I have no stats to back anything up because I couldn't be fagged looking them up, but I have an opinion which says that i agree with those saying Cox is a great player. But having said that Simon Madden was the best I've seen.
Closely followed by Simon Crawshay.

This is why comparing over different eras is useless.

Tap work - well nowadays you have 10 pairs of players under the ruckmen at every stoppage. Cox wins more than his fair share of the taps, but with so many players around the ball and taggers hanging off every half decent player its 100% harder to win a clear knock down to a teammate than it was back in the day.

Back then though, because there was no centre square, the whole 2 bloody teams could have been near the circle when there was a tap-out. Thankfully common sense prevailed and players stayed where they were. Have a look at some of the old footage from pre-1972!

Cox is a very good ruckman, best in the league at the moment. Comparing him to past players is not fair, but Peter Moore could do everything that Cox can do, better.

Guys like Gary Dempsy and Simon Madden weren't quite as mobile but still damn good. Len Thompson was the prototype of the tall athletic running ruckman.

I could go on, but it would be pointless arguing with people who can't remember what life was like prior to broadband enabled home PC's, let alone remember what it was like watching replays on black and white TV.

From 88-93 (the only stats easily available) he averaged 11.9 disposals a game- Cox is cruising along at almost double that this season.

Madden commenced his career in 1974 and finished in 1992, so it's unfair to judge his performance solely when he was post 30.

Fwiw, Madden is the best ruckman I've seen.
