How many of you like NRL aswell?

Generalisations such as 'haven for the brain dead.' That's just rubbish
Collective IQ of a spanner. Not every sports person is a genius, but by the same token poor interview skills dont necesarily mean you're an idiot.

That's a couple of points of bollocks

Sorry, but there's really no hatred of Union in Sydney, or indeed no particular rivalry. One is a sport played mainly by the private schools (and at an amateur level for a long time), the other by the masses. Never really has been either. Just as for the vast majority there is no hatred of AFL either.

As for the tabloid skew, the Herald Sun in Melbourne is no different - they both cater to the markets they exist in.
I find rugby union hilarious. A sport that, post 2003 world cup, was riding high, and talking about how dominant it was going to be. Went nowhere, a minority sport in the eastern suburbs and north shore of Sydney. A sport whose insistance on maintaining it's private school boys club is destroying its chances of competing at a junior level with rugby league. A sport whose most ardent supporters have been lamenting the fact that rugby league has, over the last couple of years, had a far better standard of onfield play. And a sport that has such a negative mindset, in Australia anyway, that it will never reach it's onfield potential.

I'm one of the people who doesn't mind the sport but surely you've got to concede there are an awful lot of thick guys that play league. I have only ever heard a couple of players able to do a good interview.

Such as the latest incident with Toby Thurstans. And today Willie Mason coming out and saying it should be OK for public figures like them to be outside the casino causing havoc blind drunk.

AFL has this too, e.g. Fev, but league does have an awful lot. I think its mainly because playing a game of league (at least in the country) is practically synonomous with having a piss-up.

There is a sizeable difference between the Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun not in terms of quantity of articles towards the respective heartland games but in terms of venom towards other codes, namely the AFL in the Daily Telegraph's case.

How many 'invasion' expansion stories has the DT run on AFL compared to HS on NRL. No fugging comparison, open your eyes.

News Ltd own 50% of the NRL.

Sack him immediately!

I despite the fact that News Limited owns 50% of NRL they are a venom to the sport using it for it's own financial gain. News Limited don't really care about the sport at all there willing to bag in at every turn, put it down, etc. I wish NRL had a independent commission like the AFL to get rid of this cancer on league.

All I want, is a mutual understanding and respect between sporting codes but that would never happen due to 'code wars' garbage by the Telegraph. Even though I'm NRL first, I respect other sport's skills and abilties and I'm sure there are some of this forum they agree with me.

Let's put some of the hatred aside as seen by some posts that people are indifferent but don't hate, and there are those who like it so let's all get along.

There are definately some idiots there. Mason for example. I think you'd see more idiots at the lower levels, because at the NRL level you have to have a bit of brains in the way you play or you get found out. But I dont think they're all complete morons, and I also dont think ability to give a good interview means you are necessarily a smart person. Speaking in public, just after having played a full game of footy is a bit different to conversing in everyday life.

Victorians dont seem to realise how much shit gets written in the telegraph about the game as well. It's just a terrible agenda driven newspaper, which isnt taken seriously by anyone sensible. Read the Herald for good sports coverage and you get a clearer view of the picture.

And in Sydney/NSW I'd say there is definately more hatred/rivalry between League and Union than there is AFL and League. AFL is more treated with indifference for the most part. The kind of game people that, apart from the core support, people might watch if its on but wont go out of their way to follow otherwise. There's obviously some dislike there, but there is alot of not caring, again outside of the eastern suburbs/north shore niche it seems to share with Union.

I think sport is crap, except AFL.

NRL players terrify me. They're just giant brainless thugs, with really ugly girlfriends. I mean, half of the players don't even know where they can take a shit at a hotel (hint- it's not in the corridor or on a table).

Jesus.

actually this thread with a couple of exceptions has veered between complimentary to ambivalent of RL, and especially complimentary of SOO. there has only been a couple of true league haters in over 100 posts, and many more people that have liked it than those that hate it.

i doubt the ratio would be anything close at LU.

+100

Yes there have been anti-League posts on this thread but the overall tone is almost positive. Many who have posted to defend League have been able to express themselves without imminent lash back.

If someone posted a thread called "How many of you like AFL aswell?" on LU, it would either go nowhere or turn into a 20 page bash of Australian Football and whining about TV rights. Any defenders of the AFL would be hounded out with boorish replies and be called Merkins.

So true, not the same for Union in Western Australia but the ARU's real "heartland" is the Sydney comp. I love Union but the S14 and Western Force do nothing for me. "Western Force" is the lamest name since Perth Glory, no connection to any icon of the State. The S14 is a passionless TV made league with no rivalries that can hold a candle to the AFL's or NRL's. I watch as much International Union as I can but the game is really suffering. It is as if the rules of Union haven't been able to keep up with game 15 years into professionalism. The game is faster and the players fitter, the constant penalties from the ruck and resetting of scrums is enough to make the casual observers turn off and that is exactly what is happening to Union in Australia.

I think a problem for many is that they judge another sport from the context of their own. While that may work some what for the 2 Rugbys. It isn't so logical for comparisons between League and Aussie Rules. In the AFL, i'm not expecting to see hits lie in the NRl because the ability to avade in the open is easier on the larger field. If in close, it's not appropriate for Rugby tackling below the knees else the ball would never get out. If watching the NRL, I'm not expecting total free flowing sport because it is too high risk and the forwards game is crucial to breaking down a defense.

Actually i said "haven for the terminally brain dead"...and you;re right its rubbish. Any fool could see the tautology in there.

In terms of League tho...i'd even watch that ****ta Gok try to squeeze some old fat chicks into tight ski pants than watch another game of RL. It really is that boring :thumbsu:

Most Aussie Rules fans don't feel threatened by the NRL because we all know the AFL is the bigger more popular code in this country, and the NRL doing well won't change that.

You find in Sydney a lot of NRL fans say they hate the AFL, because they feel threatened by it. It's almost like they "want" to like it but they feel that supporting it will somehow be a negative to the NRL so they can't bring themselves to do it. So pathetic.

I don't mind the NRL. I pretty much like any code of football.

Never met anyone who said they didn't like it because they were threatned by AFL.

I have found that Vctorians are insular even when they move interstate. They actually get offended if you don't follow AFL.

It's like the so called Sydney-Melbourne rivalry. It only exists in the minds of Victorians. Sydneysiders don't get caught up in the chest beating crap.

The funniest thing is Victorians saying "We have the Melbourne Cup!".

Who the else could have it

Firstly, I'm mainly a NRL follower first so to see the mix of vitriol, hatred, and anger in a AFL forum is no surprise. I'm sure if you were to post this same thread in regards to AFL on League Unlimited it would get the same type of response.

I find the hatred between the hardcore NRL & AFL fans hilarious because it serves no purpose it's only a sport so we all should just respect each others choices and get over it.

I only got into NRL last year when I moved into Townsville, before that I didn't care about any sport at all. I'm trying to get into AFL every time I could I come up short with one-sided matches that I switch off by the first half. Hopefully Collingwood vs Geelong despite being on delay can prove me wrong.
Wow thats crazy im the exact same from the other side used to only support NRL moved to Melbourne this year and started loving AFL before i didn't have the slghtest interest in it and now im the same cant watch an NRL game unless it's the Knights. And to people saying how much they hate league i always find it funny that the proffesionals of both sport have a really good appreciation for each other where as the supporters can seem really arrogant :S

Yup, in NSW there is a NSW/Qld loose rivalry based around the State of Origin - people in NSW couldn't give a toss about Vic. When I moved down to Melbourne about 6 years ago the first thing I noticed was the "Made in Melbourne" on various locally produced TV shows (which made me chuckle when you could see some of them were shot in and around Sydney). It's purely a one way rivalry.

When I first moved to Melbourne I thought it was bizzaro world when it came to sport.

Sydneysiders don't get caught up in the chest beating crap.

Just lost any credibility there mate .

I lived in Sydney for 22 years and learnt never to bring up the subject of AFL around Sydney males .I would never ask anybody if they were/would like to go and see an AFL match .I would simply state that I was off to see the Swans or East Sydney etc.I left it to people with an open mind to approach me .That way I introduced quite a number of people to Australian Football in Sydney who have gone on to be regulars or members .
Recently I was introduced to a young Sydney relative now resident in Perth .
One of the first things he says is that he "hates AFL" .Wow that's going to get you far in an AFL state .HTF can somebody say they "hate" a sport when they haven't even seen the game as he hadn't .Where did he get that attitude from - the media or his rl mates ?

.

Rugby leaguers aren’t exactly going to come out and say they feel threaten by a sport. It goes against the mucho image so prevalent in Rugby league. So they say it's a game for ****s, tight shorts, singlets etc. see the theme.

The only time I hear about the Melbourne Sydney rivalry is when someone from Sydney tells me it's only Victorians who care for the rivalry.

Just like some Aussie Rules supporters (just read this thread btw) say that League is a game for morons, braindead buffons, meatheads, etc. See the theme?

We all got different taste in sports regardless of which state we live in, we have a diverse sporting landscape and we should embrace it. Who cares about media beat ups and fabrications if you enjoy one or multiple sports like myself (NRL/Union/Football/slowly AFL) don't let any immature, petty, silly remarks hinder you from watching, following, and playing those sports.

In this thread, which is now 10 pages, there is but a handful of posters who have stooped to that level. The opposite thread on LU would have every second post filled with homophobic ramblings.
