Patton is free hit really and a no brainer at a 3rd or 4th round draft pick.
It’ll be interesting to see what impact he has on Coniglio’s decision to come IF we get him. I get the feeling we’ve been using Patton to our advantage given his situation this year... considering he’s known all year that he will be a Hawk in 2020

Saints have offered big $800+ to Hill.

He knows we won’t consider matching that and what our pay structure is.

If he decides he wants to rejoin the Hawks it will be on our terms, salary wise.

Obviously Hawthorn think they can rectify his injury concerns and get something out of him - we've done it so many times before, I hardly think it'll turn into a 'disaster' considering what we're reportedly giving up for him.

Sorry Butt the lads got the turning circle of a 18 wheeler and can't jump .
The speed of the current game will drive him crazy.
Sorry to be negative......

Can you suggest which other cheap tall forward who has had 40 goal seasons in the past we should sign then?

Yes ....LEWIS at pick 76 wasn't It.
I would personally prefer a Kid who's hundred percent healthy and doesn't have the turning circle of 18 wheeler.
The modern game is full of Speed no room for turtles.

Ben Brown goes ok ..... and he has NO turning circle

Cannot see him knocking back up to $200 grand a year just to come back unfortunately

Shame, he’s such a gun wingman

1x key position forward only?

Imagine we had 2x?

Bro we already got Lewis and he hasn’t kicked 40 goals in a season
Because he hasn't played a whole season.

Next year the only thing stopping him from kicking 40+ is patton.

I am in the give it a go camp for cheap but doubt he will be able to contribute much. Max Bailey type management cant be done now with no sub and reduced interchange.

The objective isn't for Lewis to kick 40 goals in a season - it is for Hawthorn to win games/Premierships.

Having a genuine KPF playing out of FF increases the likelihood of that (with Lewis at CHF).

Sure, it may stop Lewis from kicking 40+ goals, but it will create opportunities for Wingard, Breust & Gunston to get free (oppo teams will have to double-team Patton) or at worst, give them lesser defenders to play on. That will increase our scoring by a far greater margin than we're likely to lose by Lewis only kicking 20+ goals for the season (instead of 40+).

Not anything against this post, just a general observation. Why do are we judging Lewis on kicking 40 goals or not? Surely with the recent trend of CHF playing more up the ground and kicking less goals people can see the bigger picture to what Lewis can offer us. He really is a natural footballer.

Agreed.

I think playing him at CHF is going to be a lot better for us in what he does for our ball movement & structure, than sitting him at FF & having him kick XX goals per year.

Forward structure & team scoring is the currency of today's football & a guy like Patton can do that for our side, playing out of FF. IMO, there's very few players in the league that can play CHF well & I think Lewis is one of them. That's worth more than 2x goals a week (IMO) in what it does for our forwardline as a whole.

If the talk of peter wright has any weight, 100% I’d be taking him over Patton. But with wright only just signing an extension a few months ago, I reckon it’ll be too hard to pry him out of gc, and we know how much Of a dick Cochrane would be about it

Patton allows Mitch to develop without getting double teamed, Patton takes a key defender and allows Mitch to do his thing.. than in itself is worth his recruitment, if you can’t understand that then you have an issue understanding modern footy.

If you are worried about contracted players coming to Hawthorn just because they are contracted, remember that McEvoy was contracted & about to hit his prime.
Funny enough 2MP would be almost an identical target for a very similar position.

For all the trades & free agent deals that Hawthorn have done, when there is a significant opportunity to make a deal for a player like Lake, McEvoy, Chip, Gunston, Wingard, Mitchell, Jags.... we just get it done.

#pattonisthetarget , 2MP & a free hit at Cogs absolutely changes our structure for the better under a 6-6-6.
I have said before that the rule will bring back the dinosaur FF & if those to big men arrive & we have an ridiculously good midfield of Mitch, Cogs, Worpell, Jags, Wingard.... that will be silver spoon delivery to a stacked forward line.

Big guys don’t get smaller late in games.

Have no qualms with the club going after Patton. I’ve always read it as a positive sign in the bid for Coniglio.

Patton might not be what everyone once thought he’d become, but he is a talented and pretty young player (in a position we’re shallow) with a professional attitude coming from a good club for practically nothing.

Imagine if Mitch Lewis got a long term injury, and we were competing in finals. Patton will be more than handy.

As for Peter Wright, I think he would be the first player to leave the same year he signed a contract. Surely we’d avoid on the moron policy, if it’s actually true.
