Ceiling is probably a prelim. If you said in round 15 last year carlton would make a prelim? Not sure if serious
I would have said at the start of 2023 that Carltons list should be capable of reaching a prelim and despite a complete **** show early in the season they ended up getting there.

I don't think one could say the same for the Hawks this year, other top 8 teams are just way more stacked for talent. Be a fair achievement to win an elimination final with their current list imo.

Up till round 15 or so they had hardly beaten anyone of note for something like 20 games. It was a stunning turnaround. Along with their mates GES

You’ll forgive us for not being ‘respectful’ of talent when our bunch of nobodies keeps beating them

Or is it just ‘luck’ week after week after week?

Key Back: Sam Frost
Key Forwards: Mabior Chol, Calsher Dear

This side will get ironed out by a good team in finals if they make it. Not good enough in the key positions.

They are now at a stage where they should be targeting areas of need through trade and free agency.
The premiership favourites have McCartin, Melican, Amartey, McDonald and McLean. It doesn’t take much to match that

In response to the thread title, the key to beating them is to take their game away by dominating them in the aerial contest. The team must continuously take away their exit kick on the wing and quickly return the ball forward and mount pressure on their backline.

Adelaide did this well on the weekend but were only able to sustain enough aerial dominance and defensive pressure for a quarter. Once the hawks got their game going it was like some of Hawthorn's defenders didn't even have opponents and nek minite the entire Hawks team was running circles around Adelaide.

Freo did it well against them too but could but sustain it for 3 quarters.

Geelong did it very well for an entire match.

If pressure drops off, and the Hawks manage to spread the game out before half time it is game over.
Thing is we have coverage at BH if we need extra talls in defence. If it genuinely becomes an issue every week we would call for reinforcements and release guys like Weddle for a more freewheeling role. ATM teams haven't been good enough to exploit the defence or we have adjusted how we were playing so it doesn't become a problem. There's a reason were chasing Barass as he is the gorilla who can be there for the long quick kick and thwart the chances of scoring.

My view on the list would be as such. The bolded are players I believe have the ability to step up into the A tier in time - All Aus, top 10 in their position types.

A - Sicily, Moore

B+ - Meek, Day, Worpel, Newcombe, Impey, Amon

B - Lewis, Scrimshaw, D'Ambrosio, Chol, Macdonald, Nash, Ginnivan, Hardwick, Weddle

C - Dear, Watson, Ward, Frost, Reeves, Jiath, Gunston, Breust, Mackenzie, Maginness*

D - Morrison, Stephens, DGB, Ryan, McCabe, Hustwaite Serong, Butler, Blanck, Phillips, Ramsden, Scaife, Mitchell, Bennetts, B.Macdonald, O'Sullivan, Tucker

Still think they're a few pieces away, need a couple more A grade talents in the side before there would be any chance of a dynasty. Freo and the Swans are better set up for one at this stage imo.
I'm sorry Sicily is not A grade according to you?. I've seen enough without reading the rest. Bloke is having an impact with a sore shoulder for crying out loud.

We've also got a better midfield.
If the defence is fit, it's easily stronger than Hawthorn's.
You have 3 absolutely elite mids. The others are not that much better if at all than ours. Our small forwards are by far better and arguably as good as any in the comp.
The best small defender in the league?? What?
Tell me you never watch Hawthorn without saying you never watch Hawthorn. Go to bed mate.

Scrimshaw is Key back too. Been fantastic this year. Weddle is the 3rd tall/Hybrid. All around the same size 194-195. Blanck is the gorilla on our list who's obviously out for the year.

Can't really think of many others, might be some young up and coming but too early to tell. Saad and Salem are really good defensively as well but Hardwick is quite a bit stronger than both so can play on more types, they are more the rebounding distributing types anyway.

If your picking one of these guys for Toby Greene your going with Hardwick.
Completely nullifies any player he goes to. Find it remarkable people out there still don't get it. He was in high demand before he signed on again with us this year for a reason.

Absolutely. Would bet the house the Hawks don't get near it this season. Your list is miles off Sydney, Brisbane, WBD, Carlton, Freo, GWS etc for talent. Well coached and riding a wave of momentum atm, will get found out in finals if they make it.
They've beaten 4 of those 6 teams.

So are the two best current coaches Mitchell and Scott? For getting the most out of their poor lists?
