Not really, we qualified to get onto the international stage, won a single match and then got destroyed.

Think about it like the world cup. We qualified for the world cup so we got to attend, but then we were knocked out super early.

There's a bit more to ROI than having a team make the big finals once in half a decade before dispandment of the league. We've dumped footy cash into this failed venture for years, nothing is more certain. How else would you explain a 'tier 1' club recruiting L Platers into almost all key roles.

Agreed, amazing footballer and an out there thinking football brain on field, always thought he would have been an interesting coach with his thoughts actually about the game had he chosen that path rather than the different polarising paths he took.

Just to go back to his playing career and now that he’s finished up we can forget his post playing life, but how is he not in the Australian Football Hall of Fame?

Especially considering some others who have gone in before him, Bickley from our club for one and plenty of other contemporaries from his era that he has a better record then and was a much better player then.

• 1993 as a centre half back/centre half forward
• 1998 as a swing man/half back flanker

Think he’s a victim of that ability to play so many roles, rank him after Modra as the most freakishly gifted player we had on field in that era and he did it on a much more consistent basis than Modra who many see with Rose coloured glasses now when it comes to his ability of turning up game after game during that era, it’s just that Smart had to play as a centre half back/full-back in the 90s on many occasions that meant his high flying ability, athleticism and freakish goal sense wasn’t on show a lot of the time.

Also an amazing State player for South Australia was always among the bests having to play in defence on those amazing Victorian forwards, Garry Lyon mentioned during the recall of the ‘94 state match earlier in the year how he got destroyed by him in the first half and asked how he wasn’t in the hall of fame as well. Is really the only Crows player that’s not in the hall of fame that has a more than worthy record and playing ability that’s not in.

Prime example of how good he was as a player is this win in 1995 without Modra at Waverley when Smart has 28 touches and also kicks 3 goals after he’s moved forward in the 3rd quarter
