How do you beat Collingwood?

Collingwood are lean on media darlings. no shortage of champions as theAA side will no doubt show.

 You gotta be shitting me: just because the public don't get excited about your players, doesn't cancel out the media's obsession with all things Collingwood.

Leon's 2009 and 2011 output has been double what Cyril has ever put out there for a season, please do not mention him when discussing stars. Thanks

LOLOL

A junk time specialist vs the most creative small forward the game's seen in years. Leon's lucky his career wasn't snuffed out after his third successive failed GF performance last year.

Yes, Leon is a junktime specialist down in the back pocket there, when it hits red time he loves to chalk up a few easy spoils, shephards and 1%ers to boost his stats.

Cyril is the most creative small forward the game has seen, for a 2 minute burst, once per month.

Learn something from 08, and realise H&A dominance doesn't just mean you'll win everything come September.
Malthouse has seen more Grand Finals than you've had hot dinners..

I'm sure he's more up to speed than you :p

Law of the jungle sweetheart, kill or be killed.. we are ruthless ;)

That explains quite a bit, actually.

I like your intensity. Usually you would focus that on someone outside your own organisation though.

Kill our own guru... we are ruthless.

I think different teams will be using different tactics to try and beat Collingwood. Playing to your strengths and trying to exploit the other teams weaknesses is standard of course, I found this really interesting reading and was hoping more people would post tactical contributions rather than 'on your day' and '2009 prelim' blah blah blah.

Clearly Hawthorn have a couple of outstanding match winners with an X factor that Geelong is probably lacking at the moment so the way that they would beat Collingwood would definitely involve a game plan that supplies a heavy about of ball, but also protection from 2 vs 1 and congestion, any Hawthorn supporters want to comment on which players you think can help in that area? (decoys, forward tags, etc)

I wanted to have a crack at what Geelong need to do to get the W.

2 ruckman, Ottens/West combo, I know it is not a popular idea these days with the new sub rule but I think it is vital that when Ottens rests (and he should rest up forward as much as possible) West is there with 100% aggression towards the contest.

Ling playing a forward defensive role on Maxwell. Seriously, the guys rebounding and loose man/3rd man up skills are brilliant. This needs to be negated and Ling can do this but can also be dangerous himself. Against the speed of Collingwood he does not belong in the centre square unless they rotate him through to tag Ball when he is running in the middle.

Don't tag Swan, Pendles or Daisy. Be accountable but trust your own ability to win the contested possession.

SJ, Chappy, Varcoe rotating through the middle, mix up the Geelong forward match-ups to try and unsettle the Collingwood back 6.

Obviously give Scarlett the 3rd defender and try and maximise his run.

Wojo and Varcoe when playing on the half back line to take the game on, big risks but must be aggressive.

Play a similar press to the last time they met, be prepared for Collingwood to score some easy over the top goals on the turnover, but trust yourself to win the contested possession and clearances.

Milburn cannot be the sub, injection of speed is too important when the game is tiring (and it will come the GF) and his top pace is that of most of Collingwood's playing after 3 hard quarters.

Be aware that Collingwood will try and exploit their speed advantage and give the fast kids a chance against bigger name opponents. I know it was one contest, but when Menzel beat Swan one on one, these are the moments that will win games.

Before he goes on holidays get Ablett a wig and a new jumper and get him out there.

Just my 2 cents, that is a start, thoughts?

ps: I know Collingwood will not let most of these things happen, just thinking about how Geelong should start the game if it happens.

It will be interesting too see how Geelong play this week against them and if they will try a few surprise tactics.

The third man up clearing it away from the congestion worked to good effect for St Kilda and Brisbane. Will be interesting if they try that.

Or will Chris Scott want to keep his cards to his chest?

Play better football than them.

There's no secret mathematical or tactical formula. They play raw contested football and hard running ball movement. There isn't a whole lot of strategic depth to the way their team plays and that's probably their greatest strength - they can't be undone by flimsy tactics. You just need to do the same things better.

It's just a question of if anyone is able to do that.

AHA!
