our players. The same thing happened the last couple of seasons with Impey who was clearly ailing because of injury. To be fair we all do it especially when we're racking up loss after loss.

Kinda funny how some players get better when they’re not playing and others get worse.

CJ is no more risky with the ball in hand than any other half back we have, but now he’s being compared to Frost and his brain farts.

CJ isn't Frost level of trust, but he isn't exactly trustworthy

C'mon, bit of a misrepresentation. I said high risk and high reward like Frost, not that they were equally unpredictable. Someone can say Zurhaar plays like De Goey, it's true but it doesn't mean Zurhaar is anywhere near as good.

CJ's run out of HB is all dependent on if he has decent options presenting up forward. With him playing injured earlier this season combined with Lewis being out injured its no coincidence that CJ's form looked like :poo:. FWIW I prefer having Weddle running off of HB who I feel is a stronger defender than CJ. I prefer CJ being the link man on the wing but those two are definitely interchangeable with each other.

Offensively CJ is better.

Where CJ can struggle a little is defensively. He’s like Scrim where his intercept game is really strong but his ability to constantly defend players can lapse at times.

He’s the sort of guy that can be anything once he puts it together. He just hasn’t yet. Injuries definitely haven’t helped this.

Still think he needs to be tried on a wing. Offensive and Defensive. Athletic beast. Very well liked amongst the Group and from what I can glean, the coaching group.

People overplay his bad moments.

You are the only one I recollect repeatedly stating Fergus is done, yes he doesn't have a contract yet but should have a 1 yr extn soon. Sam is aware of his quality and much needed for depth as he showed when Lewis was injured.

Kosi too I expect to be given 1 yr extn if he stitched another set of good games.

Jeka is a wait and watch for last list spot based on how he performs at BH as CHB, been good in the last game.

Lynch and Chad are surely done with Chad maybe getting relisted for other qualities if needed.( assuming he is not traded and available).
Morris I think is done too.

Maginess maybe too but could be in fight for that last list spot.

Yep I am putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 with Ferg. I'm just concerned how quickly he was out of the side after being tried in another role and struggling. I hope not but spots are incredibly tight this season. Kosi was in the wilderness but may have saved his career. Let's hope Ferg can do the same.

CJ’s disposal is fine. My issue with him is his running lines/timing. If he was better at hitting an angle that took him past the next line, it would be a quantum leap in his game. Maybe he needs to speak to Nash/Breust and learn rugby?

100%

CJ just sometimes runs himself in to trouble. Doesn't have the composure yet to work his way out of sticky situations yet so either gets caught HTB or turns it over.

It will come with experience and time. I'd much prefer CJ taking them on rather than playing it safe.

My main concern with CJ is his fumbling and with his pace he needs to rectify this as he would not be under so much pressure if his one touch improves.
It’s as if he is not concentrating on watching the ball into his mitts and then worrying about where the pressure is coming from?

This is all the more reason to put him on the wing where he'd have more open spaces
