Interchange costs Hawks the game

Would all of those saying its harsh but fair feel the same way if the decsion was determined to be incorrect. There is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that the Hawks had 5 on the bench. So, the umpire makes an assumption, gets it wrong, costs Hawthorn the game - making it very difficult for us to make the 4 and therefore win a grand final. The error if proven, is outrageous and has a massive, disproportionate impact on the club.
Of course it is. But finishing outside the top 4 won't matter as much this year unless you play Fremantle.

I didn't see the incident.. was this the reason they were penalized?

Even so, they shouldn't **** up their interchanges. The rule is fair.

yeah of course the rule is fair, you can't have 19 players on the field. But the punishment is not fair.

Hawthorn did not win the game - not because they weren't good enough at football to win, but because one of their players stepped a metre past a line when the ball was 100 metres away.

There should be a minimum punishment. Garry Lyon suggested a free kick at the next centre bounce.
Of course there needs to be maximum punishment if done purposely for advantage, but in those cases where it's a matter of inches, there should be minimum to no penalty.

Can't believe all the idiots saying 'the players know the rules, it's fair, etc.' Whether the players know the rules is not an indication fo whether it is a good rule. Maybe the rule should be that if a players makes an interchange infringement, they and their team are banned from the AFL competition for the rest of the year. If the AFL told everyone that, it would be fair, because the players would know the rules and it would just be a simple matter of not stepping over the line. The players know the rules, its their fault.

It is pretty clear the infringement occurred, guy posting earlier was sitting behind the interchange and saw it. The AFL have also confirmed that the decision was correct. It would be pretty hard to get it wrong.

I haven't heard that, I do know that the hawks have decided not to take the matter further but will be asking for a please explain ....... Do you have a link.

Laughable that your taking the word of a poster sitting behind the interchange at the game. Two minutes to go, crucial time of the game, anyones game and the spectator is watching the interchange bench :D:D

no one would base there opinion on what a poster on bigfooty says but it carries a little more weight than what a bunch of disgruntled hawthorn supporters are posting. The guy was a collingwood supporter.

From the Afl website

HAWTHORN has conceded it was probably at fault when penalised for an interchange infringement late in Friday's night's draw with St Kilda.

The AFL said on Saturday that it had spoken with its interchange steward, viewed vision of the incident, and was therefore satisfied with the decision.

Who cares bout the interchange free kick??

Fix the friggin umpiring.

At one stage in the last qtr the free for Hawks was at 30 to Saints 19 FFS......and the interpretation for holding the ball???? we won the tackle count by a fair margin and got no reward.

FFS If players take the tackler on - ping them.

Check Buddy's gifts??? - goals from soft 50's and a joke of a soft free for "chopping" against Dawson - Riewoldt got 1 free for the night.....there goes the ump pet theory.

Good game. Hawks at their absolute peak. Saints have more in the tank for mine.......and some of those Riewoldt grabs looked ominous to me.....clearly 1 out Hawks have no one who can go with him..........Gram also had 7 inside fwd 50's so we're getting there..........

Not having someone goal side at that last ball up in the saints forward line cost the hawks the game in my opinion. Hodge started there and for some inexplicable reason ran across to the other side (delaying the ball up). This left no hawthorn players between the ball up and the st kilda goals. Not blaming Hodge but that looked like an extraordinary decision watching on tv.

plus half his goals from a droppedd mark he bearly touched.

Your having a laugh surely ? You play on your favorite ground. You kicked your most accurate score of all time just about. The Hawks missed a few easy shots and you still needed to be saved by an interchange free and a last second goal.

Everything went the Saints way and it was a draw. At the G in finals i dont like your chances at all.

Better tell Nick about the umps - Hes acting like he still is their pet

FWIW the saints seem to be a good way behind last year

Yes thats right mate, just building into September rather than peaking in July like we did last year and the hawks are this year. Clearly the Hawks are playing as good as they can at the moment but the Saints still have another couple of gears.

Our best player (some say the most influential player in the competition) is just finding his feet after a serious injury. Look out in a few weeks time.

Really?

Kosi with the ball in his hands 35m out and a free paid against the runner for interfering with play. How do you interfere with play when the umpire is lining someone up for goal?

Goddard with the ball in his hands with six seconds to go in the first. If he kicks it anywhere other than Rioli's chest, its the end of the quarter.

Hawthorn with the ball on the boundary on the half back flank with six seconds to go in the second. No way you can score from there. Unless there is a 50m penalty followed by a buddy mark which from the tv coverage he seemed to juggle either side of the siren going off. (May have been different on the ground)

Campbell Brown "accidentally" hitting Dal Santo with a swinging clenched fist resulting in our most creative midfielder spending at least 30 minutes on the bench.

Yeah, we were lucky.

Player errors are not things not going your way thats just poor play. Kosi kicked 3 goals ffs that happens as often as christmas.

Are you kidding me? It seems like your good mate Buddy is starting to overtake Riewoldt in that area. He played for a lot of frees last night, and more often than not, received them.

But your excuse was Saints kicking accurately and Hawks kicking poorly. You can't have it both ways.

I wasn't making any excuses, i was simply refuting the claim the the Hawks were at their best while the Saints can play alot better. The Saints certainly cant kick any straighter than last night while the Hawks can. We created almost twice the chances you did. 9 times out of 10 you lose when that happens.

If last night wasn't the Saints near their best what was last week ?

Given that it was Riewoldt's comeback game at home you would of thought the Saints should of had the edge in this game. I'm sure he will get continually better but it doesn't bode well for the rest of the team which apart from Gram has been fit virtually all season. Hawthorn on the other hand had 9 more inside 50's and 8 more scoring shots. Apart from Baker who has got to comeback? Hawthorn still have Hooper to come back and players like Young, Gibson, Burgoyne, Brown, Sewell are continually improving from the their injuries.

Terrible rule and terribly managed. If their is an 'extra' player on the ground because the player leaving the field is a step away from the bench, how can you say that player is in a position to influence the game? It should be looked at on a situational basis. The player that is considered 'on the ground' should be judged on whether he is in a position to influence the game. If he is not, then who gives a f***.

Yes cost Hawthorn the game.
