If we can add one key defender and one key forward during the delisted free agency or rookie draft then we are set for next year and we’ll be right in the mix for the 2019 Premiership.

I like it when posters just cut to the chase. Not sure it's that simple, but I do appreciate looking at things this way.

On what bases? I guess Collingwood were also a better team than Richmond by that logic.

I'd say missing Stratton, JOM, unfit Sicily and McEvoy, injuries to Mitchell, Silk and Bruest were reason we didn't perform to home and away standards.
Straight sets.

I also thought a lot of our home & away for was pretty average apart from a few good wins at the start and end of the minor round.

FFS Burton excited me to until I realised he couldn’t run 500 metres before being gassed for ten mins.

Then Sicily taking over his role we got excited about but x 10 better.

Then having him help us get Wingard who is a freaking superstar.

Are people brain dead or am I missing something?

We need two great KP players and another elite mid and we will win another host of flags.

With no picks and losing Hodge, Mitchell, Lake, Rioli, Hill, Lewis, Gibbo, Buddy, Birchall (Sicily and Howe for the pointy end) and we finish top 4 FFS. Then we add Wingard who is a superstar, Scully and Scrimshaw

Clarko extends his contract. Mitchell comes back after winning WC a flag no one imagines. And I’m reading all this.

FFS people are dumb arses.

Yeah these are about the 3 players I think we are shy from being elite. Hopefully Coniglio is the elite mid but I'm not sure how we come up with the 2 KPP.

I have some news to share that could upset a few again just like the Burton news I shared a few weeks back.

I am not sure what the right thing to do is or how to share it so it doesn’t upset some.
Just share it as some of us have our own BS filter, if it upsets some well each to their own, personally I don't even know why some must get into the my info is better than your info shitfight all the time. At the end of the day if your info is correct then it will stand alone without anyone's rewritten history.
If we could all just post info without the chest beating what a utopia BF would be.:thumbsu:

I respect the optimism of some posters suggesting we can pick up a decent KPP or two from the DFAs however I suspect we will need to trade or use free agency to achieve that.

We are still building towards a premiership tilt but in my view need another couple of years to complete the rebuild which most of us believe requires another mid and two KPPs.

In the interim we should still be very competitive aided by the best coaching panel in the AFL.

With or without some defenders from the DFA pool......it's worth remembering that Hawthorn were the 3rd least scored against side in the comp.

If we can keep that sort of team defense going we can challenge for the top 4 once again.

We keep talking about this 'perfect list' that will see us winning premierships but how many squads actually have that list?

Richmond and West Coast are the only two sides with enviable KPP talent at the moment and they won't last forever.

You mean like when they say Shiels and Stratton have had poor and average seasons? Despite Shiels having, statistically, his second best season ever and Stratton, his 3rd best season? ;)

We were the 3rd least scored against, most difficult to transition ball against, conceded the least inside 50s and the least rebound 50s. We also conceded the least metres gained of any team during the H&A season.

We did all that even with arguably the best f50 pressure player the game has ever seen retiring mid year.

Unfortunately the style in which we play the game allows whatever entries we do concede to be somewhat clean, which in turn makes our defenders look a bit worse than they actually are.

Yes I totally agree. We were getting scored against mainly from the rebound from out of our forward line due to us not being able to lock it in and get a score ourselves. We clear as day need a KPF more than a KPB and if your team defence is solid and in unison you can get by without a KPB. In regards to our forward structure going into the upcoming season you’d think we’ll be going with something similar to what Richmond have been doing with Reiwolt surrounded by the small pressure forwards.

I think history shows it’s easier to get a DFA backman than it is a forward. Unfortunately I just think we’ll have to settle for Schoey to step up at least for 2019 anyways.

There's a lot of promise in the natural progression Mitch Lewis has been showing. This should be the year where he takes the next step into regular seniors football, as he would have won the Frosty Miller Medal if he played every game in the VFL.

Insofar as backmen go, the form of Brand and O'Brien in the finals of the VFL showed that we have players who are more than capable of stepping up. I know no one particularly likes the idea of O'Brien being back in the side but his form was similar to Liam Jones when he moved back and showed himself more than capable of performing. He has pace, he can take a mark and his levers are relatively long - he deserves a new beginning as a defender IMO.

One of the biggest myths is that you need the best list going around to win a flag.

We don't have the best list in terms of talent or structure. There are sides with clearly better lists - Giants, Dees, Tigers for starters.

But West Coast (or Collingwood) did not have the best list in 2018. Bulldogs did not have the best list in 2016. You need a list that is good enough in talent and structure to compete with every side and then more important is game plan and discipline (and luck with injury).

We have the best coach in the country (probably ever) and we were competitive against every side in 2018. We have since added two A graders and from our most recent final, add O'Meara and Mitchell without a ruptured AC joint (he dominated that game before the injury). Don't reckon Gunston kicks like that in a final again either.

We are not that far off and our finals campaign, while disappointing, did not reflect our capability. We had key players who just played poorly.

Tom Sheridan delisted by Fremantle. We were interested in his draft year (albeit 7 years ago).

Elite runner, plays multiple positions, could play better football moving back to Victoria.

Not the worst option out there. What we need to consider is this:

1. Are there any delisted players who could be best 22? Obvious gaps are a key defender or key forward. Not sure there are any delisted players or state league players who can fill these voids.

2. Which players who have been delisted can contribute more than Whitecross, Lovell, Mirra, TOB as depth? Are they young enough to bother?

3. What is likely to be available at pick 100 or in the rookie draft and are there any better options in the DFA market?

It'd be difficult to de-Ross any player that comes out of Freo, particularly 7 years on. I think we've loaded up enough in that age range now anyway. We'd be looking at the 22-24, not the 24-27.

That's exactly why I think we went so hard for Wingard and why I think he is a great get for us . Our ability to score was generally our major issue last season especially in both finals where at times we controlled and dominated play but got minimal reward.
