Geelong 2008 would be a bigger 'waste' so of course the answer is no.

Having said that, if Hawthorn were the lose the Prelim or the Grand Final, theyll more than likely learn a lot from it and be in an even better position to win it next year, just as Geelong did in 2009. Therefore the season won't have been a waste at all. You can't expect to win a premiership, they're very hard to win. I'm sure the Hawks know that though.

In fairness I get the impression that's what 2011 was about.

Hawthorn can get undone a variety of different ways, for example we could lose our 2 most important players to suspension tonight.

A wet Preliminary Final and/or Grand Final wouldn't do our causes any better against Sydney, Adelaide or Fremantle

Absolutely...

Wouldn't be the biggest single season choke ever, but the Hawks have 3 seasons of self- proclaimed excellence squandered preceding them.

2008 was pegged as the start of a dynasty.

3 years of un- fulfilled promise and shallow excuses later, and the Hawks have finally started living up to the hype.

Won the minor premiership, won more games than anyone else, had a % and avg. winning margin greater than Geelong in 2007, an attack noone can contain, the best player in the competition etc.

Premiership favourites for 2012 from the moment the final siren went in last years Preliminary Final loss v. Collingwood.

Anything but a GF win is failure... again.
Viewed in this context, yes the OP has a point.

If we fail to win it, it will be disappointing, of course, but we've already exceeded everyone's expectations (including our own) for the year and proved the naysayers wrong, so we'll be very happy with however far we go this year. Same goes for Adelaide, West Coast, or Freo I think. But Hawks..... big expectations.

While it could certainly be argued that Hawthorn were unlucky to lose the prelim last year, I think that most people would agree that the two teams that played in the Grand Final last year were the 2 best teams.

This year is different in that Hawthorn are now considered the best team in the competition and many view it as their premiership to lose. Obviously a variety of factors could get in the way of this - that'll be the case for the strongest team every single year.

Teams tend to approach games against the top team/ teams differently. Friday night was a good example of this with the physical approach Collingwood employed. If the Hawks were to get players suspended tonight and subsequently lose a PF/ GF because of this, they would learn from it and those same players would be less likely to repeat their actions in the finals in upcoming years. It would be a massive disappointment no doubt, but it wouldnt be a complete waste as they would still get lessons out of it.

Agree, quite clearly we were with West Coast on the 2nd band of clubs last year.

My point was, my impression is that the lessons learnt from the 2011 campaign will leave them in good sted for 2012 in much the same way 2007 was a launching pad for 2008. In much the same way that the Swans have transformed their team with personnel and tactical changes since 2008, Hawthorn have made substantial changes themselves.

Hawthorn's got a pretty good history of recent memory of winning Grand Finals if we make them as opposed to say Collingwood or St Kilda who are forever reminded of how many losses they've had, so I would think that the players (and in the end that's what matters) would be quitly optimistic if we made it. It also helps that 2/3 of the team that gets there have already won a premiership so they'd know what it takes.

Anyway, we're a long way from there yet, gotta beat Freo/Adelaide first

Not at all . . . Hawthorn are a lot further ahead than we expected them to be after they brought in 5 or 6 new players last year. Breust, Shiels, Suckling etc have performed well ahead of time. Really, this is a free hit.

I also don't think if Hawthorn lose that it would be a choke. Choking is more about the way you lose, rather than the loss itself. That's why Geelong's game against Fremantle, particularly the first quarter, was one of the biggest choke jobs I've seen.

They didn't proclaim they were excellent in any of those years.

I don't think there were any shallow excuses in 20009. Every player bar Roughead and maybe Sam Mitchell sustained some sort of injury or didn't have a proper pre-season due to injury. We had at least two premature retirments due to injury. It was a horror run.

From then on we slowly rebuilt the side and have improved every year since.

So really it's been a typical steady climb up the ladder again, not unlike the rise from 2005-2008.

I agree that its never easy but Freo/Adelaide will be exhausted next week... Be far tougher for them than you (obviously).

Time will reveal if you choke then I guess...

Leave 1998 out of this...:p
I remember the Coodabeens' excellent take on the Adelaide club song, going something like:
'We're the pride of South Australia, we're the mighty Adelaide Crows
We thought we went close once or twice then we jagged two in a row...'

I thought the response would have been: Don't Care, Won Flag!

The flag is all that matters
Port Adelaide 2002-03 finished on top both years and failed to make the GF either time. Were white hot favourites in the QF both times and got rolled. Has to be them.

2008 or 2009 weren't that much of a surprise to me tbh.
2008 was a big surprise to me. But not 2009...

Me, I think the biggest waste I have seen this year is Adelaide wasting it's top 2 home final. Should have given it to someone worthy, rather than throwing your home final down the drain. Bay 13 response for a thread that was clearly better suited to Bay 13.

I agree that was a waste. But please dont deflect from the thread topic...:thumbsu:

Why doesn't anyone acknowledge how good Sydney are?

Seriously, Hawthorn only got over them in the last couple minutes 3 weeks ago... Seriously good side with guns on almost every line.

But if someone like Adelaide or Collingwood were to take it out I would be pretty underwhelmed.

Why if Adelaide are gonna take it out they would have to travel to the G and beat the 'self proclaimed' 'invincible Hawks'!

Your side doesn't even deserve to be top 4. Only there because the AFL assisted you. Freo should beat you this weekend. Get out of here clown.
