For a while there I was thinking "maybe the players do have a right to compensation?", but I just decided, f__k 'em. Do they really expect to get compensation equal to their losses? If they did, that would be tantamount to no penalty at all - getting the same money to sit out the year doesn't sound too bad to me. Big deal they missed a year of footy - happens all the time to players with a knee injury. There's got to be a financial penalty to this - if they get full compensation, they've really lost nothing. And do they want extra money for loss of reputation? Surely they have to take responsibility for their own reputation.

I thought the reason that Heppell sued Essendon was more to do with him losing his personal sponsors and the subsequent earnings after the CAS verdict was finalised, rather than him suing the club for running the doping program itself.

If that was the case, then
a. I wouldn't have thought that the salary cap would come into it, even if the compensation came from Essendon
b. I could see him staying at Essendon next year

The difference is that Hird was obviously appealing against poor process. But in the case of ASADA/WADA, they just didn't like the judgement and started complaining to CAS. Totally different scenarios.
