I agree Melbourne will be determined to reinforce the fact that they are NOT tanking and if they aren't then they'd be pretty pissed off at losing after the siren last week.

Or it could be that perhaps the Melbourne players will be shattered and mentally weak, after a loss like that to Richmond.
I could make a case either way. The game could go either way. A hard game to tip.

Agreed. Also with Simpson and Harding going out and Sylvia, Morton and possibly Mclean coming back in it could go either way. Guess it all comes down to whether if Miller can beat the Roos inform ruckmen.

Mate, where is ben cunnington? don't u rate him?

Would be extremely surprised if Dylan McNeil went that high.

EDIT: And why on earth would we take Fitzpatrick?

Midfield looks still looks strong and have a bit of depth with juniors in Selwood and Varcoe, Down back with Taylor comming along, Up forward Hawkins, however he looks a tad slow at times, Fitzpatrick could become a nimble CHF or even Ruck, Ottens is great but on the other side of his career, Mumford goes alright and West looks ok, but no genuine star ruckmen, so why not get something with quite a bit of upside (one of the top 3 bigmen of this draft in my eyes!) as oposed to a good midfielder (good because the guns have gone already) either way its a toss of the coin if they produce the goods or not.

Fair enough mate, but you've ignored some players there. Although they're both currently injured we've got two key forwards with plenty of promise on the list in Scott Simpson and Mitch Brown; both look to be mobile CHFs. We've also got Dan McKenna, who can play both ends but is on the small side for a 'true' KPP. As for rucks - we've got five on the list (Ottens, Mumford, Blake, West and Dawson Simpson) and the coaches seem perfectly happy with our current set up.

A future elite ruckman will probably be a priority in a year or two when Ottens retires, but there's other more pressing priorities. We've got the grand total of one future KPD in the works in Tom Gillies; both McKenna and Laidler will probably end up being third tall types. We've also got a serious lack of elite midfielders in the pipeline - only Ranga really counts and he's yet to actually get out onto the park for a proper VFL game. Given that I'd think it was way more likely for us to pick up a KPD or midfielder than a forward/ruck.

yes i feel that lucas has been very underrated especially on bigfooty lately

i would be very excited if we got any of trengove, morabito, lucas or butcher

Just a question how do people rate the running ability of the following:

- Stevens, Cunnington, Martin.

Are they all slower inside types, or is any of them capable of playing on a wing and being an endurence runner like a Bartel or Masten.

Some of the WA boys are pressing their claims in the WAFL (League). Quite impressive how many are playing league:

K Lucas - 28 possessions, 7 tackles
D Swallow (not elegible)- 26 possessions, 4 tackles, 2 goals
J Darling (not elegible) - 8 possessions, 4 tackles, 2 goals (after 6 goals last week)
B Matera (not elegible) - 16 possessions, 5 tackles, 1 goal 3 behinds
B Shephard - 13 kicks, 5 tackles, 2 goals
M Duncan - 14 possessions, 5 tackles, 3 goals

Some other WA U18 squad members getting game time in the WAFL are:

  • A Morabito (Peel - bye)
  • L Foster (E Freo)
  • C Garlett (Swans)
  • Blayne Wilson (Peel - bye)
Young Nat Fyfe - 34 possessions and 8 goals in the colts.
Joel Houghton - 7 goals 6 behinds in the colts (good size at 195)

Its interesting that despite WA's dominance of the U18 champs they only found room for 2 WA players in the first round and quite a few from VM and VC.

That probably reflects that a few of the best performed Sandgropers were either underaged (Swallow, Darling - would be top 10, and Matera) or on the smallish side (e.g. Fyfe, Colyer).

Should be some good bargains in the second round with guys like Duncan, Luff, Hutchings and co still available. Interesting that guys like Duncan and Luff, who performed really well and is a good size, are not rated higher.

opps.. i posted the TAC Cup Future Stars phantom draft and just realised there is another section for this.. sorry!

It may also reflect the "Go Home" factor from Melb clubs
