People are missing the point on the scully deal- it is not just a trade just for a pick, it is a trade for salary cap space as well.

Wood came out and said the Afl would endorse trades based around salary cap as well this year. It is a new paradigm that the footy landscape exists in.

Sydney traded out Hannebery to drop 11 places in the draft! It’s a salary dump. Trades are not just going to be solely about picks or players anymore, necessarily. Salary cap has become a criteria and it is worth something to clubs and will formulate part of the value for certain deals.

My feeling towards the Wingard trade are starting to change.

if we get Scully and Scrimshaw as cheap as what has been mentioned, I am more then happy to keep Burto and our first round pick if that's what Wingard will cost.

Get a quality kid in with pick 15 and focus our attention/cap space on next years free agency class (May/Congnilio/Wingard).

We need some more quality in the forward line though.

I was leaning towards the side you have taken before the weekend but completely backflipped. Wingard is elite and we would be banking on burton and pick 15 to try and get to that level but may only become good players.

Let's be honest besides half back burton hasn't shown any ability to play another role at a high level and playing that loose half back role can be filled easier then others . If reported wingard is coming on $650 k a year and Scully $500k that will still give the club some money to play with next year , considering roughy, burgoyne, puopolo will be likely off the books.

100%

And this, in theory, is how free agency should be working. Not compensation picks.

"Number 1 pick is non negotiable, you can't trade it"

Since 2000 - the only #1 picks that have been out and out stars are Riewoldt, Hodge, Deledio and only Riewoldt has been the consensus best player in their draft. Whitfield and Rayner have potential.

If Carlton traded 1 for 2 x top 10 picks or 3 x first rounders, they'd be big winners. You'd go from 1 chance of hitting it rich to 2 or 3, absolute no brainer.

2000 Nick Riewoldt
2001 Luke Hodge
2002 Brendon Goddard
2003 Adam Cooney
2004 Brett Deledio
2005 Marc Murphy
2006 Bryce Gibbs
2007 Matthew Kreuzer
2008 Jack Watts
2009 Tom Scully
2010 David Swallow
2011 Jonathon Patton
2012 Lachie Whitfield
2013 Tom Boyd
2014 Paddy McCartin
2015 Jacob Weitering
2016 Andrew McGrath
2017 Cameron Rayner
