Hawthorn - four peat?

If that's what your basing your confidence on I wouldn't get your hopes up.

In that game you kicked 11 straight in the first half time, your accuracy hasn't come close to the since.

Dangerfield had 46, very unlikely he plays that way again.

Since that game Hawthorn have clearly found better form, Geelong not so much. Since round 6 we have had both the second best attack and defense while Geelong are ranked 7th for both

All of this and we were still infront at 3 quarter time and missed 3 easy shots at the start of the last. The scoring shots were even that day.

You have a very poor finals record in recent years and only a week ago half your supporter base had written you off. I wouldn't be that confident.

Game, set and match. Mission Accomplished :drunk:

Are you simple?

Have a look at the ladder.

We know you are.

Simple one actually. Hawthorn is 2 games clear on top of the ladder, without their CHF (who is also their VC) conducting a rebuild on the run, chasing their 5th Grand Final and 4th flag on the spin. Do you remember the challenges faced by Geelong in their hilarious attempts to defend their 2007  , 2009 and 2011 premierships?

Meanwhile Geelong are struggling with the weight of being 2nd favourite for the flag, having not won a final for 4 years although they do have their tails up having dispatched of Adelaide on a suburban dung heap that shouldn't be commissioned for AFL use. Arent you due for another mid game capitulation anyway. My favourite was the way Sydney smacked you down on your home deck 3 weeks ago :)

You do this says more about the level of competition than about hawthorn? Without the league focusing on making it easier for teams to dominate over a long period of time this wouldn't have happened.

Just like 2008 right

That Hawthorn team, it must be said, had several significance diffiencies

you play in launceston and are knocking geelongs ground?

We are right in the mix for a 4th, in saying that, there is still alot of footy to be played between now and then. I think this season has shown that there is at least 4-5 sides that can win the flag right now. Geelong, Swans, GWS, Crows. I'll take a stand against WC right now, I don't think they have shown enough so far this season to be in that window. Exciting times ahead.

Short term, and on the surface, the 'Fouthorn' doesn't look good for the AFL and the sport. It's 'boring' and monotonous and frustrating for other clubs' supporters and makes the concept of 'equalisation' look momentarily silly.
Longer term, I think it's actually a good thing, given the reverence with which the 'great teams' are held. It becomes a part of the rich and colourful history and folklore of the sport, and in the future people will hearken back to these current days and say 'wow, do you remember that great Hawk team, and master coach Clarkson, of the late 2000s-mid 2010s? Weren't they amazing?', just like we do with the Lions of 01-04, the Hawks of the early 70s-early 90s, Dees of the 50s and 60s, Pies of the 20s and 30s etc etc......

I don't know why but even though the Hawks have won 3 straight and looking a reasonable chance for a 4th, they just don't hold the same awe for me as say the Lions did in the early 00s or even Geelong of recent times.
Do you remember 80s Hawks?

as for the current team, Clarkson looms over everything. On Sunday for three quarters they just went through the motions, then sprung the trap in the last. win never in doubt.

The lions had got bashed up by this point in the cycle. Clarksons call-it-whatever-you want is slowly flexing.

Don't discount Ratten as well, theres elements of his structures when carlton won games with no mature kpp to speak of

I suspect that's true for many footy fans.

The Hawks are clinically, not physically, dominant. They play 'unsociable' football, of course, but they don't beat sides with a beating.

Where Brisbane and Geelong would win with physical dominance in an up-the-guts style, the Hawks win with sublime skilfulness. Maybe less awe inspiring but no less awesome.

People also think Geelong and Brisbane had it tougher with opposition that Hawthorn, there is this idea that the MCG + interstate opponents + 18 clubs means anyone half decent could win three in a row even though nobody else seems to be able to be half decent for more than a year.

Brisbane won three flags but were not the dominant home and away team over the period, first there was Essendon then Port Adelaide, Brisbane were the best September team in their era and good enough to make sure they were there in September for four years.

Hawthorn are more like that than Geelong who were dominant home and away like Port but have not always played their best footy in September hence the 3 flags in 5 years without a b2b

How many teams can lose 2 elite Coleman medalists in the last 3 years and still be two games clear on top?

Ranked 3rd in the league in points scored despite missing our center half forward and full forward from last years Grand Final who are out for the year.

We've had to make do with a small back-line and forward-line that's done an outstanding job to this point. Our small line-up suits our style of play at the MCG.

Gunston 41 goals (2.4)
Breust 35 goals (2.1)
Rioli 34 goals (2.3)
Puopolo 29 goals (1.7)
Sicily 26 goals (1.5)
O'Brien 11 goals (1)

We are far better placed than I could possibly have hoped. Since I have little interest in arguing over who would beat whom in a final with the types of Cats posters who refer to our respective spoon counts to make their point, and those seem to be the only types of Cats posters here, I'll leave it at that.
