I'm sorry mate I'm not going to be much help to you.Stemline, just joined BF today to find out what you can tell me about Noel Browne, Mort's brother. Am seeking number of games in Unders & Reserves. What chance? He moved onto Sorrento FC, missing the 1964 premiership from injury 6 weeks out from finals, then made it into the 1966 grand final team, only for them to lose. Now retired he's a regular shopper at Stringers in Sorrento.

Hi again Ram-Man, sorry my previous post was before reading your comments on HFC reserves. Will take your advice to look up teams published in newspaper. CheersHi Ram-Man, it's been ages since my previous visit to this site when I first signed on as a member. Thank you for article. Will show it to Noel BROWNE tomorrow. Can you help me with all player's reserves games played? Stalwart, Stem line, seems to have retired from posting to this site. Peter HABY, Hawks full time historian, put notice in last Sunday's Herald Sun, Desperately Seeking, seeking ex-Hawk Harold Turner, so I rang him with news I've been chasing him myself as Sorrento FC's 1935 & 1937 captain-coach (1935 premiership) but trail ends circa 1938-39 when cleared to play with Queenscliff's Garrison team. Have some data, after discovering he played at Maffra, Somerville, then Langwarrin's 1930 or 1931 premiership as c-c, from photo at LFC to prove it.

Elliott, Russ 50
Russ Elliot was a 185cm forward who enjoyed a prolific season in front of the sticks for the Ressies in 1937. He booted 8 goals in round 11 against Collingwood and repeated the dose in round 13 versus St Kilda. It would take him until the final rounds of 1939 to earn a senior debut however, after which he played just 9 games over 3 seasons.
Cheers mate! I certainly won't get around to mentioning every player who played some senior footy. Please add any memories you have!
I didn't realise, or had forgotten, that Tony Wilson was Ray's son. Good stuff.

Phillip Murton was a slightly built running type who had played for the Hawks' U19s in 1991. In 1992 he stepped it up to Reserves level and was quite at home, being named in the best players 14 times, including 10 times in the first 12 games, to earn a senior debut in round 14. He played 4 senior games that season, but missed the entire 1993 season with a broken leg. He started 1994 in the seniors, playing the first 3 games, but spent the rest of the year in the Ressies and left the club at the end of the season.Code:Player In best Our BOG Murton, Phillip 14 4 Nixon, Ricky 10 2 Barnett, John 7 1 Berry, Domenic 6 McCrabb, Austin 6 2 McDonald, Alex 6 2 Dear, Greg 5 2 Graham, Mark 5 Madigan, Greg 5 O'Dwyer, Kieran 5 Wynd, Stuart 5 Young, Matthew 5 3 Crow, Scott 4 Johnston, Michael 4 1 Taylor, Richard 4 1 Whittlesea, Greg 4 Crawford, Shane 3 Nugent, Glenn 3 Steele, Stuart 3 Hudson, Paul 2 Hug, Ernie 2 1 Jencke, Ray 2 1 McDonald, Anthony 2 Wittman, Chris 2 Ayres, Gary 1 Blood, Michael 1 Burke, Alistair 1 Cooper, Paul 1 Crough, Justin 1 1 Maginness, Scott 1 Peter-Budge, John 1 Taylor, Jason 1 1
At the end of 1991 the Hawks traded pick 64 to Fitzroy in return for Tasmanian tall Jason Taylor. Taylor had been picked at number 11 by the Roys in the 1989 draft but only played 7 games there. He slotted straight into the Hawthorn senior side and played some good footy, playing 20 senior games and winning the Best First Year Player Award. He fell away in 1993, but returned to top form in 1994, becoming an important player in the Hawks' forward structure and winning the Most Serviceable Player Award. He was a senior player through to 1996, but when the side finally found some mid-season form, his went backwards and he found himself out of the side in the second half of that year, and then delisted and picked up by Collingwood at season's end.
Another Taylor, Richard, also started at Hawthorn in 1992. He was selected with pick 39 in the 1991 draft. A small rover, his BOG for the Ressies in round 19 saw him elevated to the senior side for his debut in the utopian 160-point demolition of Essendon in round 20, in which he contributed 3 goals. He won the 1992 Encouragement Award, which was perhaps a clue as to what was to come as he did his knee (for the second time of his career) late in 1993 and was delisted after having only added 2 more senior games that year. Come the 1995 pre-season draft, Hawthorn were pipped for Dermott Brereton by Collingwood, so re-drafted Taylor. He settled into the side, to play 108 games over 6 further seasons, picking up the Most improved Player Award in 1996, the Most Determined Player Award in 1997, the Most Courageous Player Award in 1998, and playing in the 1999 Night Premiership side.
Tall defender Mark Graham first played for the Hawks Reserves in 1992, and would be the last player to debut for Hawthorn without being drafted or traded for. Early in 1993, a decent game in round 5 for the Reserves was followed by his senior debut in round 6 against Adelaide at Football Park. He sat the entire game on the bench, and didn't get another look-in that year. When he didn't get a go in any of the pre-season matches in 1994, things weren't looking great for him, but come the season proper he was named in the the Reserve's best players in 2 of the first 3 games, including being named the Hawks' best in round 3. Coupled with the fact the senior side had been slaughtered the last two weeks, it was enough to be given a senior berth in round 4, especially in the absence of the injured Chris Langford. Graham matched up on Steve Kernahan all day and wasn't completely disgraced, considering the hiding Hawthorn received that day. Heebie didn't look back and became a hugely important member of the side, winning the Most Improved Award in 1994, the Best Clubman and Most Serviceable Award in 1996, the Most Consistent Player Award in 1997, the Most Determined Award in 1998, the Best Clubman again in 1999, and the Most Serviceable Player Award again in 2002. He was a member of the 1999 Night Premiership side, and played a total of 223 games for the Hawks - unfortunately the most Hawthorn games without a Premiership - and is a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.
Shane Crawford was taken with pick 13 in the 1991 draft. He kicked 10 goals and got in the Reserves best players 3 times in 1992, but would never play 2nds footy again. Making his senior debut in round 1 of 1993, Crawf would become a Hawthorn champion, playing 305 games and slotting 224 goals. His accomplishments:

Shannon Gibson was a short full-forward. He kicked a couple of goals in one of the famous narrow wins down at Geelong. Gibson managed 25 senior games over 1995-1997, before being traded to Collingwood for Paul Sharkey.
I was there that day. With a couple of Geelong supporter mates - great times.
Other random thoughts/facts about some lesser names mentioned.
From other clubs - but didn't do much with us.
McCrabb (Geelong), Bunn (Fitzroy), Stevenson (Fitzroy) - has something to do with our club still down in Tassie, Allen (St.Kilda) and Baxter (Footscray) - he probably had a good year or two though.
To other clubs after not doing much with us.
Rigoni (Melbourne), Barnard (Essendon) - part of the deal that got us Salmon, Hargreaves (Geelong) - a small forward who I thought was ok, Young (St.Kilda), Crow (Collingwood) and Anthony McDonald (Carlton) - the middle and least of the three McDonalds.
Kieron O'Dwyer should be mentioned as a first round pick that never played senior footy.
And surely Simon Crawshay, a tall ruckman with a mop of blonde hair should be mentioned even though he was largely ineffective when playing seniors. A bit of a cult figure (or maybe it was just me).

Brendan Krummel had played at both West Coast and Fremantle prior to Hawthorn drafting him at the end of 1995 with an eyebrow-raising pick 5. He struggled for impact in 1996, managing just 11 senior games. In 1997 he earned himself the Most Serviceable Player Award, playing 21 games and missing just one after nearly having his eye gouged out by Sydney's Jason Mooney, who was cleared of that charge but suspended for 4 matches for headbutting Krummel. Krummel made a habit of being a high profile victim, getting himself completely poleaxed by Byron Pickett a year or so later. All up, Krummel played 64 games for the Hawks. Serviceable, but not really justifying his top-5 draft selection.
Scott Grainger was a rangy tall forward, who never amounted to anything much at all at AFL level. He didn't play senior footy and was gone from the scene by the end of 1997. But geez he was a great player when you stuck him at CHF in the AFL 96 Finals Fever PC game.
Mate u r on fireCrawshay was part of a little era of didn't-quite-make-it ruckman that included David Loats, Laurence Bingham, Steven Rode (1 game), Brett O'Farrell, Randal Bone.
You know what - I also have a memory of him being dropped from the senior side for that game, but my recollection is that he didn't actually play in the reserves game against Fitzroy which was played at Glenferrie Oval, clashing with the senior game. Crawf instead came to Waverley and watched on as an emergency as Hawthorn beat Adelaide. So while he was dropped, technically he didn't play magoos after 92!I hate pointing out little errors but if I know a fact, I have to share it. Crawford - my favourite-ever Hawthorn player did actually play one more reserves game. He was dropped after a loss to the Eagles in Perth in '93 (about Round 20) which was the 3rd loss in a row for the first time since 1982 - that famous run of never losing 3 in a row for so long. The Eagles were reigning premiers and we were with them well into the last quarter when Crawford gave away a very dubious 50m-penalty - well it was one that technically was correct but not consistent with the flow of the game. West Coast goaled and that was it. I have a vivid memory of Crawf giving the ump a look of - come on, that is so harsh - and he was dropped for the next game, came straight back in the following week and never again played magoos. I haven't looked this up to double-check but I remember it well and it was like he was dropped for the 50m penalty.
I reckon the 91 draft was the worst player pool ever. Look it up on Wikipedia - it's abysmal. There's Crawford, Dunkley, Metropolis, Matthew Hogg, Darren Kowal & Ryan O'Connor and that's it.
You are probably correct on that call. I read it somewhere relatively recently (about the time of this thread) and was surprised myself. In fact wikipedia here says it was Alan Ezard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_of_the_YearI am enjoying all this information immensely but I have to point out that Gary Buckenara did not win Mark of the Year in 1986 - Tony Morwood of the Sydney ney Swans did for his mark in the 1st Semi-Final against Fitzroy. I still have the footage of Morwood accepting the prize on World of Sport and he made a comment that he wouldn't be accepting the award if Bucky had held onto that almost speccy in the Grand Final.
Hmm you might be thinking of someone else - whilst he ended up playing FOR them, he never played against Footscray. An interesting quirky little tat about Michael Johnston from Leongatha (whom my Dad and Uncles all played for) - Johnston's career was 5 games - 3 of which were against Footscray.
So while he was dropped, technically he didn't play magoos after 92!
I have no way of proving this of course, I'm just going off a hazy memory. But I can also recall having a conversation with a mate when Crawf won the Brownlow and discussing whether he played reserves after 1992, and we concluded that he didn't, despite getting dropped in 93. Checking now I can show you he didn't feature in the reserves results:
Goalkickers: Brereton 5, J.Barnett 2, Bunn 2, J.Kitchen 2, Crow, P.Dear, Hargreaves, Holland, A.Kemp, A.McDonald, R.Walker.
Best: Maginness, Lawrence, Brereton, Crow, Holland, Bunn, R.Walker.
Can't be 100% sure but i'm going to stick with the no magoos after 1992!
