Int, Xellis, Tails, Brown/Dowler, Shields

EMG Musto, Murphy, Whitecross

Injured: Dasher and croady - these two would probably come in for shields and F1 when and if fully fit.

WX very unlucky to miss out on the 22, Could come in for birch, laddo, goo, brown based on form/injuries.

Shoe likely to start CHB but I expect gibbo to help out frequently as F1 finds his feet.

am i the only person who genuinely believes rioli will be our starting rover from this year on:

B:Ladson, Gilham, Gibson
HB:
Birchall, Schoenmakers, Hodge
C:
Bateman, Mitchell, Young
HF:
Hooper, Franklin, Burgoyne
F:
Dowler, Roughead, Osborne
R:
Renouf, Sewell, Rioli
I:
Taylor, Brown, Lewis, Ellis

Depth:Guerra, Muston, Shiels, Savage, Suckling, Morton, Murphy, Whitecross, Tuck
Develop:
Lisle, Lowden, Grimley, Stratton, Williams, Duryea
Injured:
Bailey, Croad,

I've also got a theory that we leave renouf and taylor out and just play hodge in the ruck and rove to the opposition.

Why do people think Gibson will be played in the pocket or on a flank?

I would have thought that he will be given full back or centre half back and Schoey the other. Surely the last few years have shown that the club thinks Gilham is better as a third tall. I can't remember him ever getting the opposition's key forward for a whole game.

Few reasons CLA:

1. Gilham is a definite KPD. I know you don't rate him too highly but I think he is second only to Croad in lock down defence.

2. Shoenmakers is the future CHB. Has all the goods, needs time to develop.

3. Gibbo does his best work as third tall from what I've seen. Sure, he CAN lock down on a guy like we've seen with buddy, but I'd prefer Gilly to have that role with Gibbo coming in.

4. I love versatile players being allowed to play versatile (e.g. Hodge at the end of 08). Whilst they can play KP, leving them there for extended periods wears them down, imo.

I am really looking forward in seeing how liam shiels is going to go. he played really well in patches last year and he was only a part time footballer (school). I can see him being the surprise packet next season.

Agree with 2 - 4 LP, but not sure Gilham really is a lock down defender. If he was such, surely he would get guys like Riewoldt, J Brown, Cloke, Fevola, Mooney, etc?

I actually think he is the better guy for the lesser forwards, because he's handy coming in to a contest and mopping up or finding space after the fall of the ball and being used to bring it out, a la Birch.

Interested to see how it pans out this year. It's just nice to know we have three guys that can rotate on the big forwards.

I reckon the icing on the cake in 2010 will be if Croad makes a successful return (or Stratton holds down a key role up back) which enables us to play Schoey as the 3rd forward. He is the lead up forward Mitch Thorp was supposed to be and has excellent endurance, mobility and skills and great size. He was a goalkicker in his junior days so knows where they are. You can just see him getting away from his opponent on the lead as a forward and not having to go body on body where he has been struggling in defence.

Could you imagine trying to match up Buddy, Roughie and Schoey? and then thinking about who you would play on Cyril when he 'rests' up forward or Burgoyne or Hooper. It is extraordinarily potent particularly with the midfield we have assembled.

I have no doubt Dowler should be given first crack at Willo's position but Schoey is a class above Dowler in ability and is a more imposing figure already and you can never have enough goalkickers up forward so if the chance arises...

I think body on body work will be a strength for Schoey this year. He more than held his own in the latter stages of 09, and he's only got stronger since then.

I'm not sure we really need a third tall either. Osborne, Brown and Rioli are all pretty good leads/marking targets, and if we can free up Hodge to play a creative role on the HFF we've got more than enough potency to stretch any defence in the league as it is...

Having a class 3rd tall gives the other 2 talls so much more freedom and creates so much more unpredictability and difficulty with opposition match-ups. It is the key and if all of them are mobile then it is chaos. It is hard enough to get 1 class tall in a side, let alone 3.

I still reckon Schoey will struggle body on body for the next couple of seasons until he gets stronger legs. You dont win one on ones because you have big guns - it is your legs and core strength. He is still a way off in this area IMO but he can run like the wind.

Going on what I've seen at training this year they are preparing Schoemakers for a defensive position. He is taking some kick outs in game type drills and picking up Buddy or Roughhead in the one on ones. Has done very well against Franklin too.

Swiped the template of this team from Bradway as it is the closest I have seen to my dream 22 - made a couple of slight changes to suit personal preference:

B: Gibson Gilham Guerra

HB: Birchall Schoenmakers Ladson

C: Bateman Mitchell Young

HF: Burgoyne Franklin Lewis

F: Dowler Roughead Rioli

R: Renouf Hodge Sewell

INT: Ellis Taylor Brown Shiels

EMG: Whitecross Osborne Hooper

A couple of considerations to make:
  • Obviously it changes if Max or Croady get fit;
  • I wish I could get Hooper in there - pity the poor bugger that misses out though; and
  • What a great environment for guys like Moss, Milne, Suckling, Stratton & Lisle to learn their trades. Good times to come.

hawks for the flag!!!!!

i used to feel sorry for the rest of the comp for not having burgoyne in there team, he is so good to watch

struggling to do it. cant believe the players that im leaving out. our best 22 without injuries is ridiculous. This assumes all players fit at say round 22 (could be optimistic for Bailey) and near to linear improvement from the kids.

B "Ladson, Rick " "Gilham, Stephen " "Gibson, Joshua "
HB "Birchall, Grant " "Schoenmakers, Ryan " "Hodge, Luke "
C "Bateman, Chance " "Ellis, Xavier " "Young, Clinton "
HF "Lewis, Jordan " "Franklin, Lance " "Burgoyne, Shaun "
F "Rioli, Cyril " "Roughead, Jarryd " "Brown, Campbell "
Foll "Bailey, Max " "Mitchell, Sam " "Sewell, Brad "

Int "Renouf, Brent " "Guerra, Brent " "Muston, Beau " "Osborne, Michael "

Emg "Whitecross, Brendan " "Dowler, Beau " "Hooper, Rhan "

Unlucky "Croad, Trent " "Morton, Jarryd " "Taylor, Simon " "Tuck, Travis " "Shiels, Liam "

I think if you include Bailey you should include Croad.

Put Guerra on the field over Ladson as having two designated kickers. seems a requirement and Ladson is a better all round player so would go on the bench.

Other than that rate Shiels as a better prospect at this stage than Muston.

FB Gibson - Croad - Gilham
HB Hodge - Shoenmakers - Guerra
CE Bateman - Ellis - Young
HF Lewis - Franklin - Burgoyne
FF Rioli - Roughead - Brown
FOL Bailey - Mitchell - Sewell
IN Renouf - Ladson - Shiels - Osborne

Round 1

FB: Guerra , Gilham , Gibson
HB: Birchall , Schonmakers , Hodge
CW: Ellis , Sewell , Lewis
HF: Burgoyne , Dowler , Rioli
FF: Osbourne , Roughead , Brown
FOLL: Taylor , Mitchell , Shiels
INT: Ladson , Renouf , Hooper , Murphy

I didnt play Young or Croad because i dont know if they will be ready and Franklin and Bateman are out for round 1

Unfortunately, i tend too think these blokes wont play again.

You guys seem to have an impressive best 22,for 2010.

The only question mark is TRENT CROAD.

I doubt he'll play.If he does he'll be injury prone....Time to put him out to

pasture and let shooooooomakers take over Croad's position
Other than that pretty impressive line up.
Good luck in 2010

Cheers Daics.

The coaching staff have treated Trents return as an abo****e bonus, in 2009 we treated his return as pretty much a given. The difference in 2010 is we will have a fitter Stephen Gilham, a bigger and slightly experienced Ryan Shoenmakers and the addition of Josh Gibson.
Our defence will perform very well in 2010, if we could somehow manage Trent Croad to return, it would be the icing.

I think we will be looking to get Max Bailey right for the last 8 or so games in the season and ready to go in finals. He showed this year whilst playing he is a good ruckman.

It sure is tough to fit them all in...will be nice to have that problem next year.

B: Gibson / Gillham / Guerra
HB: Birchall / Schoenmakers / Ladson
C: Bateman / Mitchell/ Ellis
HF: Burgoyne / Franklin / Lewis
F: Rioli / Roughhead / Dowler
Foll: Taylor / Hodge / Sewell

Injured - may return?: Croad / Bailey / Young

I for one would love to see max up and firing, but logic tells me that not many guys have come back from 3 reco's. Exspecially playing in such a vunerable position as ruck.

As for croad, IMO the only thing that saved him from getting the chop was his eligability 2 be put as a veteran. That said, as much as he was, and hopefully still is, a great CHB, i think we have a great replacement in shoey who from all reports has put on some big size and is tearing up the track.
