If we can somehow get over the Cats on Sunday then it might not end up being a top 10 pick or at best the 10th pick. Our run home is Geelong, Brisbane, North, GWS , Suns, West Coast. I think we ave a real shot at winning all those games maybe bar West Coast game. Snagging Whitfield will take more than 1 x first rounder anyways.

I'm generally a cautious optimist, but I don't see the Hawks going into any of those games as favourites bar the Suns. Not saying they won't go on a streak, but my gut feeling is an 11th-to-13th finish.

That’s contingent on Cogs wanting to sign up. If he’d prefer to go to Carlton or St Kilda I’d be insanely content with Lachie coming on board.

I understand free agency is a free hit from giving up assets - but if the free agent doesn’t want to come but we can trade for an even better player then I’m not going to be disappointed.

Yeah Browne knows nothing. Click bait artist

My take is that if Coniglio was genuinely still considering staying, he won’t now. They mismanaged this injury and their record with injuries is terrible. Given our record with knees including with his best mate, that has to be a factor. As does Clarkson and his record of improving nearly every player that walks in the door. Coniglio + Clarkson = potentially best player in the game.

West Coast the threat. He may reasonably want to return to his family and they are a great club. He’d be walking into a potential dynasty.

I’d be surprised if he went to Carlton. No coach. No proven record of improving players or of excellence. It would be a call for money. I don’t think he’s that type but who knows.

Coniglio is a better player than Whitfield and he's exactly what we need. Coniglio for free is just a must do.

My contact is still telling me we are not one bit confident he will be at the Hawks next season and are doing plenty of work in other areas. (Whitfield is the name I keep hearing)

Surely the Giants under no circumstance agree to trade Whitfield if Cogs leaves for free agency..... unless that is Lachie tells them I want to return to Victoria now and get me to the Hawks via a trade 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
How solid is your source?

Typically internally, clubs are confident when a player is headed over, even if it doesn’t eventuate (ie Shiel). Doesn’t bode well if internally we don’t even think it’s a shot.

Consistent with RnL mail last week.

Unfortunately it seems that way.

I know everyone is saying if he chooses Carlton then it is all about the money. I disagree, yes money would be a big part of it and much higher than what other clubs could offer but he would see that there is light at the end of the tunnel for Carlton. They have some great youth and no doubt Carlton are selling to Cogs that they have a huge future. Being in a successful side is what would drive Cogs going by all reports. If he sees playing with Cripps, Walsh, Dow, McKay, Curnow, Petrevski-Seton, Setterfield, Weitering etc as an exciting future then so be it. Who knows they may still stink it up for awhile and he gets it wrong but you can also mount a case that they should be doing a Brisbane Lions soon and skyrocket up once it all clicks. I can honestly understand if a player sees a brighter future with Carlton than with us. Most oppo fans think it. We don't agree with those thoughts obviously.

Although having no coach yet, showing little signs of improvement so far & having a terrible culture for the past 2 decades SHOULD play on his mind. I just don't think it is fair to label him money hungry if he chooses them. People can be great at selling and maybe he has bought into that.

I am also not basing him likely going to Carlton off of media rumours, moreso what RoughandLove said.

I agree with you that if he was to choose Carlton that it wouldn't be solely based on money but it could definitely be a tipping point especially if he is offered an extra 500-600k per season on what we offer. Both teams have players in their best 22 that are in or past their prime that will need to be replaced soon. As you will see below that both teams have their warts. With Coniglio's recent injury and injury history then you really have to ask yourself that the fact that we play the majority of our home games on the MCG rather than on the Marvel car park could very well push things in our favour if he decides to not resign.

HawthornAge in brackets
McEvoy (30y 0m)
Stratton (30y 4m)
Birchall (31y 5m)

Casboult (29y 3m)
Murphy (31y 11m)
E. Curnow (29y 8m)

Note: I've included players that will be 30 years old at the start of next season and still in the best 22.

I was told ages ago we had started planning for alternatives.

The name I have heard multiple times was Whitfield.

I know everyone will tell me Cogs is a free hit etc etc but he is not a free hit if he is costing you 1.2-1.4 a year.

He is a massive hit!!!!

Anyway fwiw I would love Cogs at Hawks but not prepared to pay him 1.2 a year sort of money. He is a 750-900k per year type of player in my opinion if he agrees to choose us.

Has RnL explicitly stated which club he's likely to go to? All I recall is RnL stating that he won't be at GWS next year. Very open-ended post...

LMR stating his source saying Hawks are not in it. So at least he's outlining something more definitive.

Won't know until it's announced officially and if he's not playing for the rest of the season then he should announce it sooner rather than later so we can move on.

Whitfield it is...

Easy to say you'd turn your back on 1.4m a year when it's not you having to do it.

If we offered him 4 x 1 mil and Carlton offered him 5-6 x 1.4 he's walking away from over $3million by coming to us.

It's easy to get sold that the Blues are have a good young core again, yeah you can point to Clarko and other things but you aren't in the room getting sold and you're looking at if as a Haws supporter.

Carlton aren't without appeal for Cogs - $1.4M salary/highly talented list/Andrew Russell.

However, Hawthorn are a KNOWN quantity. At the back of a player's mind they must know success lies at the feet of the HFC and 4 x premiership Coach, Alistair Clarkson. Moreover, our re-build will be 75% complete post 2019 draft, Dingley is a couple of years away and Jaeger must hold massive appeal on top of the above factors.

If he chooses anyone external to GWS or Hawthorn, someone is selling him some stepped on shite.

Forgot about Russell, he's another tick for them, SOS could be also as far as a connection to the club.
