Please don’t bring Barrett’s sliding doors rubbish here. That’s not the Hawthorn footy club in the media.

That’s a desperate article, trying to get clicks every week.

Shaun Rehn worth a mention. His best at Adelaide but the dud help a fairly challenged hawks team to a prelim in 2001
From memory Rehn had had a couple of knee recos by the time he got to the Hawks but was still able to use his experience and technique to perform at an adequate level in spite of his diminished athleticism.
At Adelaide he was a star

If memory serves me right, Grant Thomas, when he was coaching the Saints, said something along the lines of ruckmen not being important.

A falser word has never been uttered, at least as far as Australian Rules Football is concerned.

Many pundits or ex-coaches have said this. Pretty sure Matthews said something similar.

Look at the ruckmen in teams since the turn of the century - they were mostly battlers that could take chop-out marks and compete around the ground.

i wish we had access to advanced stats. would be interesting to see the % of scores generated from centre clearances from the past few seasons compared to pre-6-6-6 rules.

Hawks v Melbourne 1996 on Fox footy right now. Fantastic to see all the Hawk Heroes of yesterday and Alistair Clarkson playing for Melbourne. Not the game @ VFL park but at MCG. Some great highlights.

I would both agree and disagree.

Quite often, (in fact, most of the time) the ruckmen are there just to nullify each other, both at each individual contest, and over the course of the game. I tend to think of rucks as 'that big guy you need to run into the other big guy'

But if you don't have one, who can at least nullify the other (remember when ALL our rucks were down?) you're in deep shit, as the other guy has carte-blanche to put the ball to first use of his team.

A truly elite ruck, who manages to still give his team the advantage when competing with another AFL-level ruck, is worth his weight in gold.

I'm hoping Reeves can be this; he is a fair way down the track purely down to his height, and will hopefully keep advancing skill and strength wise to the his late 20s and 30s

I am 77 and have seen a lot of ruckmen in that time. Some that spring to mind who dominated in their eras include Nichols, Farmer, Simon Madden, Dempsey, Cox and Gawn. Salmon in fact played full forward at Essendon because he was good enough and Madden was first choice ruck.
I probably have overlooked some good ruckmen that deserve mention.
However if I had to nominate the best I have seen it would probably be the great Polly Farmer who revolutionised the game with his unmatched hand balling…

The biggest change in the game that I have noticed in my time is the physical size of the players.

What I have always struggled with when picking the greatest ruckman of all time is the physical size of the past players.

Would have Polly or Big Nic even been played in the ruck if they had to ruck against 210cm plus players?

Will Day will probably finish his career physically bigger than the games greatest ruckman and due to his size and just playing in the midfield some people seem to fear for his safety.

Yes agree, and that's why Gawn is so incredibly valuable to the Dees.

In essence they get both one of the best tap ruckmen in the leauge AND a player who has the ability to get 25+ possessions, 8 marks and kick multiple goals on occasion.

It's like they are playing with 19 players every time Gawn is on the field.

And that's why the truely great rucks like Gawn, Cox and prime Grundy are absolute gold.

But next best is rucks like Nankervis, Big Boy, Mumford, etc. Physical beasts who can still contribute around the ground.

Was that the year of the merger ?
Yes the proposed merger that was called the merger game. We needed to win to make the finals and dunstall kicked 10 including his 100th. We hung on and my mate and I got tickets and drove up to Sydney to watch us play the swans when 1st played 8th. We actually were unlucky to lose. Salmon had a phenomenal year finished 4th in the Brownlow.

It’s the only time I ever got to be on the hallowed MCG turf.😉

Yes, you can see big signs saying "No Merger".

Great game, went down to the wire.

Fantastic to see Dunstall kicked his 100th goal for the season in this match (10 in total).

The ruck work of Paul Salmon, tapping to a running Shane Crawford who kicks perfectly to a leading Jason Dunstall, pure magic to watch.

Oh and get Roughie back to Hawthorn!!

Roughie...

Come Here Dr Evil GIF

The merger match was my first ever game of live football. I was 6 years old.

Travelled down with Mum and Nan.
My Dad had told us not to bother buying tickets beforehand because the crowd would be lucky to crack 10 000. Then all the merger stuff happened and we needed to win to make finals. I think the tally ended up being about 60 000 or a bit more.

I always thought Roughie would end up making a good player agent but I’m not sure about his recruiting skills. How good would it be bringing him in as a forwards coach to mentor Lewis + Chol.
He was the fwds coach at the saints for a while. Not sure it worked that well tbh. I think he's always favoured the list management side of things.

On the article I thought it was a belter for us .
Just the right amount of minimal research , getting the lineup wrong and having Robbo/equivalent telling you what to write .
Tom Mitchell was stiff to not make our 'best' 22 .

Looking forward to the annual * to make finals , possible top 4/ Jack Stringer best pre season ever - win brownlow edition

This was the last time i went to footy game with my parents and sister. My mum is a Melbourne supporter. She refused to come to the game unless we sat with Melbourne section of supporters.

I sat there the whole game with Melbourne supporters bagging out piggy. How he was old. Hope he would play out the game and other assorted bullshit. It was an exciting game with the perfect finish and win and langers after the game it was highly emotional game. My sister had bought me a Hawthorn winter jacket a couple of weeks earlier. I still wear that jacket to every box hill and hawthorn game. It reminds me how close we came to losing our great club. I will never forget that game at Waverley
