With the need to use x amount of first round draft pick over a certain amount of time, say one club is failing too meet the criteria, could they do a back hand deal with another club for them to nominate an academy or father son player early to manufacture a first round pick through matching? Would they count that as a first round pick used?

I thought the idea was the AFL just won’t let you trade it out so you have to use it. But I guess you could try doing what you say a year earlier before they stop you trading it out in the final year of the 4 year block. Then you can carry on trading first round picks for another 3 years...

*or you can just apply for an exemption and they will let you trade it out anyway.

I understand the reasoning for Patton, he is a good key forward who is a lump of a bloke with obvious talent but a wretched injury history. When he comes to Hawthorn, he’s coming to play a role and nothing more, he is not the saviour but more like an added piece who can supplement and take pressure off Mitch Lewis.

Mitch is the young bull with the most upside, he has every opportunity to become a 50 a year goal kicker for the next decade.

Once we get Cogs and Patton as well as Finn as a F/S then we are set both through the middle and up forward, particularly if Ollie continues to develop.

Our strategy must be to then shore key defensive slots, Chip is literally a migraine or injury away from missing footy/possibly retiring and Kosi isn’t yet ready and KB has proven to be more **** on a bill than **** on a cow.

We also can’t forget the importance Clarko places on outside footy, we are ageing in that area. Whilst Scully has 4-5 years left, guys like Hendo/Izzie are short term, we must find the next gen of outside runners.

There's still our 2019 1st, 2020 1st & perhaps guys like Smitty (linked to Melb, Coll & Foots) & Cegs (GWS?).

Cogs is the big ticket item, but (IMO) we're going to want at least another Top 10 mid to come with Finn Maginness & probs even package for another one.

Clubs have to adapt to free agency and be smarter about it. If Whitfield says he wants to come to us then our first round pick this year and whatever other pick/player we’d have to pay out is better than the compensation pick they’d get next year.

If Cogs goes and they know Whitfield wants to come home then they may as well start the rebuild with 3 first round picks this year (current pick, compo pick for Cogs and our first).

I agree clubs need to be smarter but this is the AFL we're talking about, I can say with near certainty that if Cogs leaves as a FA that GWS won't trade Lachie for Pick 8 + scraps in the same off season.

Unless GWS see it as a better deal than LW leaving for nothing other than AFL compo pick the following year. They just might cash in early. Pick and a player now or compo later.

Of course pick 8 and scraps is a better deal than the compo they'd receive, but I just think if Cogs leaves as a FA they'll be stubborn and will make a stand that they don't want to lose 2 of their best 4 players in the same off season. Just my hunch that's all, I wish Compensation was just scrapped all together, then it really might force clubs hands if they thought they stood to lose quality free agents for absolute zilch.

I don't think compensation will be scrapped as it would rob AFL of the chance to manipulate things.

Imagine if compo didn't exist - players would just keep on walking out of **** clubs & the AFL would have no mechanism for propping up said **** club. At least now they can manipulate the system such that we get Pick 19 for losing Buddy, yet Melbourne gets about Pick 3 for losing Frawley.

If we end up getting Coniglio as a free agent, Mitchell back from injury, secure that top 10 draft pick which is likely to be used on the best available midfielder, get Maguinness as a F/S pick, then that’s essentially four midfielders added in the best 22 going into next year.

This will likely see the contested possession, clearance, tackle and inside 50 count go up significantly next year.

For our draft pick, if he's available we'll go for Caleb Serong. I'd bet my house on it.

Will start off as a dynamic forward and push into the midfield as he develops.

If our pick is a bit later, Jack Mahony is a very Hawthorn player.

That’s a player who I wouldn’t mind!

At 177cm, we're almost certain to take him...

Compo encourages clubs to let players go. Forget gws, Frawley was pushed out so Melbourne could get a better pick for him than they would have in a trade.

Wowser if there was one player in the league I could see Clarko salivating over with the chance to improve his game and develop him would be Sam Powell Pepper.

I saw that link on a questionable Facebook trade rumour page.

Anything official through your connects?

I agree. I just can't see the AFL allowing all of Cogs, Whitfield and Patton walk at once. And to Hawthorn of all places. Watch this space.

fu** I've been blessed by choosing this club and to the 4 year old at my kindergarten who wore a stunningly good Brown and Gold football jumper to my kindergarten and I told my mum I want a brown and gold football jumper now I barrack for them... I truly thank you whoever you are/were. (No one in my family or greater family was Hawthorn that kid if I could ever find him I will buy a slab... minimum) I'm pretty sure he ended up at a different primary school. But hell he did me a favour.
Yeah, that was me. I'll PM you where to send the slab. ;)

Trading with Port usually pays big dividends for us - but **** me if it is rly costly. If Whitfield is indeed the target this off season I doubt we’d have the assets for both unless Port really want SPP gone.
