The game plan didn't cost them the game tonight-Freo's lack of a forward line did. If it wasn't for Ross' game plan Freo would have lost by more.
People say Freo don't score enough (which is true) but it comes back to their forward line.
Is it really just the forward line, though? If they were getting it into the fwd line time after time after time and not scoring, I'd agree. I'm not sure if that is the case, though.

It seems to me that they don't even give the forwards they have enough opportunities. They can shut teams down, but when they get possession, they don't really have the drive or the set-up to get it quickly into the 50. They managed it for their first two goals tonight, but when that was taken away from them, they had nothing.

Its the same thing. He has four years to do something about his fwd line and has done nothing about it.

In 2014 the LOWEST winning margin in nine finals was 93. Average winning score was 110.
He hasn't sorted out his forward line for the same reason we didn't in 2005/06. Trading for a good forward would require a good trade in return. Probably a midfielder. Which player would he sacrifice?

Also take into account that this year Pav has been on his last legs, Mayne has become a spud and Ballantyne missed numerous weeks through injury. He didn't have these issues in previous seasons.

The four Ross Lyon years would be Fremantles best years for supporters enjoyment of the club on a week to week basis.

All nine years he has coached (both Freo and Saints) he has had more wins than losses and the lowest number of wins he has had at Freo is 15 wins.

Bloke is doing too much right that you would want to change around him to find the big prize that seems to just elude him.

Can't see why people are saying its Lyons fault. Against us in 09 it was neck and neck with 5 mins left. In 2010 if they didn't get a shit bounce they win the flag. 2013 terrible goal kicking early cost them from being in the game.
Tonight terrible kicks going forward that favoured defenders, terrible goal kicking, basic skill errors and shitty umpiring cost them the game. You can't coach basic errors.

Milne should have done better in 2010.

In presser he was saying lack of tall forwards were the problem but inside 50's weren't an issue.
41 I50's in both finals says otherwise. Not going to kick a score with those numbers.

I was at the game tonight. The Hawks often made the right decision when moving the ball. Freo often made the wrong decision when moving the ball.

The Sheridan dropped mark was huge. If you were there, then you would have understood that the crowd were really rallying Freo, and the Hawks players were losing the plot, but then after that goal it was just frustration.

You can't blame Ross for when players make bad decisions, but you can blame him for picking these players. If you pick shit, then expect shit.

The guy takes an average list to the top of the table and to a prelim, loses a premiership by a bounce of the ball, and another one by under a kick, whilst the other one his team kicked inaccurately and could have won if they kicked straight. What more does a man have to do, this thread is terrible

Both Saints and Freo had healthy lists that were ready to challenge when he got there.
Their list isn't as good as Hawthorns. They didn't lose because of Lyon. His game plan may be boring but he's one of the leagues better coaches

Would you want him putting together a team of defensive role players at the dogs? I'm sure Zac Dawson would be a great addition to your backline.

Yes luck has a role to play in finals, if Riewoldt didn't fall down as if shot in the 09 Prelim they probably wouldn't have won that week to get into the GF in the first place (but I'm biased), and they only got close in 2010 thanks to Hayes and Goddard carrying the whole team on their backs.

But as for this year, I knew they were gone in Round 22 against Melbourne. Yes they won by 50 points (who doesn't beat Melbourne by 50 these days?) but the decision making and skill errors turned me off (they picked out Daniel Cross about 15 times, no wonder he got 45 touches that day). But it also confirmed to me that carrying the likes of Griffen (no better than Clarke who was no better than Apeness or any of the other young back ups to Sandi), Mzungu (poor man's Heretier Lumumba) and an out of form Barlow was going to cost them in the end. Plus he obviously reasoned that Fyfe on one leg was going to be a better fit than anyone else when most other teams would have gone for the fit player. There are some hard decisions to be made on players with McPharlin 95% certain to be retired and Pav I'd suggest 70/30 finished, but will Ross want to let go?

Then they are paying a lot of spuds more than they are worth

ross lyon rooted our salary cap to the point it required constant communication with the AFL as we were in breach of the cap. emma quayle covers it really well in the draft

absolutely reckless and beyond incompetent

If i was the CEO i would ask security to escourt Mayne and Tabener out of the building and demand a proper key forward rather then the cold body of Pavlich.

I mean Walters is a great player, But he's hardly someone you build a forwardline with and run it through him

They have a great young midfield comming through, Just not a lot of KPP's.

Yeah Ross Lyon is trhe one signing players to $$$

You absolute muppet.

As popular as it might be to hate him, Ross has worked a miracle to get this list competing. Looking at the team out there tonight, they have a lot of average players. Not gonna win a premiership with this group IMO.

Agreed, although he needs to change his tune and realize he needs to create a side that scores goals in big enough quantity to be realistic chance of winning game on grand final day. If he keeps sticking to the game style to clog up the opposing side and simply hope they score more he will continue to create sides that win some games and make finals but never got what it takes to win premierships. It is almost the opposite to Malcolm Bight in late 80's and early 90's when he had Geelong sides so hellbent on scoring so freely they could not stop other good sides beating them in grand finals. Geelong made 4 grand finals with likes of Gary Ablett lead forward line. The most talented player ever yet still never won a premiership with that amazingly high scoring team.

He tweaked his coaching style a little and won two flags in later 90's with Crows.
Probably Ross Lyon needs to tweak his gameplans a lot but he still does a lot right. He just needs to work on the parts that clearly are not going to lead to premierships. Some of those ordinary players are out there tonight he thinks they will help his side and end goal of flags but in reality they will not. Ross Lyon needs to have a good hard look in mirror and be honest with himself, investing time and energy into Zaz Dawson types for multiple years is likely to only ends in tears. Time to move on and invest in more class players and clear the decks of the Dawson types which a lot of his teams seem to have quite a few. Negative style football will only get you so far. Time to gain some serious polish, dare and class in the list and gameplan.
Harley Bennell might be just one example of class of player they need more of.
