People called Mark Williams a choker, but I think you've got to say that Lyon and Hardwick are choking much worse atm. But then, Fremantle finishing first didn't really reflect their form this year. Apparently they had a very tough preseason with the goal of starting the season with a blaze of glory and hooking onto that top spot. Then from round 11 onwards (1 round after their first loss), they were able to coast by thanks to having a lot of games against eventual bottom-10 clubs.

Food for thought: if Houli hadn't given Freo the Richmond game but the other results remained the same throughout the year, Freo would've finished fifth. That's likely a more accurate representation of the form of the teams over the year.

I think he would be very good at bringing a bottom 4 club up the ladder. I think he should dedicate himself to that.

When has he shown he could do that?

The Saints team he took over had played finals 3 years running, including 2 prelims. While the Freo list was thereabouts and primed for a charge at the top 4.

He hasnt had to build a list in his time as a head coach in the AFL. The squads were ready to go and he was brought in to finish the job.

Freo have a shocking bottom half of their list. Blowing these chances is nowhere near as bad as his failures at st. kilda. What he has done with a first 22 that includes lee spurr, chris mayne and matt de boer is incredible.

They have some good young talent running around at Peel. They need to introduce some of them to AFL and move on some of their low-skilled plodders. But knowing Ross Lyons, Crowley will be back and Lachie Weller will spend next year at Peel.

Freo and St Kilda under Lyon were similar under so many ways. And I am not necessarily talking about their defensive pressure or whatnot, but just at how good they were at getting there, but being unable to take advantage of that. The Saints team of 09 was God-like and to this day I think back and wonder how they lost. Surely questions have to be asked about his finals record at both Dockers and the Saints. I don't know, I actually feel sorry for Freo supporters because like Richmond, they keep promising this potential but can't quite deliver.

You don't sack him, but even Ross now realises he needs to adapt and actually bring in players in this off-season.

Dawson, sherridan, sutcliffe, suban. So vanilla.

I'd actually go to my recruiting department, list manager and marketing department first being unable to lure that extra key forward they needed whilst being in the window.
You can understand why they're after Cam McCarthy. How bad must Apeness be, if he's being kept out of the side by Taberner.

Neither is fit to lace Pav's boots, even in his current form.

Just get some quality tall forwards and become more attacking.

There was not a lot in that game. Game plan stood up well to a very good team. Poor execution under enormous pressure compared to composure and efficiency.

I wonder if Pav and/or McPharlin call it a day. Both probably should.

I ask Ross Lyon to come into my office tomorrow morning. And I sack him.

Genuine windows of premiership contention are so rare. You can go decades without being in one. Fremantle have to be ruthless to make the most of their current window. And if you're being ruthless you have to acknowledge that Ross Lyon doesn't have what it takes to win a premiership. He has big positives. But going all the way, winning 3 games in September, he can't do that. Year in and year out he has fallen short.

Fremantle have to go to someone else. I think a change would also be best for Lyon. If his ego lets him admit it. His style of coaching would work best in bringing a consistent winning culture to bottom clubs. I think he would be very good at bringing a bottom 4 club up the ladder. I think he should dedicate himself to that.
This is why you'll never be CEO of anything except your dreams.

They've 5 years to do that and watched some of the great forwards of our generation go in and out of contract. This is how he coaches and sets up his team nothing will change. Get rid of him.

Freo will make top 4 next year.

Maybe. I just feel like teams are working them out. Their second half of the year was quite ordinary and it quickly became obvious how much they depended on Fyfe and Walters. Sandilands isn't as dominant as he used to be; not because his abilities have gotten worst, but because the opposition have worked out how to counter the obscene amount of taps he is able to give off.
