Dubai - Powerful India will oppose any moves to throw strife-torn Zimbabwe out of world cricket and is counting on the rest of the Asian bloc for support, a senior official said on Monday.
"There is no reason to remove Zimbabwe," Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah said as the International Cricket Council (ICC) debated the African country's future at its annual meetings here. Cricket boards of South Africa and England last week suspended bilateral ties with Zimbabwe in protest at the deteriorating political situation in Harare, where Robert Mugabe has been controversially re-elected as president.

What a disgrace!

Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies an New Zealand can refuse to play them and India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka can play them. Easy solution.

I wonder why this is. For what reason does India have to support Zimbabwe. They are not even at a competitive level any more.
Because the Zimmers will then vote for whatever India want them to vote for. For the cost of a few 100,000 lives India gets two votes.

just out of interest, how many of you who are supporting the boycott of Zimbabwe due to political/human rights abuses would also support a boycott of the Beijing Olympics?

It is not just that which is the issue though.

The Zimbabwean cricket administration is corrupt and is little more than an extension of the government. Further, the Zimbabwean national team itself has been purged of so much talent (because of the political situation) that it is barely competitive on the international scene any longer.

Put the three together and there is more than enough justification for Zimbabwe to take a `rest` from international cricket until things are resolved.

They were a pretty good team quite a while ago.

But the Indians are trying to keep them in.

If they stay there, then England will lose its rights for the T20 WC because they are denying visas to all Zimbabweans.

BCCI are racist. Pure and simple.

In the 70's and 80's the BCCI and the rest of the the cricket world rightfully ostrisized the hated aparteid mongrels in SA.

Like the rest of the cricket world the Indians helped to bring pressure and eventually the end of the minority racist regime.

But now they want to support the hated Mugabe regime that systematically discriminated against farmers because of their race and rigs elections and destroys opposition through violence.

yeah good one BCCI scum.

F##king racist pigs.

Ok, fine - they are all good points.

But then why do countries who want to boycott Zimbabwe try to make it seem like a political issue then?:
Cricket boards of South Africa and England last week suspended bilateral ties with Zimbabwe in protest at the deteriorating political situation in Harare, where Robert Mugabe has been controversially re-elected as president.

Surely their cause would gain a lot more traction if they tried to make it as non-political issue as possible, because then that would negate that counter argument of 'sport and politics shouldn't mix' that pro-Zimbabwe camps are putting out.

In response to your post, how about if I typed this:
Australians support human rights abuses. Pure and simple.

In the 70's and 80's Australians and the rest of the world rightfully ostrisized the hated human rights abusing mongrels in China.

But now they want to support the hated Chinese regime who systematically oppress, kill and torture Tibetans because of their beliefs and rigs elections and destroys opposition through violence. In addition, they also support oppressive regimes in countries such as North Korea, Darfur and Burma

yeah good one scum.

F##king pigs.
Before you have a go at me, I am an Australian myself and I don't believe the above - I typed it as an example of how anyone can make those kind of statements and also to point our hypocrisy with respect to China vs Zimbabwe.

Are our ethics and morality totally influenced by money and economic benefits? in which, case, doesn't that undermine taking an ethical stance in the first place? what value does an ethical stance have, if it can be bought?

For that matter China also supplies arms to Zimbabwe. But Zimbabwe is doing to its people exactly what it criticised the apartheid government in SA of doing.
