I've always assumed the remarkable decline of Hawthorn seniors in 1962 was by and large not their own fault but simply due to the rich, well-supported clubs of Essendon, Geelong and Carlton buying so many top players whom Hawthorn had no hope of affording. That the Hawks' reserves team was covered must reflect that even after two losses in three games Hawthorn were expected to rebound later, which apart from their win over Essendon (which for a long time looked like being Essendon's solitary loss for the season) on a very heavy Glenferrie Oval in Round Eight they utterly failed to do.

Look at those Hawks names!!!
Hawks kicked 9g 6b 1st q - 10g 4b 2nd q - 14g 2b 3rd q and 12g 2b in the last
and Sydney kicked 2g 6b in last qtr
so in the 3rd q 23 scoring shots between both teams and the final q - total of 22 scoring shots. Unbelievable:thumbsu:
Is this what Gill wants in the AFLW???

Rod Lester-Smith, who was the chief goalkicker, kicked only 23 goals in his 70 senior games, but did kick six in one game against Melbourne in 1986.

Generally played back pocket, from memory.

1976:
The Hawks Reserves of 1976 got off to a shaky start, losing their first 3 matches. However, somewhere between rounds 5 and 6, two of those losses were over-turned and credited as wins to Hawthorn. So whilst the results after 6 weeks would appear to be 2 wins and 4 losses, the round 6 ladder shows the Hawks as 4 and 2. Hence at the end of the H/A season, the Hawks finished 2nd with a 16 win season despite only winning 14 games. Hopefully the 1976 Footy Records will end up on-line soon as they may have an explanation. None of the online archived newspapers do.
According to page 18 of the Football Record:
  1. St. Kilda lost four points in Round 1
  2. South Melbourne lost four points in Round 1 (this is relatively well-known as the Swans kicked their highest-ever reserves score)
  3. Collingwood lost four points in Round 3
In the Under-19s:
  1. Hawthorn lost eight points for Round 1 and Round 3 wins
  2. South Melbourne lost four points for their Round 2 wins
    • As with the 1909 VFL seniors, this decided the U19 wooden spoon as Collingwood – who only won 5 games – gained 2 further wins to be two-and-a-half wins ahead of the Swans who received their fourth straight wooden spoon in the Under-19s

2018 Premiers!

Box Hill win an unlikely premiership, finishing the H/A season in 6th place after a 12 / 6 season. Having to travel to their opposition's home ground despit finishing higher, Box Hill were literally one second away from elimination that would have seen them finish 8th. Drawling level on the siren and then winning in extra time, Box Hill progressed through the finals eliminating Geelong (straight sets exit) in the Semi before winning the Prelim by a solitary point over Williamstown.

In the Grand Final against Casey, Box Hill trailled by as much as 25 points early in the game, and were still as good as 4 goals behind at various stages of the 3rd quarter. Showing sensational spirit, the Hawks ground their way to the front midway through the last quarter and held on to win by 10 points.

1946 the only missing one. Also 1941 is 90% likely but not 100% confirmed.
Interesting and valuable list.

It’s rather strange that one does not hear that Jack Hale – Hawthorn’s first senior coach to reach the finals – was reserves coach in 1950 and 1951, although it was more common then for a reserves coach to move up to senior level than it is today.

Would a list of Hawthorn Under-19s coaches between 1946 and 1991 be possible? I imagine many of them will be much lesser-known names than the Reserves coaches you have just listed, especially as the Hawk Under-19s did not make the finals and had only three seasons with more wins that losses between 1946 and 1968.

Would a list of Hawthorn Under-19s coaches between 1946 and 1991 be possible?
Pretty much not a hope in hell.

Russell Greene was coach in 1991. Could probably get the years we made finals, but otherwise I'd say it'd be next to impossible to get them all.

The Thirds/U19s were run as a completely separate entity to HFC for a good deal of the early years (as were the Seconds until WW2) so official records are very hard to come by. Nearly all the early 2nds coaches were Captain-Coach, not sure that would be the case with the younger Thirds sides.

A frustrating season where it seemed any gains were quickly lost. After a strong opening, the year became a struggle to back up last season's great finish. Clinging to a final 8 spot for much of the year, Box Hill lost their elimination final to finish 8th of the 15 sides.

18 v Melb 11.29 95 4.21 45 Won 50
5 wins, 12 losses and a draw. 10th place of 12. With no ten goal losses it probably felt like a super successful season. How about the combined accuracy of that last match. 15 goals 50. Hopefully the boys enjoyed it though — it would be another 40 matches before they tasted victory again.
According to both Demon Wiki and my old 1986 The Complete Book of VFL Records, Hawthorn actually kicked 11-19 (85) in the last round Reserves game. The inaccurate kicking was replicated in the seniors, and compiler Stephen Rodgers commented on page 258:
Stephen Rodgers said:
...In the final round of that season [1944] Melbourne and Hawthorn teams were badly off target to the tune of 35-80 — Melbourne won Seniors 14-27 to 6-13 and Hawthorn won Reserves 11-19 to 4-21
The Age, however, did give the quite amazing score shown — amazing given that in senior VFL/AFL football 50 aggregate behinds has been equalled or exceeded only once, by Richmond and South Melbourne in Round 21 of 1974 when the Tigers and Swans combined for 40-51 (291).

In contrast, The Argus gave the score as 11-19.

18 v Melb 11.29 95 4.21 45 Won 50
I finally got to look at the Football Record here and the Record says on page 6 of 16 that Hawthorn kicked 11-19 (85) rather than 11-29.
Garry Young won the Reserves League Goalkicking in 1956 with 49, this included a bag of 10 in round five and 7 in round eighteen. His form was good enough for promotion for 4 games in a row from round 8 — he kicked no goals on debut, 4 in each of his next two games, then none and was dropped. As we will see, he was a super consistent goalkicker at Reserve level for a number of years before establishing himself in the senior side, winning the Most Improved Player in 1959, and in keeping with Hawthorn tradition, again in 1961. He won the Hawks goalkicking in 1959 and 1960.
What’s remarkable about that 10 goal performance in Round 5 is that in the Seniors later that afternoon no team kicked ten goals! The highest score that afternoon was a mere 67 points, and the ground conditions were a major topic of discussion in the aftermath and in Every Game Ever Played. Given that Young in his two goalless Senior matches was playing the very tough defences of Carlton and Melbourne, one wonders if the selectors were not too harsh on him, especially as Hawthorn continued to have severe problems up forward for the remainder of the season (even taking into account the low scoring of the period and unfavourable grounds).

Thanks for this.

Since I posted that back in 2012 I have found a lot more info on the reserves details. I already had this one updated - the score went
4.4 to 1.4
7.10 to 1.8
9.13 to 1.14
11.19 to 4.21.
