Autopsy Hawks vs Saints - tear it apart here

Hmmm even in our 3 peat years we dropped games like this all to often, by losing on the bell or letting a run on sink us. Two weeks in a row with half a new side we've stopped the opps run on and got the lead back - got to be happy with that, even with playing fumble bum footy today.

And we will be playing our fourth 6 day break next week against the crows. I'm not sure if any team has ever won after four consecutive 6 day breaks. I know winners on the crack of three 6 day breaks are less successful than they should be.

No, we won't be doing our fourth consecutive break, it will be our second in a row, and third in total...

Great game today fellas :thumbsu: good luck for the rest of the season

against any other team you would have won. was a good battle. some good signs. starting to see why they took mccartin.. two of those crunching pack marks, two weeks in a row, even after concussing himself doing it last week.

Howe needs time but I still think he is our best youngster and see many standout qualities in him compared to what I see with O'Rourke.

Neither are setting the world on fire atm though and Clarko is probably still trying to work out which one amongst other young players deserve spots atm. I'll back in he and the other coache's judgements.

Either way it's exciting that we are seeing these kids play and still managing to win games of footy. In the longrun this will benefit us whilst hopefully maintaining top 4 finishes.

Positives: Bank the 4 points, thought TO had some glimpses today, and had a couple of good moments in defense.

Negatives: The pathetic commentary today from Der-wayne and the crew. Aside from the constant shouting and bleating about the 2 goal breeze, the pathetic cheerleading from the commentary box for the Saints was annoying to say the least. Though I took particular delight in how disappointed they sounded when the comment "Hawthorn just keep finding a way" was passed.

A quick scan of the game day thread shows some supporters to be bloody 6 year olds. Barely one player escaped from some sort of abuse at one point. Yeah footy is frustrating at times but this is a squad who's delivered time after time after time. Please take a deep breath before you press "post reply". This ain't Richmond.
Yeah, just wait till we aren't there in September.

One day it's gonna happen, and some Hawks fans heads are gonna go the fullblown Malthouse.

3 of the 4 games played we've been smashed in general field play, really don't know how we're winning, today was the worst
but ya gotta keep the faith, we'll pump the crows next week for a 4 - 1 awesome start. Go Hawks.

Yep, and we really can't complain about these b2b 6 day breaks in the early rounds as we asked for the Easter Monday game. Would love to swap it for the Easter Friday game if that ever eventuates

how dare you have perspective

Another York Park masterpiece. o_O

Played like a side who was really feeling it from the week before after playing on a cement surface.

Their midfield killed Hawthorn's and that wasn't helped by McEvoy's woeful ruck work. Taps it to the opposition more than he does a teammate. Whenever the Saints were looking dangerous, McEvoy was the designated ruck. Whenever Hawthorn looked in control, or at worst, breaking even, Ceglar was rucking. It's not who the mids were at the time as Mitchell spent most of the game in the centre, Shiels was in there Lewis was in there, Rioli was in there, and all the other experienced mids were in there. At least 2 of them contested the center bounces so using the "There were youth in the center when McEvoy was rucking" doesn't suffice.
The same thing has happened every game this year, whenever the opposition midfield look to be dominating, McEvoy has been the ruck. It's a good thing he offers stuff around the ground, has a tank, and has the ability to contest in the fwd line because he's a liability in the center.

The inside mids really struggled today and looked more tired than the other. Langford had a barry and Shiels looked to be really feeling the effects of a tough first up run.

With the midfield getting killed, the backline was under immense pressure. Who in their right mind would think that going in with 1 KPD would be a good idea against a side that were going in with 3 KPF's? Litherland didn't have a matchup. Stratton didn't have a matchup. Hodge was having to play as a KPD. Birchall was having to stand and take some hits to help out the undersized defenders. It was a bonehead idea from the match committee and that same bonehead idea was what they tried against Geelong, which backfired and then some.
"Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it." The Crows will slaughter Hawthorn if they try this undersized approach. Hypothetically Stratton will be manning Betts, so Gibbo will go to Lynch and Frawley to Jenkins. Who will be on Walker? Litherland?

TOB was encouraging. I liked his game. Kept repeat leading and provided a target all day until he was moved back.

Ceglar was really good. His interrupted preseason is showing in the second halves though.

Birchall was good today and big when it counted.

Few positives from this game, but there rarely is in Tassie. Bank the points, rethink the team selections and move on to the MCG.

Huh? We've played Monday, Sunday, Sunday and Saturday...

I listened to the game on the radio. There were worrying sounds around the second quarter again as last week...we should have been able to break the shackles today and we couldn't!

It sounded like we didn't play well today across the board...except for Mitchell.
We are getting killed at centre bounce clearances. We have so all games bar West Coast. If your theory stands up about McEvoy..I'll watch the replay..then this needs to change...otherwise if not Adelaide will slaughter us at the centre and then it lands in their forward line...bye bye Charlie!

I had a stream with no sound and listened to the ABC it was the same so much anti Hawk cheering

Tit bits after reading:

We need to get JOM or Heppell

JOR is ahead of Howe

Brand should have played today if he was fit & played on Bruce. Chip could have ran off Patty & compensated for Gibbo not playing

Anyone knocking Gus's panic/long kicks from defence should look at Smith & explain the difference

TOB held his own & was close to good... Fwd & def! Why the F%^]... Shoey apprentiship mk2

Old legs need a rest if possible after a game like the Doggies! Unless you are Sammy "The Gun" Mitchell

Lewis is 1 game off stinking up his elite status & 2 games off being dropped.

Gus has had his 1 chance before the bye

Duryea isn't doing himself any favours when everyone is fit

Hodge Should not have played. Didn't play bad but will need to bring his AA game next week

Shiels needed the run

Damien Caroll needs to be accountable for the clearence/stoppage smashings that we have been getting if it continues! Ratts might have to be the "senior midfield advisor" if things continue downhill

Big boy & Cegs will be a AA combination by the end of the year

Hill is an essential piece to the premiership puzzle

Is it possible to play Gunner, Rough & Cyril at CHF with Sicily, TOB & Breust deep forward? Sorry Poppy... Off the bench

Did I say TOB had an ok first hit out :)

I dont think Hartung was that bad his kicking and breaking the lines running was good today and thats his role he tries to do the defensive stuff unlike say a previous winger of ours Clinton Young but is so small he gets pushed out easily but at least he has a crack.

So badly need our mids to step up Lewis played well in the 4th but was so poor and a big 2016 disappointment. Langfords been good Shiels needs time, badly need Hodge and Burgoyne in there = need Gibbo back.

Overally ill look at the young players Howe had a shocker should not get another game untill he fixes his kicking it is so loopy puts a simple kick twice as hard and then we get caught out seriously good player at finding the ball but by god he needs to fix his skills, very smart player though right now id rather O Rourke or give Hardwick/Willsmore/Lovell a shot.

O' Brien was crap as a key FWD despite 2 goals Sicily is miles ahead but he was great in the 4th behind the ball, should deserve to play in the backline as his reading of the play and skills were great almost the anti Schoenmakers as when the heat was on he made the right decisions in the backline. Hope we persisit with that as i think he can be good. Still not sure on Litherland does nothing wrong but not much right really a meh player but we will see certainly not our worst.

It was about this time last year , when we lost to Port & were 2-2....(including loss to scum - close game)

I said to my kids..."we are cooked, stick a fork in us"....look how that turned out ;)

Port ended up missing Finals....and we ended up doing OK from memory.

Kids constantly remind me of it ! :D

We follow a truly amazing football team folks, regardless of where we end up on the podium this year.

*** do I swear & carrying on like a pork chop watching games ? You bet I do ! I expect nothing but perfection from our boys but when it doesn't happen I throw all the toys out the cot ! Sure is a roller coaster this AFL game but at least I have chosen the best team to 'ride the bumps with grin'

Go Hawks

The forward line has looked dysfunctional all year without Roughead. .
Gunston, Sicily and O'Brien all had periods in defence
Poppy, Cyril and Breust were well and truly in the centre square rotations
Cegs and McEvoy combined spent about a quarter and a half forward

So no permanent forwards
