Surely if onfield umpires can't be from one of the countries then the same should apply for match referees.

England have a right to be spewing about that. The only way this is like for like is because one cricketer was replaced by another. A specialist batsman being replaced by a bowler isn't like for like.

I doubt any of us would have expected Pat Cummins to do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.
It's bullshit.
The logical next step now is the rule needs to change so that each player in the XI has a nominated sub (one sub can cover many in the XI) at the start of the game that gets referee signoff.
Then you can't factor in the state of the game to make tactical choices.
In reality, the subs should be:
1 batter.
1 keeper
1 seamer
1 spinner
All rounder is tricky. You could nominate another all rounder or you could go with bat/bowl. Depending on when injury occurs this decision could become quite lucky/unlucky.
With bowlers you could argue left/right/finger/wrist but that would be overdoing it.

To be fair though, the lack of foresight and half arsedness in creating this rule is at an AFL level.
