Help me with my top 20 Players of All time list

Martin’s dominant games are when the Tigers are 6 goals up. No where to be found in the tough games or losing games.
In part his is true because he is a player that plays more attacking and forward of the ball. The other side of the ledger is that for the last 3 seasons we have won a lot of games and Martin is a massive part of that, in some games the difference between the sides. To say he doesn't turn up in tough games is nonsense, how else did he win a Brownlow (and accolades from just about everyone). His 2017 Norm Smith for example. His dominant last half of the season translated into us not losing any games in that time, (not all due to Martin obviously). His slightly down 2018 and start of this season was all between the ears, he said so himself, once he worked that out, he was back to his best.

interesting to see peoples thoughts on how they would rank voss hird buckley. those three were the 3 premier mids of their decade and often are listed one after the other in these types of lists.

voss hird buckley and robert harvey how would you rank them
Id lean toward Harvey, Voss, Buckley, Hird personally
I would probably switch Voss and Harvey around Buckley Hird.. happy to go with that. I would not call Hird a pure Mid either..more like a half forward with a free run. The other 3 were more like the old fashioned centreman type.

Alex Jesaulenko is one of the greatest players to ever play the game and would certainly be in my best 22 after watching 50 plus years of footy.
Jezza top 20 of all time...and a better player than Leigh Matthews...A BALL player ...Great Mark, Balance, leap...Beautiful Kick had it all. Played Half forward half back FF...Ruck Rover ...All Australian quality in all positions. " Jezza you Beauty"

Pendlebury just a gatherer around stoppages? Stat padded? Now while I’m open to debate let’s actually make reasonable points here..
Pendlebury in full flight does not get the excitement metre to move... Buckley made it move. Unreasonable to you maybe ..and I am not discounting his value to the Collingwood side of the past decade.

Excellent.

I'll add -

Ivor Warne-Smith - didn't start playing in Melbourne until 1925 (because he fought in WW1 and then captain-coached in Tassie). Won 2 Brownlows (26 & 28). Absolute Legend. Played CHF.

Bill Hutchison - Essendon 1950s - 2 Brownlows, 7 Top-10s.

Vic Thorp - In the argument for the Greatest Full-Back All Time. But he played in the 1920s.

Personal Opinion - I think Gary Dempsey was the best Ruck I ever say (and I saw Nicholls, Cox, Moss ands Madden). But Roy Wright is the only Ruckman to win 2 Brownlows (Peter Moore was a Forward/Ruck).

I love the History of any sport. (I don't know enough history of SA, WA or Tassie football - wish I did.).
Is Ivor Warne-Smith the great grandfather of Lewd Warne-Text ?

Jezza was a genuine centreman/flanker (183cm). Yeah he played full forward one year (1970) and kicked the tonne. He also played a couple of seasons on a back flank (circa 75’), was a sometime ruck rover and finished his career as a back pocket. One of the most versatile players in history and you’re judging him on goal stats? Aren’t stats just the dumbest!
But what were his super coach numbers like 🤔 because that’s the yardstick nowadays apparently lol

Gary Wilson may not get the rover spot as the best ever but would comfortably sit on the half forward flank unmatched for that position.

Hodge and Judd need spots
John Sharrock was a better half forward than Gary Wilson..but then again Wilson was a tallish on ball player not really a rover probably more of a ruck rover at Fitzroy....Not in top 20 of all time but a very good footballer.

More spectacular but surely not a better player?

People in the media make a great deal about Dustin Martin's 2017 season where he averaged 30 disposals & 1.5 goals per game, culminating with the Norm Smith medal and 36 Brownlow votes.
Leigh Matthews averaged 27 disposals & close to 4 goals per game in 1977 and finished with 34 Brownlow votes (didn't even win it!). That is simply absurd. Truly incredible consistency.

The media have short memories.
Guys like Blight, Matthews, Ablett Snr, Jesa, they were incredibly dynamic footballers who consistently won football games off their own boot. More so, they would have loved the game that it is today. The freedom awarded to offensive minded players.

stephen michael goes alright.
Martin and fyfe are putting together fair resumes.
Akermanis is underrated about how good he was still top three for stats all time for I50 and score involvements i think.
Was mccloed on the list, i loved him as a player.

If it’s wet Aker is easily in the convo as an all time great.
Some of his games were out of this world good. I appreciate a good wet weather specialist. Mind you he was damn good in the dry also.

As a Pies fan just going to comment on the Buckley situation, doesn’t deserve to be there but if you must have a Pies mid replace him with Pendlebury, overtaken Bucks’ career in my opinion.
Pendlebury is not in the top 20 mids of the past 30 years let alone of all time.

I like your post, however two points that need to be fixed up.

1) Leigh Matthews in the 1977 Brownlow number can be halved because that was the year that both umpires handed in the vote card.

2) today’s game has no space what so ever that’s why we keep making silly rules that just upset everybody

If you are trying to get down to top 20 of all time I think you can immediately remove Syd Coventry, Bruce Doull, Kevin Murray, Doug Wade, Alex Jesaulenko, Jack Dyer, Keith Greig, Michael Voss, John Nicholls and Nathan Buckley.

All great players but not in top 20 of all time. That brings you down to 22 so you still have some editing to do. You probably need to consider Gary Dempsey and Greg Williams. Personally I think both are in the top 20 and I would probably take out Jack Regan and Simon Madden.

I agree with you. I think out of these 4 it is either Hird or Harvey at 1. Buckley at 3 and Voss at 4. Voss was an inspirational player but was more about hardness at the ball than football skill. The other 3 had more individual impact. Voss was the bull that got the ball to Akermanis, Lappin and Black.

Franklin over Jezza for me.

Jezza Is an AFL legend but with 444 goals from 279 games could you say his record stacks up in comparison to Buddy's?

On SM-G973F using BigFooty.com mobile app

Franklin to me has a massive question mark over him. As a KPF competing with Hart, Lockett, Ablett, Hudson, Coleman etc he is extremely poor at overhead/contested marking. Probably the best 6'5" plus payer ever when the ball hit the ground and has a freaky highlights reel but did not have the impact or consistency of the great KPFs.

When looking at a "best of all time" list - so in this case the best ever since 1897, you've set yourself an almost impossible task. As most posts here confirm, there's a strong inherent bias towards players that one has actually seen play - therefore subjective opinions (like Seeds) are essentially totally useless in this sort of exercise.

About the only thing I can suggest is to pick a team based on objective criteria like B&F awards, Brownlows and media best player awards - although even these criteria are difficult to trace all the way back to the start.

One example is Bob Skilton - few here would have seen him play, but 9 club B&F's and 3 Brownlows suggests a strong objective claim to a 'best ever' spot.
