Society/Culture Horse racing is cruel

Humans die playing sports all over the world, from footballers to cricketers to motor racing drivers both in cars and bikes, horses get looked after very well and the industry provides thousands of jobs and humans being humans will race two cockroaches if they have too. Horses sleep securely in clean, well-kept quarters, nursing from their well-fed mothers, and eating well-balanced diets even during their off-season spells, winters and through droughts. Contrary to popular belief, racehorses aren’t constantly training for races and kept in stalls; they are also allowed to graze, sleep, play in sunny fields, and experience community bliss.
Horses are mostly happy creatures and they love to run for their own mental stimulation. Racehorses and their humans form close, loving bonds. Racehorses experience care and nurturing, soft voices, daily grooming, physical touch, and strokes from their handlers. All this leads to the cultivation of mutual trust and respect. I'll wager most humans on this board don't always get that at home?. The Cup is over and the spring carnival is coming to an end, horse racing will continue on in every state and all over the world just as it always has with great public interest and most of all care for the participants. It is far from being cruel.

You are appealing to emotions of something that does not exist. They are being bred for the sole purpose of human exploitation. Just look at the way they are bred, hand breeding and artificial insemination.
Artificial insemination is not allowed. Come back when you know what you are talking about.

Surrogacy and artificial insemination are prohibited in thoroughbred racing, with the Australian Stud Book stating that horses must be bred naturally. To be registered as a Thoroughbred, a foal must be the product of a “live cover,” meaning a witnessed natural mating of a stallion and a mare. Though artificial insemination and embryo transfer are possible and common in other horse breeds, it is banned with Thoroughbreds

He didn't specify that, he simply said that AI wasn't allowed.

It is clearly allowed in Australia, presumably for show type horses.

I didn't know one way or another, so when I saw the post I looked it up out of interest.

Again, people have a choice when they participate in sport. Horses don't get that choice.

And if people form such a close, loving bond with a racehorse, why do they, for example, send it off to be turned into pet meat?

Horses like to run, they are happy to run in races, but i've never had the conversation with one to verify that. Humans are a different creature altogether, they whinge, complain, cheat and lie in almost everything they do...the Horse has got a good life. Many Racehorse owners spare no expense in ensuring that a horse receives regular physical assessments to ensure it’s healthy. Most blokes won't go to see a Doctor...

People form close, loving bonds with racehorses because they win lots of money.
Big industry that's not going away.

Tip for the last day of the Spring Carnival

Until they're of no use. Then they're turned in to pet meat.

the industry provides thousands of jobs

That's nice. Exploiting horses for employment, so we're clear here.

humans being humans will race two cockroaches if they have too.

Not particularly relevant though.

Get real. it's not going away and why should it? Racehorses in Australia have always been well looked after. It brings in millions of dollars and employs thousands of people. We live in a world where people want to ban this and stop that, I guess people just like to complain.

When animals die so that people can have a bet, get s**tfaced and dress to the nines, people have every right to complain.

This is what I think makes the discussion interesting - it seems it is more a puritan complaint people have regarding how some other people choose to enjoy themselves. As an example, if we choose to enjoy consuming milk or eggs (neither of which is essential for us) then the treatment of animals is much, much, worse here than in horse racing. I guess the argument though is the consuming milk and eggs is more acceptable than gambling, drinking alcohol and dressing in a non-conservative way.

Then ban every participating sport in the world. It's nonsense. Admittedly Racehorses are at risk of harm during races, training and trials with the main types of injuries involving muscle, bones, tendons and ligaments, humans do this "willingly" in virtually every Olympic sport, Mortor racing, Boxing, AFL, Cricket, Baseball, Soccer, Basketball and a large number of high school or college kids die every year playing American football even now..In The USA more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and younger get hurt or seriously injured annually playings sports or participating in recreational activities. 938 pedal cyclists were killed in 2020, a nine percent increase from 2019.

Let's go back 20 years in Victoria Australia.

The Victorian State Trauma Registry and the National Coroner’s Information Service were used to identify and describe sport/recreation-related serious injuries, including deaths, occurring during the period July 2001 to June 2003. Age-adjusted rates of serious injury and death were calculated using participation figures for each sport and general population data.

Results: There were 150 cases of serious injury and 48 deaths. All sports are risky and you won't stop humans from running, jumping, cycling, fighting or jumping from one building to another.! Then there is:
  • Abseiling.
  • Bungee Jumping.
  • Canyoning.
  • Diving.
  • Motocross.
  • Mountain Biking.
  • Mountaineering.
  • Skateboarding
  • White Water Rafting.
  • Shark Diving.
  • Hang Gliding.
  • Climbing And Abseiling.
  • Adventure Caving.
  • Blue Mountains Trekking.
  • Cliff Camping
  • Just like humans and I suppose these extreme sports are some sort of mental stimulation, animals need a purpose just the same. Racing and training help them expend energy and also activates their brain cells and fire up neurons. This keeps them happy and prevents boredom, anxiety, stress, and loneliness. Racehorses are very well taken care of. They get prompt medical and dental help as soon as an issue arises. Unlike humans, they don't deliberately drink, smoke, or take drugs for any extra stimulation. Humans are always going to go to extremes, irrespective of the dangers involved and they will do this willingly while nobody really raises an eyebrow... It's the usual springtime argument, meanwhile, humans will be doing stupid and dangerous things all year round and finding new ways to harm themselves doing it. Humans love to complain. Grumbling and complaining comes from a root of bitterness that is so deep within your core that you are blinded when it creeps up on you. If it's not Horse Racing today, it will be something else tomorrow. The avenues for complaint, and the media’s hyping of every little thing tend to blind us to what’s really important.

There is absolutely no point in discussing this with you any further until you understand a concept which has been pointed out several times already - choice.

People choose to participate in sports and other activities. Racehorses (in particular) don't get that choice. They are forced to.

60kg person forces a 400kg horse to do something against its will?

One day my my neighbour asked me to do him a favour.
Can you give me a hand? I just need someone to hold these horses while I shoot them.
Told him no way,tie them to a tree or a fence.
TBF old mate is a pro roo shooter and owns a pet food business.
Anyway, enjoy the last day of the Spring Carnival and I'll catch you all next year when this thread gets bumped.
Gamble and drink irresponsibly and good luck on the punt.

By that logic you think people who have pets are cruel though.

I get that choice is a factor but it is not the slam dunk factor you are making it out to be.

Many animals in this world are not completely free but live better lives than most that are
