Joel Selwood is a young gun, there is no doubt about that. But, number 6 player in the comp? Surely not. Just think about this, he was voted in ahead of Bartel, Hodge, Pav, Riewoldt, Browndog, Black, Scarlett, Cooney, Deledio (I would argue he had a better year in a lesser team) and Cox.

Selwood bandwagon is driven by media, in particular the Triple M team, which I think has inflated his worth. Potential wise, he definitely can be in the top 3 players as soon as next year, but we are talking about this year.

Thoughts?

i think he is a very good player and only going to get better but i do agree that he is not in the top 6 for players in the comp

the number 6 in the comp thing is subjective like all of these arguments.

i dont think he's overrated at all. but i could care less about top 6 stuff.

great player. gonna be a star!

Yeah I agree with you on most points. He certainly would make a top 50 maybe even a top 25 in the league, but to say he is the in the best six players in the league is a bit much.
Just looking at Geelong IMO, Ablett, Bartel, Scarlett, Ling and Stevie J are better players then him and maybe even Ottens.

I must admit I dont see what others do. But maybe I'm a slow learner. Geelong is such an astoundingly good team I dont really notice Selwood out there.

Not sure if he's over-rated. He's probably not, but he's certainly been given accolades very quickly. The only player to be fawned over so soon in his career recently is Chris Judd. We'll have to wait and see if he's as good as Judd

But over-hyped, no doubt.

To quote Jonathan Brown:

""Joel Selwood is amazing. We (the Lions) have got (his brother) Troy on our list and the other boys (Adam and Scott) are not as well built. But he is a gorilla," he said. "In his second year he is so thick around his hips and his legs. You don't like to keep saying it but he does remind you of a Michael Voss."

Of course Gibbsy will still be better :D

Personally I'm more interested in what his opponents think than what the BigFooty community and media do, but all I can say is that anyone who watches him regularly realises how good he is - cool under pressure, great disposal, hard at it, he's just an absolute natural.

Definitely no where near #6 player in the comp.

Overrated? I would have originally said no, as he's an absolute gun for a second year player.

Having said that, I didn't realise he was rated as highly as 6th best in the comp. In that case, **** yeah he's overrated.

Pav's "value" was demonstrated by the fact that the team played better without him and won games without him

I was surprised to see Selwood at 6, but the AFL players voted, not BigFooty posters. I wouldn't think those guys would pay too much attention to the boofheads on MMM

highly overrated.

in any other side he'd be solid, but not outstanding.

it's okay, this will come to light as his career progresses.

omg! he was voted the 6th most VALUABLE player!! how come people dont understand that it was the most valuable player award not the brownlow

I think his skills and decision making are first class and along with his toughness that's maybe why he stood out among his peers/competitors and gained votes

I saw a replay of the 2006 and 2007 GF's recently. I was surprised to see that while Ben Cousins was gaining a truckload of possession, a lot of those kicks weren't damaging, or were to 50/50 situations that got turned over. His running, ball gathering, and workrate were out of this world but most of them were ineffective

In comparison Joel Selwood can take a 20 possession game and make it really count on the scoreboard. James Hird was the same. Didn't need a lot of possessions but made them count down the ground

I think when you're on the ground it's quality that might stand out in your mind rather than quantity. If someone next to you does something really clever, that's probably what you might recall when you go to vote. I agree he's probably not #6 in the league rankings, but I'm trying to explain why he would might have gathered that many votes from his competitors

Not to mention he has 3 brothers he would have voted for him!

If you are starting this because of his MVP votes then you can blame the players because they voted on it.

A very good player in an extremely talented side is how i see him. The way that geelong play the game they could make even an ordinary player look pretty good. Ask yourself this question would Selwood be classed as good if he didn't have an Ablett, Bartel, Corey etc around him?

Theres just as reasonable chance he could be better without them.

at the aflpa awards, each club nominated 3 players, and all players not nominated could not be voted for. The 3 players from geelong were: gablett, selwood and corey. so the players you mentioned are illeligable to compete.
