I wonder what Graf's record would have looked like if not for the Seles incident. Seles seemed to be gaining Graf's measure at the time. But those figures do give me pause for thought.
We can ask the same question about Rod Laver after he went professional? For five years, at his peak, he could not compete in any of the majors. He won the Grand Slam in 1962 and again in 1969, one year after the tournaments were declared 'Open'. Laver finished with 11 Grand Slam titles. Who knows what he might have finished with? And he did what no one else has done since - win 2 X Grand Slams

Laver isn’t even in the conversation for mine. Think about who was playing tennis in his era.

From 1935-1977 the Australian open was won by an Aussie or a Yank … that’s it.

From 1937-1971 the US Open was won by an Aussie or a Yank every year bar 2.

From 1937-1972 was won by an Aussie or a Yank every year bar 3.

(Even the French from 1938 to 1969 was won by an Aussie or Yank every year bar 9).

So from 1938 to 1969, 3 of the majors were won by an Aussie or Yank except for 5 x occasions (out of about 80 - war impacted)

Compare that to for example 1990 to 2022. … all
Majors:

Germany: 3
Czech: 3
Ecuador: 1
Sweden: 3
USA:26
Spain: 28
Austria: 1
Russia: 4
Netherlands: 1
Brazil: 3
Aust: 4
Switzerland: 23
Argentina: 2
Serbia: 22
Uk: 3
Croatia: 1
Austria: 1

Even if you said 100 were won by Switzerland, USA, Serbia and Spain, there’s still another 30 won by 13 other countries.

So Laver was really seriously competing with Australians and Americans…. that’s it. Nowadays players are competing with players from all corners of the globe.

Women’s tennis didn’t really go ‘global’ until the late 1980’s, with a similar dominance of Aust/US.

In the last 5-years alone for the women, major winners have come from 12 x countries.

From 1946-1986, women’s major winners came from 9 x countries. Of the 160 or so majors, about 133 were won by USA or Aust (UK won 9).

So winning a tennis major is a lot harder now by sheer weight of numbers of how many people you need to beat globally. (Yes, I accept a much higher portion of Aust and Yanks played tennis yesteryear, with many now taking up other sports).

Talking about GOATs of their respective sport, and a bit about a bloke named Dusty who sits outside the top 50 of his. :smilev1:

The vast majority of people disagree with this. But if your so confident give me a list of where Dusty sits all time. I also wanna see the top 100 from the Jack the Godfather guy. This is gonna be good.

o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O
He was playing against the legends of the game....on grass and clay.
2 Grand Slams....and he's not even in the conversation?
If he hadn't gone professional (and inspired the youth of all those other countries to play tennis), he'd have won 30 Slam titles.

I think you'll find the vast majority of non-Richmond agree with his view that Martin is somewhere around (just inside or just outside) the top 50 all-time.

Frig me, if you can't accept Ablett, Franklin and Judd since the turn of the century alone are clearly superior to Martin, you clearly don't watch other teams play football.

Then there are a further 6 to 8 players where there is certainly a case for them to be rated ahead of Martin - N. Riewoldt, Fyfe, S. Mitchell, Pendlebury, Selwood, Hodge, Dangerfield, etc.

This is after the previous generation of players - Carey, Voss, Hird, Buckley, Riccuito, Lloyd, Goodes, R. Harvey, etc.

Before them there was Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett Snr, Williams, Silvagni.

So I've just named 12 players since the mid 1980's alone who are undisputedly ahead of Martin, a further 11 from the mid 1990's who have a reasonable case to be rated ahead of Martin, and footy has been going for over 120 years...

Are you joking? Hodge, Selwood, Fyfe 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Nick Riewoldt rates Dusty above himself man.

You even rating Dusty in H&A as 85/100 and in finals 97/100. Wtf are these guys? 95 plus in both? 🤦‍♂️

Find me articles of all these guys above Dusty. I’ll take it all back if you do. Good luck chief.

Also Dusty, Judd, GAJ, Buddy are all in the same tier. Most people believe that. The AFL media certainly do. Idk where you get your info from.

Top 50 is pushing it. There's been a plethora of far better players.

Those posters don’t have that type of capability, they are trolls.
There has been plenty of discussion from many posters re: which players from the past are ahead of Martin, and why.

If you guys are in violent disagreement, feel free to post your rankings. I'm particularly interested in the players ranked just under Martin, if he is deemed worthy of top 10 or 20 all time...

As mentioned previously, we have all given lists. How many times do you want us to post them? (I just posted a quick list for the second time).

Where is your list? Let's go.

2. Lockett
3. Carey
4. Snr
5. Buddy
6. Judd
7. GAJ
8. Dusty (for now)
9. Diesel
10. Voss

Now you cause I haven’t seen a 1-50 list from you. Send me a link if you’ve done it already.
