Not holding back on sledges - just not sledging upon the basis of the illness itself is what I'm saying. Just don't think it's necessary and NOT sledging based on someone's illness isn't patronizing (surely??)
I see where you're making the distinction but I don't believe it should matter. If you can cop sledging about your appearance or whatever else then you should be able to cop it about that too.

I never actually copped any sledges about my depression but only because even I didn't know I had it and it didn't effect my playing (in fact it only really got to be a real issue for me once I stopped playing but that's another matter). I would cop sledges fairly often however and sometimes they were about things I was subconscious about. I never let those things bother me on the field though because I knew they were only being said to put me off my game and I took it as a mark of respect of my ability that they felt they needed to sledge me to try and slow me down. If those same things were said to me off the field then they would've hurt me either a little or perhaps a lot depending on the context.

In no way am I discounting that sledging of this kind to be condoned that Mitch Clark was allegedly
I'd like to pose a question. Why did Selwood bring it up on the footy show of all places and not through a complaints process. Was this the forum for it. It seemed like it was intended to do a couple of things from his and the clubs point of view. I'm sceptical and think subtext is at play here. We did demolish them on the football field and Geelong hate losing. I'm just putting 2 an 3 together.

From memory Damian Barrett brought it up and put the question to Selwood.

I did wonder this myself.

IF I had a mate with depression I wouldn't bring it up on a tv show unless he was a loud/proud ambassador for beyond blue.

People prone to depression can have it triggered by certain things. Constant public reminders of it would be a potential trigger.

Exactly!

...IF I had a mate with depression I wouldn't bring it up on a tv show unless he was a loud/proud ambassador for beyond blue...
Completely inappropriate to use the TFS and not formally complain. They showed no spine on the field and it seems they are taking that approach off field.

It's called an alley-oop, isn't it?

Yea and where did he get the tip off? Love Hawthorn to sue Joel if he's making shit up.
While this is a likely possibility, to throw blame on Selwood without evidence is to do exactly what everyone else is doing to Hawthorn players who may or may not have said these things either.

The article has been updated, sounds to me like we called Selwood's bluff

UPDATE: Hawthorn has contacted Geelong over an allegation Mitch Clark was sledged about his depression during their Easter Monday AFL clash.
But the Hawks added it has been difficult to work out exactly what happened.
They also have reminded their players the club does not condone any sort of on-field vilification.
The Hawks football department spoke to their Geelong counterparts after Cats captain Joel Selwood raised the issue on Channel Nine on Thursday night.
"We have found it difficult to get clarity on what was said and by whom," Hawthorn said in a club statement.
"However, both clubs agree that any comments made regarding a person's mental health issues are completely inappropriate and out of bounds on the footy field."

Sounds like the club has approached the team and either genuinely no one said anything and Selwood/Clark are lying or no one put their hand up to it and now Hawthorn is looking to get more details from Geelong on who said what.

If both clubs care as much as they say they do then the truth should be out about this pretty quickly.

Clark is understood to be disappointed the incident has become public and Cook confirmed he had been instructed by the player through football manager Steve Hocking that he did not want to pursue the matter nor seek mediation.

The above makes me think Clark complained after the game and has since cooled down and spoken to some people who may have said they didn't see whatever Lake said in the same light.

I was more thinking about the future when many of these ex-players suffer the come-down from being a footballer on top of the world to another average Joe.

Mental illness is a massive problem for ex-sportsmen of all types, manifesting itself in drug, alcohol and gambling problems. Stigmatising mental illness now may affect players further down the track.

To say we will support or own in the future if they put their hand up does no good if you're harming them now.
Should we establish a fund to cover any future medical expenses of these players?

Yes...reading the subtext in all this.... there appears to be some off field politics taking place between these two clubs in light of the 10 goal thrashing of Geelong...Clarke/Motlop (getting dobbed in by Hawks players) and the result..etc...I can't help but to think this....

We were on the end of a 5 year losing streak to the Cats...and all that came out of it was the Kennett Curse..imagine the sledging from the Geelong players that took place in that time...
