News Impact of COVID-19 on season 2020 and beyond

There’s a thread on the main board. I got my first infraction on it 😂

A lot of people not taking COVID-19 seriously at all. The government should be shutting the borders and quarantining everyone now while there’s a chance of containing it.

Personally, Footy is the least of my concerns. I have a pregnant wife with high blood pressure, ageing parents and a very vulnerable 90 year old Nana. Plus I’m an account manager for a very large company and meet with over 50 people per week on their sites. At this stage the message has been business as usual.

In regards to footy, I predict a player will test positive within 7-14 days and the season will be postponed. It’s inevitable to happen at some point.
At the risk of getting attacked on here, there is a very real argument to say it’s already here and quarantining everyone is going to cause more harm than good.

There has to be a very careful line tread here. You can shut everything down for only so long before the treatment becomes much much worse than the disease.

I’m going to be brutally honest and put a disclaimer that I don’t know the right answer (I doubt anyone really does) but at some point in the next year I feel the world is going to have to make a choice between continued economic annihilation and the lives of many sick and elderly

agreed at some point you have to consider that killing the economy is not going to help anyone, particularly the elderly who rely on the young people to earn money and pay taxes etc.

Yep. And I don't think it needs to be either or. We deal with the same thing every year with the flu. What we know is one size does not fit all. Making all your policies cater to the lowest common denominator (in this case the elderly and immune compromised) is simplistic. If we put in measures to protect the most vulnerable group (eg by slowing the spread to not overwhelm the health system) and get the timing right so it flows through the broader community at a more controlled rate then it really shouldn't be having the side effects (like economically) long term that we are seeing right at this moment in time. We have to accept some people aren't going to survive just like we accept some people aren't going to survive the seasonal flu. I'm still not quite sure why more hasn't been done with public health notices (that are relatively cheap) - like most diseases, prevention is best tackled with the actions of individuals - we need to educate people what they should be doing in times like these - avoid the panic and slow the spread without relying on top down bandaids.

Shutting the borders completing would have only worked if they did it back in Jan before anyone here had it. BUT, we would need to keep them closed until a vaccine was available for all of our citizens, otherwise as soon as the borders reopened, large numbers of people with the virus in their systems would have entered our shores resulting in a large and fast infection rate anyway (think Captain Cook and crew visiting the islands 230 years ago). PLUS, we only have fuel stocks here in WA to last us 2 weeks at current rates, let alone all the other products we import that we need. Can you imagine everything here grinding to a halt for 12-18 months with family members stuck overseas? Can't stop it coming in unless you stop all forms of transport to our shores. Don't think this would be a reality that could work.

In the absence of a vaccine, better we just slow the spread so our health profs can treat those requiring treatment and we move on with our lives so the system doesn't shut down any worse than it already has. I for one just bought an Oodie, ugg boots, and a disney+ subscription to go with Netflix and Stan rather than go out as much as I normally do, and told my aging parents to self isolate at home as much as possible and I'll drop food around as they need it. Stay safe and well people and have a good weekend at home with family and friends.

Morrison: "We are recommending for people not to attend gatherings of 500+ people"

Morrison: "I'll be going to the rugby on Saturday"

Has he learnt nothing from his holidaying while the country burned stupidity?

You have to practice what you are preaching you idiot!

MERS and SARS are Corona viruses and they have no vaccines, despite us knowing about them for a decade or longer.
exactly. One may never come. So shutting ourselves off on this island for...ever? is not a realistic possibility.

btw, thank goodness MERS has loss transmission rates or half of us on this planet would be now dead.

I just don't see the point in starting the season up. The moment any player gets it you are basically forced into quarantining whole teams. There's no way the AFL can maintain fairness when they're dealing with teams being forced to take 2-3 week breaks.

I suppose you can just go into it with the mindset of getting as many games as possible but it'd end up a very, very weird season.

as an aside I rate "people" (mostly new south welshmen and Queenslanders obviously) referring to rugby as "footy" 0/10. it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever and Gil needs to stamp it out.

wrong thread. That's safely in the Politics one and I for one have gone out of my way to avoid that thread (which was set up exactly for this reason - to keep all that stuff in one spot) so I don't want to see that kind of stuff outside infecting other threads.

Honestly I think it will be good for Australia to have something, anything. Cancelling the season is going to have a real effect on many people who have a lot invested emotionally into their club. I'm not concerned about fairness, just watching games will do me. If their is a premier, it will forever have an asterisk next to it

True although what the Oz govt is recommending has potentially far more impact on the season than a lot of the posts on this thread ;) Seems weird that it is from Monday? Some may say convenient :) Will be interesting what they decide with AFLW this weekend.

Please feel free to move that other post and this one mods. Morrison is a moron! (to make it clear this should be in the other thread :p Sorry I upset any Lib supporters in here)

Are you immune to it after having it ?
My understanding is that the re-catch rate is 5-10% in China but those figures arent really believed by anyone outside China - because China is full of it.

It seems, at a minimum, you are very very unlikely to get it again once you catch it

The AFL has a $60m emergency fund, this isn't enough to save itself.

The season needs to go ahead with no crowds until herd immunity is reached.

Society cannot come to a standstill or the economy will collapse.

The logistics of playing in empty stadiums is difficult to fathom.
Stadium rental charges are huge. Without patron dollars who pays?
Vic clubs who have seatless memberships and rellys on the income of fans paying the extra dollars for a seat on game day will suffer.
