Is Hawthorn's depth pretty average? Reading a lot of people discounting Essendon's efforts because they were playing "box hill". If you take 4-5 players out, are Hawthorn really just an average side? Should I be really upset Essendon didn't win by 5 or 6 goals? Just confused is all.

That makes no sense? You are asking if our depth is average? We didn't have just any 5-6 players out of our best 22, we were missing our leader for half a game, multiple AA (and should be 2012 Brownlow medalist) in Sam Mitchell, Brian Lake - Norm Smith, Stratton 4th in B&F in premiership year and Brad Sewell who would have been more than handy out there last night due to missing midfielders for us. Take that quality out of any team and you don't win games of football unless you have a lot of talented depth players to call upon. Look at Sydney last year as an example.

You should be upset because a golden opportunity was missed by your mob...if you can't beat us in March with heaps of outs then you have no hope of doing it in September.

Yeah you're right, i mean we didn't have any players out.
Big names or not they make up a crucial part of our team.

Don't let your injuries get away from the fact we challenged you last night, and as it pains me to say it, it was a great loss.
And it may be a wakeup call for your own side.
Oh ok so Demspey and Winderlich were the reason you lost? More valuable than the outs we had obviously.

Dureya has one thing you can't train in a player and that's pure courage. I have faith that his skills & decision making -which aren't all that bad for such a young kid anyway- will improve with experience.

It impresses me no end watching such a slight young kid willing to go back with the flight of the ball so often.
He did turn it over a couple of times, but the kid does have a real crack.

Obviously Burger was our best last night but the highlight for me was just a tiny effort from Breust when he was on the deck and knocked the ball onto Hill who handballed onto Cyril for the winning goal. That ball could have easily get caught up but Breust had the smarts to keep it alive.

Yep.

What was really brilliant about it was that he deliberately hit it down into the ground so that it would bounce up perfectly for Hill. From the main angle, it's hard to make out, but from the alternate angle, you cane see exactly what he's doing. Superb play.

Can't believe it..... turned the TV on this morning and guess what I heard? "Thats the first time Paul Chapman has lost to the Hawks in 10 games"

Then this afternoon I turned on the Box Hill match at the start of the 3rd quarter..... and guess what, commentators gushing about Paul Chapman. What the hell is going on? It really has reached a sickening level.

Was thinking about the game this morning and im so proud of the boys never say die attitude last night, we were down and out last night and looked spent but the quality and courage of the players to keep clawing away and not give up is what i love about this club.

Summed up well, gutsy win, this group has a never say die belief that is going to hold us in good stead this year, great to see the young guns coming through

Burgertron has 87 games for us. 13 more for us and this may come true!!!
As of last night he's played 89 for us, so it will come true even sooner!

Do you think Essendon can get better? Carlisle/Daniher are both very inexperienced forwards. A full game from Ryder and getting Bellchambers back should address some of our clearance issues late in the game. Hawks fans - do you see a light at the end of the tunnel for the Dons? If not, why? (Alternatively just make some crack about Hird, peptides, cheating scum, chapman)

I think Essendon will get better. This is a new season with a new tactic that will take time to perfect, and it looked effective to me.

I think Duryea will play the majority of the season and I've already marked him down as Guerra's replacement. His decision making with ball in hand and kicking ability is actually quite good, but just needs to build up experience playing in defence. Capable of delivering some delightful left foot spearing passes over distance and hoofing the ball clear when required. He could develop into quite a weapon with his kicking once he gets some more attacking run in his game.

Some posters were concerned about Carlisle and Daniher.

Daniher no goals. Carlisle kicked two from two soft frees.
Reminds me
The games this year, so far, have become harder to win. It seems so many have improved since last season.I know that sounds strange, but it will be harder to win as many this year, as we did last year, does that make sense to you out there?
nah
22-0
3-0 in finals

Book it in!

Anyway, not here to argue. Enjoy your win, maybe without the unnecessary cheap shots[/quote]

Hawthorn beat the old Geeong coach!

Hawthorn beat old uncle Paulie!

Hawthorn got the "4pts" !

Very necessary shots IMHO. Cheap? The 4 premiership points are pricless!
