Hawthorn - four peat?

No. They won't be the outright greatest team. The Collingwood team from 1925-1930, was the greatest team of all time. The only team that could mount a case against that would be the Melbourne side in the 1950s. Both Collingwood and Melbourne in their prime eras were simply unstoppable.

Of course you were there & saw it all.

I think in this scenario its down to two, 4 in a row is a unique feat lets face it, if the hawks match it in a bigger national modern comp, then I think they are the best, if they aren't already.

September next year:

Burgoyne is 32.
Mitchell is 32.
Hodge is 32.
Lake is 34.
Lewis is 30.
Gibson is 32.
Roughead is 29.
Hale is 32 (if he doesn't retire).

Wouldn't be surprised to see a number of those guys slow down a bit or cop some injuries.

West Coast, Port Adelaide, GWS and Freo will be up there next year, I reckon. Sydney, Richmond and Adelaide may be too.

It will be bloody tough.
Please they just traveled to Perth twice and played all four weeks of finals.

Huge chance. Be interesting to see if Port can return to their best as I reckon they're possibly the only hope of stopping it.
If they trade in the players they need and get rid of spuds like Mitchell and a few others then they have a real chance. Having white and polec back to somewhere near their best will be a huge plus as well. Hawthornnshould technically decline as they get older but maybe their whole team is taking whatever boomer is taking.

The game has never been harder to play, and more demanding on the participants, than it is currently. To win 4 flags in a row in the modern game would far outweigh 4 in a row when it was an amateur sport played by blokes with full time jobs for a bit of fun at weekends. The hawks look every chance to do it in 2016 too, their best is still streets ahead of the rest, and nobody performs better on the biggest stage than the hawks. Their biggest problem in 2016 will be surviving the rigours of another h&a season and qualifying in the top 4 with a list that will see a number of prime movers 28 and older - all being even they will do so tho, and be warm faves to go 4 in a row

No they won't. Collingwood's 4 straight and Melbourne's 5/6 would still be in the discussion, and probably ahead.

Not sure why everyone is so desperate to shit on the past.

Gotta disagree.

Hawthorn have done it in an 18 team competition, in the most equalized era of the AFL.

They are the GOAT if they win it again in 2016.

The Hawks will probably win again against year...or come close.
If it ain't broke, why fix it..

All they have to do is recruit well in the draft again and keep the same team fit and ready etc...

They are better than the Ess, Geel, Bris, teams of the past in my opinion..

It's easy to say it is harder to back up now. Yes there are more teams and game plans are quickly dissected. Player movement is also restricted. A club can't just go and recruit 5 players and make a big jump and there are no unknown superstars in the bush ready to make a huge immediate impact. It takes time to draft and develop players. It's hard to compare across eras. I'm not even sure who to rank first out of Brisbane, Geelong and Hawthorn from this century.

If Hawthorn win in 2016 they will certainly have claims to just about whatever title they want to claim. It's all completely subjective though.

Fourthorn

Fourpeat is stupid

If we win it in 2016 = Fivethorn

It depends how you describe the greatest though.
Most teams now, maybe even all of them would beat the collingwood team of that era.
If you're talking about dominance of the comp, then it is certainly the pies, but they were definitely not the best to have played.

About half as many teams in the competition and no travel for starters.

Hey look who's woken up from his slumber haven't heard much of you since Saturday where you been Sir Trollsalot? We've missed your unbiased insight!

Many players are fine one year cooked the next, a lot of young families amongst the team will add to the stress, it will be interesting to see if the drive for 4 in a row overrides the drudgery of pre season and the aches and pains of aging limbs.

Why do you have Essendon and Geelong in the list, they have never won 3 in a row yet alone 4, currently only Brisbane of the modern era have matched the Hawks?

Yeah I got a bit sick of the typical Hawthorn arrogance going on. Took a break. Still think that this is one of the weakest eras in AFL history. The Hawthorn "dynasty" is definately the worst out of Geelong and Brisbane.
