Eddie Betts and his family got kicked out of a pool because some white kid was uncomfortable with their presence.

Whether you think that's systemic racism or not, just take in how messed up that is for a moment and imagine how he and others that go through that feel.

That's just plain weird, most kids would be hanging around Betts wanting his attention.

Only last year the ABC were involved in a $600k payout. They are not perfect.

This one would be millions.

The ABC accurately represented allegations that it presented as allegations.

You don’t know anything about defamation, along with dozens of others who apparently think you can sue when media reports 3 people calling a high profile person a garbage human, which was obviously reportable (especially having put questions to the people involved.)

How do you even approach this from a metric perspective?

For me 1% is 1% too much, but we have only heard 3 stories, there are many more. We have to get our head around what the * went on at Hawthorn and we really need to unpack what has gone on at every club.

True.

The timing really is awful for North (and to a lesser extent Brisbane) so close to rhe trade period and this investigation will take several weeks, i would assume

It's hard to see how total exoneration can happen, both clubs probably have to start making contingency plans to find a new coach (Essendon apparently very close to naming their own guy. And it doesn't seem it will be Hird either)

That is so F'd.

Someone is going to say we have to wait for the old white couple's side of the story before we pass judgement.

I dont think anyone reasonable is saying that.

Its also reasonable to say while people have the right to pass judgement before there has been a proper investigation, other people who believe in the importance of fact and critical thinking (which is an issue that has nothing to do with race at all) would view that that rush to judgement is the wrong thing to do and says negative things about those people and their attitudes (and their lack of critical thinking).

I remember Eddie Maguire talking about Heath Shaw, Alan Didak and their scaly mates that they needed to cut ties with after getting into some off field strife.

Leigh Matthews asking his players to abstain or use protection in December / January to avoid missing finals like Daniel Bradshaw.
Theres lines and boundaries

I think clubs are well within their rights to suggest to players about their extra-curricular activities and company they keep. Or to think about the timing of pregnancies.

Taking a sim card from someone, moving them out, suggesting termination of relationships and births, and manipulation of the response to that is pretty deplorable

You know there's a massive difference between both of those things you've mentioned and what's being alleged, right?

So sickening, and so very, very sad.

Above all else this speaks to two things - how ingrained prejudice really is, and how some who inhabit the bubble that is a professional sporting competition have such an overblown and outsized perception of the importance of said sporting competition in the wider context of the world and life.

On a side note I think one sided disclosure needs to stop, not just in football.

Too many innocent lives across numerous areas of society have been destroyed by accusations which were later disproved. The strictest of confidentiality should be legally enforceable until all parties have been given their rights of due process before any public disclosure is made. The alleged 'victims' are protected by anonymity whilst the accused are publicly named, how is that a fair process?

That's different to telling a player to get his partner to terminate a pregnancy and telling a player to ghost a partner by changing their number.

So current AFL commissioner Andrew Newbold, who was Hawthorn's President from 2012-2016, will be assisting the Independent External Investigation.
Talk about piss poor appearances at best and straight out corrupting the Independent External Investigation at worst.
compromise not corrupt.

And you know this how? How did Betts know this was the reason? This happened a year ago, how many times has he spoken up on racism in the AFL since then? Not once did he mention "I got kicked out of a pool because of my race?" Really strange how that didn't come up. He's big on calling out anonymous people on twitter, random people out of the crowd at the footy, but has no interest in doing so against this pool?

Which makes things really awkward as that means going through the entire trade period with Clarkson's methodology, Clarkson trying to attract players with the players also knowing there is a good chance he won't be there a few weeks later.

In a football list management sense thats true.

wtf-what-the-*.gif

Because he just said it. Or is he lying?

Just because it wasn't a public story at the time he's making it up, what sort of bush logic is that.

Its systematic if the management of the pool tell all blacks to move on.

Its not systematic if the idiot lifeguard they employed sometimes makes that call.

It’s systematic if they only employ racist lifeguards.

That’s not what systemic racism is, but also nobody is putting the pool anecdote forward as a specific example divorced from his broader comment which WAS specifically about systemic racism.

Why would he, so heroes like you can tell him he's not dealing with it in the right way?
