1947:

The boys might have celebrated a little hard after their first win in 40 matches in round 1, given what happened in round 2. In the end 2 wins and a draw was not enough to avoid another 12th place and the spoon.

The score of 1.12 18 in round 5 is the equal lowest ever for the Hawks' Reserves. The side's final percentage of 51.4 at the end of the season is still the worst ever.

Another interesting reference to Hawthorn reserves appears in The Argus for this year http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article22437717 where reference is made to naming the reserves B&F award after Pat Keary who had "managed the seconds for 25 years" - would be great to find a list of winners of this award.

1990/91: Dion Sheahan - I played cricket against him up in country Vic for a few years around then, and I remember it was big news in the home town when he was drafted to the Hawks. He had a decent 1990 but was injured in 1991 after being cleaned up by Damien Monkhorst ! He later played at Werribee in the VFA.

Thanks Stemline this has been an awesome read.

One name I think needs a mention in terms of past reserves and links to the present is Willie Rioli; Cyril's Uncle, (younger brother of Maurice) who was drafted by Hawthorn in 1990. Very small wore number 33, and could turn around 180 degrees on a blade of grass without bending it. Was sadly just a little short for AFL. He now coaches Tiwi island bombers I think.

I did mention him, briefly, in the 1991 post:

Willie Rioli was the first indigenous player on our list since Percy Cummings in 1964/5. Taken at pick 48 in the 1990 draft, he didn't play senior football, but he did kick 20 goals for the Ressies in his only season at Hawthorn.

Cheers - always good to get some more recollections, that was the whole idea of the thread really.

I remember willie rioli in the third qtr of a game at (then) VFL park in the third term the ball came out looose from the pack and he went steaming after it, bent to pick it up at full tilt and missed it and overan it. Turned around grabbed it and turned around again and went on his way before anyone else could get near it. He had the manouverability of cyril, but shorter and stockier. Another perennial reserves player from a slightly earlier era, was the eyebrows on legs, Paul Considine. Always tapping at the senior side but never quite cementing his spot. Also Peter Murnane in the mould of Dean Anderson.

On the note of Not mentioning Willie rioli, my comment was more aimed at the fact that he was Cyril's Uncle. (People concentrate a lot on the fact that he is Murice's nephew, neglecting the fact that another uncle was at the club.

Speaking of Paul Hudson, pretty sure W.Rioli wore 37, as Huddo wore 33 all the way through to the GF win, then moved to Tucky's 17 the next year.

Edit: see page 33 here
http://cedric.slv.vic.gov.au/view/a...adjacency=&divType=&usePid1=true&usePid2=true

Hmmm... Interesting, I have the hawks spreadsheet with all the player numbers throughout history and it says he wore 37. I remember wondering at the time why he was wearing 33. (It's pretty hard to confuse Blonde Paul Hudson with Willie Rioli. But he definitely seemed to be wearing 33 in the game I watched. I watched the entire reserves game (I lived about 500 m from VFL park). Whatever the case, he may as well have worn the dreaded 36 for all the senior games he played.

He did play in the reserves from 1983, and didn't cement a spot in the Hawthorn side until 1988, so yeah, he played a lot of ressies footy.

Jack Cunningham, although now a Premiership Hero, found himself in the Reserves for the majority of the season. He was the outstanding performer for the Hawks Reserves though, both in goalkicking and being named in the bests most often.

David Albiston - probably a relation, anyone? - started at Hawthorn in 1962. His good form in the 2nds in the first half of the season earned him a senior debut in round 13 and he played the remainder of the year in the ones. He played 61 games through to the end of 1966, including the 1963 Grand Final. He won the Most Improved Award in 1964.

Graeme Haslem was another small (168cm) rover who liked a goal. He was in his second season at the Hawks, but after 3 senior games in 1961, he could only manage another 3 this season, and 2 the next.

The arrival of 'Delicate' Des Dickson at Hawthorn in 1962 caused quite a stir. A crash-bash style follower, stories abound of his debut in the Reserves in round 1 at the Western Oval, inciting the crowd with his somewhat, er, 'physical' game style. However it must have escaped the attention of the umpires as he played the following week, was named in the best players and made his debut for Hawthorn the week after that. He played the rest of the season in the seniors, winning the Best First Year Player Award. He finished up playing 73 games for the Hawks (missing only 4 through suspension).

Rod Olsson was a ruck-rover type who found it tough to hold his place in the senior team in his first season. However his Reserves form was good enough to earn 6 games in the ones. He ended up playing 116 games, including the 1963 Grand Final. He won the Best Clubman Award in 1963 and played in the triumphant Night Premierships of 1968 and 1969, also winning the Most Consistent Player Awards in those seasons, and also the Best Team Player Award in 1969. He ended up coaching Geelong.

Ken Beck was a 198cm ruckman. He and David Parkin were the only players to play in both the 1963 and 1971 Grand Finals. His form early for the Ressies in 1962 was good, but a strong patch in the middle of the season, culminating in a BOG in round 11, earned him a senior debut in round 12. He went on to play 143 games, and was a member of the Night Premiership sides of 1968 and 1969, and is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Stemline, just joined BF today to find out what you can tell me about Noel Browne, Mort's brother. Am seeking number of games in Unders & Reserves. What chance? He moved onto Sorrento FC, missing the 1964 premiership from injury 6 weeks out from finals, then made it into the 1966 grand final team, only for them to lose. Now retired he's a regular shopper at Stringers in Sorrento.
