It’s grim but…

Prior to the AFLW such a stat wasn’t possible as the AFL clubs and their respective reserves sides played less than 50 games combined

The AFLW played two seasons this year so take either of those out and the stat doesn’t exist

But yes, it’s a ******* horrible look
Fair to say that our reserves team is also being deliberately tanked by the WAFL (as well as losing meaningful players this year to plug constant holes in our AFL team).

🙄
AFL veteran Shaun Smith, who in 2020 received a landmark $1.4m insurance payout for concussions he suffered while playing, said he believes that a historic lack of action on concussion by the AFL has left “many guys who are seriously broken”.

Smith said he could not accept the AFL’s apology in the wake of the McCrory review.

“I find the AFL very reactive, always defending themselves as opposed to being the ones to first recognise the issues they have.”

The AFL should be doing more on concussion no doubt but I sometimes think it’s a bit rich when former players start pointing the finger at the AFL saying it’s their fault

It’s only in very recent times that players themselves started taking concussion seriously. We’ve all heard stories of players trying to get around concussion protocols, of downplaying symptoms so they can still play, seen them spitting the dummy because they’ve been taken off whilst wearing wobbly boots

There is absolutely a culture within the playing group that celebrates the toughness of players taking a big hit and playing on

There needs to be more, and better, research, into concussion which the AFL should be taking the lead on. But players need to be taking responsibility for their own actions - past, present and future

You don't think that it may be a case of needing players to be protected from themselves? Do you know if many elite sportsmen that won't do everything they can to get back into the game?

Oh absolutely

But it’s a bit like my wife telling me that too many beers might not end well, then me blaming her for not stopping me when it does go pear shaped

At some point the players have to take some responsibility for their own well being and acknowledge that they may have contributed to their own issues

This is not true for all players mind you. Venables, for example, did what was asked of him but was given poor advice/treatment. Don’t think he should be taking any blame for his predicament

Indeed. But I think that players have a tendency to ignore a sore knee or elbow, and in the end it results in a creaky joint when they retire - then they try to apply the same logic to a concussion but they're not fully aware of the possible repercussions.

I can't imagine that a player trying to take themselves out of the game for concussion in the 80s/90s would have been taken overly well by the club

Was happening as recently as a few years ago.

JK told the story he got knocked out early in the semi final vs Carlton in 2011. Came back on and kicked 3 goals but had little memory of the game

There will be a reckoning coming for players when it comes to concussion. There's no doubt impact sports like football has the potential for brain injury, even just from the regular play. The only way to protect people from concussion in games like football, rugby league, gridiron etc is to ban it. If you don't want to ban it, then the players are likely going to have to acknowledge it as an accepted risk. That's not to say leagues don't do everything they can to minimise it, but there will likely be players that didn't get a noticeable concussion that have some consequences in later years.

They're basically enabling his quiet performances by telling him he doesn't have to focus on scoring.
Same thing kinda happened at Philly until they got sick of it.
His steal did apparently lead to a win in one game last week tho.
Actually it only got them to tie the game and go to overtime, then they lost badly in overtime.

Found this interesting that the highest ranked AFLW team gets to host the grand final. Wish it was the same for the AFLM.
I wonder if this will change as the women's game grows and put pressure on for the men's game to be afforded the same....

Love the optimism but the second it becomes a drawcard it'll be locked into the MCG due to 'tradition'

There is no AFLM - it's the AFL.

If the AFLW evolves to be able to fill stadiums for finals, you can bet they will suddenly lock it into its "traditional" home at the MCG so they can start scalping tickets as "corporate packages".

If it stays in the current timeslot the MCG will be being used by cricket.

So it'll be Marvel
