Every week there's some numpty abusing Rioli on socials, throwing a banana at Eddie Betts, booing Adam Goodes (cause he's just suchhhh a dirty player). There is no cost to doing this. It in no way gets in the way of our prime goal to win a premiership. It's just the club making clear that it stands with a historically marganised group.

To anyone who is strongly against this, without just yelling "woke" as if that's an explanation, please tell me exactly why this is such a bad thing.

This board has been very vocal against adding "And Make the Community Proud" to the end of "We Exist to Win Premierships"

That could either be seen as taking issue with a fundamental part of the ethos of the club being changed or it could be seen as a silly overreaction. A lot of people would passionately argue that you should never change the things that give the club its identity.

I'd say changing the name of the football club is actually a lot more drastic than that example, so it shouldn't be a shock that anyone would be against the idea.

Imagine not seeing the net benefit in this you absolute bell end
Imagine having to call someone names just because I have a different opinion!!
I'd just prefer my club to remain called the Port Adelaide Football Club, Players try as hard as they can and hopefully win a premiership or two. I have no interest in my club getting involved in Social and/or Political issues.
In turn I will support ALL of the players who don our jumpers regardless of their backgrounds.
Sorry for having a different opinion.

Sport is social, if you can't see that then you're truly lost.
The hypocrisy of saying you support all the players but can't get around this for a week is bonkers too

Imagine not being able to recognize the slow destruction of the identity and club that got to the AFL. Does Man City change its name?

All those who claim it's part of our clubs fabric to push boundaries, yes it is but to win, to get an advantage so we can win Premiership. That last bit you've seen eroded, now we push boundaries that have nothing to do with the club moving forward to win more (the main goal of the club, or should be) and in the process turn supporters against each other.

Port fan A - Don't want to change the name
Port fan B - You're a racist

All over socials etc right now and this thread.

Of course it's completely unreasonable to say anyone is a racist for not being on board with this. I 100% agree.

But the Venn diagram of people who are strongly opposed to this and those who are..."uncomfortable" with how this country is changing are two fully overlapping circles.

I see absolutely no way in which this makes it harder for us to win a flag.

It's hard to see how anyone reasonable could be strongly opposed to this. Calling it out as virtue signalling, tokenism, etc, yeah absolutely. But actually having a problem with it beyond that seems odd, it's a really long bow to think it will have any negative impact on anything.

Well the good news is, it still is called the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Because club identity is important. I thought we all understood that from the ongoing prison bar jumper debate.
It's funny how we're willing to just give things away when it suits.
Do you think Melbourne's club identity has tangibly suffered since they started calling themselves Narrm once a year? If so, please provide examples.

It's almost like the people who have a problem with it aren't actually bothered by this because of 'club identity' or 'distractions from winning premierships', and are just using those issues as smokescreens for the real reason they have a problem with it. Almost.

backtozero, I should say that this doesn't necessarily apply to you. I disagree with you on a lot of things (including this) but I think you're a reasonable person and can have a reasonable discussion with you. The likes of raptalia and MikeyG though, flat out bigots and fundamentally bad people, as they've proven over and over again on this board.

If you think our identity is so weak that changing it for a week to recognise Indigenous Australians could be a brutal blow to the fabric of our club from which we may never truly recover:

You're right. Power IS a weak identity and you're right to be concerned about it.

Yartapuulti Pirates has such a nice ring to it.

Meh I can get why people don't want any confusion around the name, especially when there has been so much erosion of our identity in the past 5 years - playing a year without a captain, destroying the "We exist to win premierships" by adding "and community proudery our specialness" shit to it, becoming the least ruthless club in the competition, calling fans white noise... so I think there is a legitimate reason why people may not like this that isn't just the "hating everything woke" angle.

That said, I like it. Its once a year, I think its good for people, and it will almost certainly help sell merch.

Can you think of anyone who is against this who isn't also quite vocally against the woke mind virus ruining our culture?

If you'd ask me to list the people on this board who would be angry at this prior to the announcement i'd have been at something like 90%.

Our identity will be fine.
