How has Collingwood managed to be so successful since 2001 while Carlton and Essendon have not?

To those saying Collingwood has only won 1 since 2001, they've contended in 5, a few other prelims, play finals more often that not, they're around the mark, I'd say that's successful. They weren't that far away from winning 4 in the AFL era. 2 flags in the AFL era is still better than many. You've got to be in it to win it.

I'm genuinely curious. I'm a West Australian who grew up not really liking any Vic clubs (except maybe North a bit for some reason) so have no interest in VFL pissing matches. I used to dislike Carlton and Essendon more than Collingwood in the 90s but that reversed since those two haven't had much success, while Coll have.
It's CULTURE!!!

Carlton bought premierships with brown paper bags and have struggled to adjust to the modern landscape, they're a dinosaur.

Essendon has been captured at board level by idiots, they just continually make bad decisions. Appointing Scott is the best thing they've done in years and they might be turning it around at last.

While at Collingwood, nothing has changed. We've been competing at high levels since 1896. Culture!!!

So microwaving those memberships for 35 years was part of the pleasure/anticipation?

One talkback dude out of 100,000 members.

I bet even he savoured the dynasty flags with the deepest satisfaction.

Nice bit of Grand Final bacteria growing there. :)

Carlton and Essendon moved to Docklands. The comp is too even to give up a home ground advantage. Since 2001 the 4 MCG teams have won 9 flags, the 5 Docklands teams have won 1, and that was the Dogs miracle run in finals.
Excellent point. Not sure why a big club would want that disgusting ground as their home. Essendon took the bundles of $$ while Ian Collins sold Carlton down the river.

If you say the national competition started in 1987, each of Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton is on 2 premierships each.

Geelong, Brisbane, Hawthorn and Richmond are the 'successful' clubs since the 2000s
Sydney, West Coast and Collingwood are pretty good- one more win each would have done the trick.
Port OK

The rest are just not in it.

Thread about Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon and somehow a Richmond supporter has to make it all about them.

I swear there isn't a more insecure, pathetic supporter base on this website.

There is a lot of talk in this thread about the amount of premierships won since 2001, and typical bigfooty "mockery" effectively belittling anyone who hasn't won multiple premierships (in this case Collingwood), putting them on the same level as other clubs with one premiership in that time.

The reality is Collingwood has been far more successful than Essendon and Carlton over the last 20 years, and in fact have been more successful than most other clubs. Premierships in isolation are a lazy way of looking at things by people who have no interest in proper research, because it's easier and popular to be lazy and type one sentence responses. Dumb people do this.

Since 2002 the Pies have played:

36 finals matches for 18 wins. (Ess 3 wins 9 losses, Carl 2 wins, 4 losses)

5 Grand Finals for one win (Ess 0, Carl 0)

10 Preliminary Finals (Ess 0, Carl 0)

They've played in a Preliminary Final effectively every second year.

There are a number of reasons for this, but the wooden spoon Collingwood won in 1999, effectively acted as a reset for their club. They stopped celebrating the past, embraced a more professional outlook knowing that past success and club size won't help them, they stuck with their coaches and didn't make impulsive decisions based on occasional bad years.

With luck the Pies could have been premiers in 2002, 2007, and 2018 (in addition to 2010), had they kicked another goal or so in the Preliminary or Grand Finals in those 3 years.

Us playing 2 GFs in a week and not losing either is a *n miracle
It’s not a miracle. Just a sad reflection of St Kilda. Even the wobbles can’t lose a GF to them.

No salary cap charges for any premiership years mate so that's just made up here say.

Only 1995 was subject to a salary cap, while there are question marks over that one I was referring to earlier flags where you bought the best players in the country. Nothing wrong with that but it's a different landscape now and unfortunately your mob hasn't adjusted.

Nothing wrong with buying players, any club could have that was the landscape in those days and Carlton done it best and the question marks over 1995 are just that.
